Horror Crush: Tawny Moyer

I am so over this damn summer heat. All, I can think of is when it will be fall and most especially about Halloween! So, let's keep this glorious and highly awaited time in mind, by inducting a beauty into Horror Crushes that is connected to that great season. And, that stunner is blonde babe Tawny Moyer!

Tawny Moyer was born on March 30, 1957 in San Diego, California. She began acting in 1978 but only acted in one horror flick (which keeps the trend going from our two previous inductees: Sara Melson and Almanta Suska). Anyway, that movie is Halloween II, one of the most popular and beloved entries (especially by fans) in one the genre's biggest franchises!

Taking place right after the masterful original, this one has unstoppable killer Michael Myers (Dick Warlock) following final girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) to the hospital. He wants to kill her and finish what he started in the last movie. All in his way are soon to permanently go away. Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence), meanwhile, is determined to stop him for good. We also learn that Laurie is Michael's sister, a storyline that would continue and be accepted as canon until the shitty last trilogy threw it all away.

Halloween II has aged wonderfully. It has actually gotten better with the passing of time and viewings. This is especially true in light of that aforementioned wretched trilogy (but hey we did get an inductee into Horror Crushes in the form of Virgina Gardner so there is that). Sure the movie suffers from the limitations of the slasher flick (including some dumb characters) especially within a studio franchise and this time period. Add to that stupid jump scares (though one involving Michael, a pretty brunette, and a butcher knife does work quite well) and a mostly useless Laurie, as faults of the flick. But, it is also really well shot, has some mean spirited and violent kills, an absolute killer climax, and Loomis fucking rules.

Another plus is that the movie has its fair share of hotties in the cast. And, we even get a very memorable topless scene from one of them (Pamela Susan Shoop). But, even if she doesn't get nude, my favorite was always Moyer. I've had a crush on her ever since I first saw this flick, as a little kid on TV. Her blonde hair, blue eyes, and natural good looks immediately caught the attention of my young brain and heart. Her character of nurse Jill isn't given a lot to do, but she remains likable throughout the flick's duration. So much so, that I always feel bad when her character gets killed by Michael via scalpel to her back and gets dramatically lifted as she gasps in pain.

Mickey gives the WORST back scratches!

Moyer's last acting gig was in 2001. and she retired from the movie biz soon after. But, she played a memorable role in one of the best entries in a popular franchise. So, with a solid performance and striking beauty lighting up Halloween II, I happily induct Tawny Moyer into this site's Horror Crushes! Are you fellow fan of hers? Let me know in the comments section below!

Horror Crush: Katherine Heigl

Our latest induction into Horror Crushes is also a perfect pick for Valentine's Day: the gorgeous Katherine Heigl!

Katherine Heigl was born in Washington DC on November 28, 1978 and was the youngest of four children, Her father is Irish-German (with a Swiss German ancestry), while her mom is of German descent. She started her career modeling and began acting in 1992's That Night. She would eventually become the queen of the rom-com and be well known for the TV series Grey's Anatomy. But, I can honestly I have never seen any of those and that's obliviously not what got her this honor.

She first caught my eye when as a teen I saw her in ads and doing promotion for My Father the Hero (1994). I thought was a total babe, which got further solidified when she appeared as Steven Segal's niece in the entertaining sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995). But, it's 1998's Bride of Chucky that remains my favorite movie of hers.

My favorite of the Chucky sequels, has our favorite murderous doll getting resurrected by his sexy and voluptuous girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly). Heigl plays Jade a cutie who along with her boyfriend become unwittingly involved when they are taken as hostages by the killer doll couple.

With stylish directing by Ronny Yu, Bride is an absolute blast to watch. It's funny, gory, and thanks to Tilly, in human form anyways, a sexy movie. Heigl is fine in her role, being likable even if slightly bland. She looks absolutely gorgeous and having loved her in that aforementioned Segal movie, I was super happy to see her in a horror movie! I As much, as I love Tilly, who obviously has the more significant role and character, it's Heigl I crushed on the most.

Her next horror flick was 2001's Scream inspired Valentine. In it, a group of hot, female friends get offed by a whack-job in a Cupid/ Cherub mask. You see, back in junior high they rejected and made fun of a nerdy kid. Now, he wants revenge and decides to off them when they are college aged.

Like any post Scream movie Valentine is filled with impossibly beautiful people. In the lovely ladies department, aside, from Heigl we also get Marley Shelton, Denise Richards, Jessica Cauffiel, Jessica Capshaw, and a couple of other beauties. Also, like those movies the gore is pretty low. Though the MPAA did excise some splatter for an R-rating, cause of course they did. And, also of course, there is no nudity, sadly. Still, the cast is good, the women hot, and director Jamie Blanks does add some style making for a good looking movie. It's fun even if it is also dumb as fucking shit, especially when it reaches its ending.

Heigl plays Shelley Fisher, the first of the friends who gets whacked. She is a medical student, who goes on a date with some douchebag. Admit ably one of the things I like about the movie is that every guy the girls meet is awful. It adds to the fun. Anywho, this is my favorite role of hers, as she is spunky and funny, on top of looking great in a tank-top. And, in a movie filled with babes, she was, once again my favorite lady. Sadly, she doesn't seem to agree, as Heigl has shit on the film for its supposedly graphic violence and treatment of women. Then again, she doesn't seem to like anything she's done in her past, so whatever.

Now, I gotta admit that I thought this was her final role in horror. But, in doing research for this post I found out that I was wrong! She appeared in the 2002 episode "Cradle of  Darkness" from The Twilight Zone. Apparently this one has to do with killing baby Hitler, which sounds awesome!

Then, she appeared in a 2003 Edgar Allan Poe inspired flick called Descendant.

And, also that year, she appeared in a made for TV horror flick (which honestly is usually a dreaded combination of words, especially post 70s) called Evil Never Dies. If any of you have seen any of these three, let me know how they are in the comments section below.

Like I said, she is certainly more known for movies and TV shows I have zero fucking interest of watching. And, as such I had lost interest in her. Until, I found out about her love of dogs, through her social media. And, so with it being Valentine's Day today and her past horror roles, I am honored (even she might not be, though let's be honest she'll never read this) to induct Katherine Heigl into Horror Crushes!

I would also like to wish you all a very Happy Valentine's Day!

Of A Nightmare of a Toolbox Killer, Maniac, New York Ripper and Not Going in Houses or Answering Phones: The Era of the Nasty Slasher

Back in the 80's slasher movies got a bad rap from critics and those who liked who take a shit on the genre. But, for all the Jason, Michael, Freddy, and their knockoffs most of those films, where fairly dumb and even innocuous. Many, thanks to the MPAA were butchered or not truly interested in super graphic violence. In fact, as the decade went on, they got sillier and less mean spirited. But, early on there was a rash of very nasty and controversial films that pushed the genre into sleazy and possibly misogynistic territory. In fact, one could say that batch of movies that I am gonna talk about today are guilty of a lot of things empty headed critics said the more popular and mainstream stalk and slash flicks were guilty. That would be if it weren't for the fact that most, if not all, of these movies mentioned here were legitimately controversial, in their own right.
(Don't Answer the Phone)

The first of the movies to come out was The Toolbox Murders (1978). This infamous slasher movie is usually bought up by those looking to mention the sleaziest in the genre. The movie has some dude in a ski mask killing beautiful and frequently nude chicks using things that you would find, in well, a toolbox. Our sicko is punishing these girls, cause they are sinners, IE lesbian lovers, masturbating, etc. He also kidnaps pretty teen Laurie (Pamlyn Ferdin), who he keeps cause she is a "good girl" (below) and reminds him of his murdered daughter.

The aforementioned masturbating lady is played by the beautiful Kelly Nichols (below), who at the time was a porn star. Her scene is probably the nastiest and most infamous, getting taken out by a nailgun to the head. The movie is often blamed for misogyny, but I think it's a good little, early slasher. Stephen King, himself, is quite the fan of the movie. And, honestly, I get why. The acting is actually pretty decent, with Cameron Mitchell, in particular chewing up the scenery. The film is slow but also relentlessly sleazy. It's grown on me over time and viewings, and these days I quite like it. Years later, in 2004, horror master Tobe Hooper directed a "remake" of it. The movie purposely moved away from the inherit nastiness of the original, by making sure that not every victim was woman. And, that they weren't inherently sexualized. It also adds a supernatural element to the killer. It's a good movie, but I do prefer the original, in part cause of its dirtier feel.

In, 1979 we got Don't Go in the House which had some slightly better reviews. It is also attempts to make us sympathize, at least partly with the whack-o, Donald Kohler (Dan Grimaldi). Donald used to be abused and burned by his mom, who he keeps the corpse of Psycho-style! Anywho, he grows up with a thing for fire. He eventually brings pretty girls home and burns them alive with a flame thrower in a metal room (that he constructs, himself). Clearly, this is a heartwarming movie, well something warming, anyway.

The movie has a depressing and disturbing feel. It features some incredible acting from Grimaldi, and he does much to elevate the movie. The idea of child abuse making him into the monster he becomes, adds depth to the film. And, that combined with the tone and very horrific blowtorch action will get under your skin. Over in Britain, it was nasty enough to be on the actual Video Nasties list.

William Lustig's Maniac (1980) might be most controversial of this batch (which is saying A LOT!). Here we have another sick-o (Joe Spinell giving some great acting) with a mommy problem/ abuse issue. Like, the aforementioned DGITH, this movie is told through the killer's point of view, who we follow throughout the movie. But, this film is even more graphic than that one. Tom Savini's incredible and realistic make-up FX really help to push the movie, and its' limits. The ultra-graphic scalpings, stabbings, bloody climax, and a spectacular head explosion (which happens to Savini, himself), helped make sure the movie would never get an R-rating. The seemingly misogynistic tone angered and repelled many, who were quick to condemn the gory slasher. Shit, even the poster (left) pissed some off who claimed the killer has a boner. You look at the poster and decide for yourself.

Even, horror critics seemed to turn on the film. Gorehound and beloved legend Chas. Balun gave the film a low rating of one and half stars out of four in his classic book The Gore Score. He mentioned how the film was a "reprehensible snuff film made by former pornographers" and "a low point in a long, long season of low points". This coming from the man who sang or would sing the praises of Cannibal Holocaust (a great film regardless of what thinks of its content) and Nekromantik. My point isn't to come down on Balun, he was my hero. But, more to show just hated the movie was at some point. Savini himself, tried to distance himself from the movie and disavow it.

But, controversy breeds cash and the film was a huge hit. Over time. the seemingly younger audience that grew up, and the movie was reevaluated as a true classic. I would say this really began around the time that Elite Entertainment put out, its then ground breaking laserdisc release of it. Today, Maniac is rightfully seen as one of the best movies of its type. It's remake is great, so much better than I ever imagined it to be. While, mean and able to get under the skin, it isn't as sleazy feeling as the original, which, again, I do prefer.

Releases a month later in February of that year, Don't Answer the Phone, is the least gory of the batch. It adds an interesting cop procedural mix into the sleaze bracket, making it stand out from the other flicks. Two cops are trying to catch a brutal killer that rapes and strangles beautiful, young women. The tone, whenever the killer is onscreen, switches to disturbing. Nicholas Worth gives an amazing performance as the religious and disturbed Vietnam vet and killer. The fact that he rapes them on top of killing them adds a whole different level of uncomfortable content to the proceedings.

From 1981, we have Nightmare (AKA Nightmares of a Damaged Brain), which is also easily the weakest in the batch. Like Maniac and Don't Go in the House it takes place in New York City. It really captures the dirty feel of the city, especially when it comes to the red-light district. A dude who has been undergoing a mental treatment after having mutilated a family. Once he is out and about he goes from NYC to Florida. He racks up a bloody body count of, of course, beautiful women. The movie was advertised to have Savini's work, which ended up being not entirely true. Regardless, the gore is uber graphic, bloody, and down right nasty. Thrown in is lots of sexual content, including a trip to see a peep shows in Times Square. Yet, despite the dirty feel, babes, and splatter, it is a fucking goddamn bore and has no character development. The climax and twist at the end do help to wake you up.

The last of these, Lucio Fulci's The New York Ripper, is the most different. Then again, it is an Italian and a giallo, as opposed to an American slasher/ serial killer flick. The movie has a detective (Jack Hedley) trying to find and stop a serial killer who is brutally killing beautiful, young women in New York City. The killer quacks like a duck (yes, you read that right), on the phone and to his victims. The movie's ending explains why he does this, but it doesn't stop from feeling silly whenever you hear him do that (even when knowing the reason and in retrospect).

However, the overall brutality of the movie stops it from ever feeling funny. Women are frequently portrayed in sexual manners, though not all are. Regardless, all the women are gorgeous, but this being an Italian flick, is par for the course. Anyway, the deaths are graphic and exceptionally mean spirited. Broken bottles get shoved between a sex show performer's legs, a hooker who fucks our hero has her tit, eye, and more slashed by a razor (in what is probably the movie's nastiest moment), and other not very nice things happen. The flick is actually at odds with itself, because one does not know how to react to the gore and duck quacking combined. It's violence has made it unquestionably Fulic's most controversial film, with it being used as a prime example of his supposed misogyny.

Yet, behind all the nastiness and sillier moments, there is a solid and good movie hiding here. One with some of Fulci's most suspenseful moments, including a nail-biting chase of the beautiful, young blonde Faye (Almanta Keller) (below) through the subway, alley, and into the movie theater. There is a gorgeous three disc Blu-ray release by Blue Underground that makes the flick look better than it ever has.

So, then the ultimate question is are these movies truly misogynistic? It is a little hard to answer. On the one hand the violence against women, and the fact that they are often presented in a sexual manner, would definitely make one come to this conclusion. Which is to say from a simple look they  are. But, there is one thing that holds me from fully answering yes to this question. None of the killers are glamorized. Even in something like Don't Go in the House, where we might feel somewhat bad for the killer, it is clear that they are disturbed individuals. The movies go a long way in not making us cheer for the killer or think they are fun or cool, like Jason or Michael might come off as.
(Don't Go in the House)

As a matter of fact, Ripper was the end of this trend. Slashers became more and more fantastical, as Michael, Jason, Freddy, Chucky, and all their rip-offs would dominate from here on in. Later on, there were serial killer horror movies like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Rampage, The Silence of the Lambs, and Seven, but these movies are very different from the ones we just talked about, and, honestly, from each other.

These "nasty" slashers have a feeling of the real world, for the most part, which further adds to the power of these movies. And, keeps them from being a "fun time" to be had, even if some of them have legitimately enjoyable moments most of which don't come from the actual killing scenes. With the exception of the aforementioned Savini exploding head from Maniac which is fucking awesome! And speaking of Maniac, I did love it from my first viewing, even if I thought it was possibly guilty of misogyny. But, over time I have come to the conclusion that this is the easy way to see these movies. There is more to them. And, all, with the exception of Nightmare, are solid, if not excellent horror, that deserve to be seen and even studied by those who like their horror to be rough and ready.
(The Toolbox Murders)

I would love to hear your thoughts on these movies. Are these slasher movies misogynistic in your eyes? Or is there more to them? Do you wish that more of these flicks had been made instead of the more fantastic slashers that followed them? Let me know in the comments section below.

Friday the 13th: Ranked from Worst to Best

On Monday the 13th, Shout Factory, the horror/ cult division of Shout Factory (of course!), announced pre-orders, for what promises to be a killer Friday the 13th box set. I debated back and forth getting it, but in the end I caved in. And, I feel I made the right choice. Anyway, with that in mind, I figured it would be fun and the right time, to rank the entire series, something I last did with King Kong. So, here we go with the biggest (thus far) slasher series in horror, from the very worst entry all the way to the best one!

ALL REVIEWS OUT 4 HOCKEY MASKS

12. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)- Man, is this movie ever a disappointing piece of shit. Even if you discount the fact that it barely takes place in Manhattan (most of which is actually Canada!), and instead is in a fucking boat, you still have other issues. It is painfully stupid and filled with character you could give a flying fuck about. It doesn't even have any real gore to speak of, being terribly weak in terms of bloodletting. It also has a shitty ending. I will say this about it though, the actual Manhattan scenes are cool, the theme song is great, the girls are HOT, especially Sharlene (Tamara) Martin and Kelly (Eva) Hu, the doggie is cute, and Kane Hodder is always a great Jason. This is about all the praise this turd will get from me though.
1 1/2 HOCKEY MASKS

11. Friday the 13th (2009)- The first time I saw this remake, I enjoyed it. But, each viewing since then has gotten worse than the last. One of the problems is the flat directing. While the film looks nice there is little to no suspense. Scenes drag out longer than they need to be. This really becomes clear in the Jason and his underground lair moments. Also, why the fuck does he even have one in the first fucking place? While, violent, the movie isn't that gory, but there are still some inspired moments. That being said, the acting is solid (including Supernatural's Jared Padalecki) and the female cast is hotter than hell itself! Included in this is Juliana Guilll's awesome topless scene, which ranks among the best skin moments in the entire franchise. Also, Derek Mears is one of the best Jasons ever!
2 HOCKEY MASKS

10. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)- Admit ably I used to like this one more when I was in college. But, I still think it's better than what some say it is. It has some major problems, don't get me wrong. The movie heavily rips off of the vastly superior sci-fi/ horror/ action flick The Hidden, and the lack of seeing Jason commit the kills is awful. But, it has what might well be the finest gore in the entire franchise, including the spectacular scene where a smoking hot brunette is riding her boyfriend, gets impaled, then split open. And, speaking of girls this one has some really hot ones! Plus, the ending is really cool.  And, Hodder, even in limited bits, is always awesome.
2.5 HOCKEY MASKS

9. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)- Here is another one that I liked a more when I was younger, in this case an actual kid. You see it's one of the first R-rated horror movies, I ever caught outside of their TV edited versions. But, admit ably it is really fucking stupid. The ending, in particular, is fucking ridiculous. And, it suffers A LOT from the butchering hands of the MPAA, who seriously hamper every single kill. In spite of this, the movie is fun. The idea of telekinetic teen Tina (say that 5 times fast!), who is played by the gorgeous Lar Park Lincoln, battling Jason makes for a cool time. Tina also happens to be one of my favorite final girls in the series. And, she and bitchy Melissa (Susan Jennifer Sullivan) are two of my biggest F13 crushes. Though, there are quite a bit of other hotties in this one. Plus, Kane Hodder makes his awesome debut as Jason, in what is THE character's best look, EVER!
2.5 HOCKEY MASKS

8. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)- Again, this movie is for accounts and purposes stupid as fuck. It is actually pretty hilarious in its stupidity. But, it also has a nice mean spirited side that makes for some nasty albeit quick kills. The girls are hot as ever, including, but not limited to, Debi Sue Voorhees (and her incredible boobs) and Melanie Kinnaman (who is THE hottest of all the F13 final girls, in my humble opinion). I also enjoy the Tommy Jarvis story-line, and unlike those that love to bitch and moan, like the idea of a fake Jason.
2.5 HOCKEY MASKS

5. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)- This one sometimes gets a bit overrated by fans hung up on Jason finally doing the killings. And, while, sack-head Jason is easily his creepiest look, the movie, itself, is strictly by the numbers and generic. The gore is horribly chopped up by the MPAA, making the kills lack any of the real punch that they may have had. Still, the girls are super hot, especially Lauren-Marie Taylor (probably in my top F13th crushes) and Kristen Baker (that ass in THOSE shorts!). The lovely Amy Steel is one of the best final girls, anywhere. And, finally the climax is pretty exciting and well done.
3 HOCKEY MASKS

6. Jason X (2001)- Someone is bound to bitch about this one being so high, but I think it is a blast. It's dumb for sure, I mean it's Jason in fucking space for crissakes! But, there in lies the good times. The girls are freaking insanely hot. Uber-Jason is awesome. And, speaking of Jason, Hodder is always a pleasure to see (this is his best F13 flick, me thinks). I LOVE the David Cronenberg cameo! Jason battling sexy android Kay-Em is one of my favorite things in the series. And, the frozen face smash of the gorgeous Kristi Angus is one of the coolest kills ever in the series.
3 HOCKEY MASKS

5. Friday the 13th Part 3: 3D (1982)- This movie is kind of a drag at first. And, the character of Shelly is one of the most insufferable nerds ever in a slasher. But, it does deliver the goods in other ways. First off, I think it works best in 3D (even if its in a crappy 3D version). Secondly, the girls, all brunettes might I add, are HOT! Some of the kills are cool, especially the dude who gets chopped through the crotch while walking on his hands. But, its the KILLER climax (one of the series absolute best) that really gains the movie it's fifth place in my book.
3 HOCKEY MASKS

4. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)- Of course, it is NOT the final chapter, though, it would've been quite fine if it had been. The pacing is well done here, and Tommy makes for a relatable kid (likes monsters and seeing girls naked, that's little me!). Some of THE hottest girls in the entire series are here, including TWINS! This one has the best gore (thank you, Tom Savini!) in the whole Paramount years, including the best and bloodiest death by Jason (THAT slide down a machete!). The climax kicks ass and is also highlighted by Kimberly Beck in a miniskirt.
3 HOCKEY MASKS

3. Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)- Over on my list of The 25 Most Underrated/ Overlooked Sequels, I discussed just why this one is so good. If you want to read my thoughts go here. Suffice to say this, it has flaws, no doubt about it. But, it is also a lot of fun, nice looking, gory, has cool music, and hot girls. And, of course, we get to see Freddy and Jason battle!
3.5 HOCKEY MASKS

2. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)- Look there is no doubt in my mind that this is the best of all the F13 sequels. It is also one of the best slasher flicks of the second half of the 80s. I share more of my thoughts of why it is so good in here in my list of The 30 Best Horror Movie Sequels Ever.
3.5 HOCKEY MASKS

1. Friday the 13th (1980)-  To me, this is the only choice that can top this list. None of the sequels, even the best ones, come close to this one, as it is one of the greatest slashers ever and best horror films of the 80s. Their is a lot of rehashing in the following movies, but while this borrows from Halloween, it does it well. The movie, yes is gory (incredible work from Tom Savini!), but there is an emphasis on suspense, something lacking from all the other films here. This makes the movie actually scary, something, that again none of the other movies can claim to be (unless you are like five years old). The climax is absolutely smashing, violent, and intense and leads to one of the greatest endings in the entire horror genre. An influential, important, and excellent classic, that shall forever remain one of my personal favorites.
4 HOCKEY MASKS

How would you rank the franchise? Did you pre-order the Scream Factory box-set? Why or why not? Also, what other horror franchises would you like to see me rank? Let me know in the comments section below. And, don't be surprised if you see more Friday the 13th posts in the days, weeks, and months to come!
