Horror Crush: Almanta Suska

It's been quite a while since we've inducted someone from Euro-horror into this site's Horror Crush section. But, we're about to correct as we do just that with the gorgeous Almanta Suska!

There is very little to no info on Suska online, other than Google also has under the name Almanta Keller. And, according to her IMDb, she has a total of nine acting credits. But, only one of them is a horror movie. Ahh, but what a movie it is! As it's Lucio Fulci's The New York Ripper!

The New York Ripper deals with police Lieutenant Fred Williamson (Jack Hedley) who is after a sadistic killer who likes to slice up beautiful women with various sharp instruments. Oh and he quacks like a duck.

Having a gritty and sleazy feel and adding the very graphic violence inflicted upon women, earned it much controversy. In someways, it might be the most infamous of Fulci's movies. It was even labeled as being misogynistic by some.

And, yes it is a nasty and brutal mix of sex, slasher, and giallo. But, is also a damn good movie. The odd choice of the quacking killer brings it down a notch or two. So while it ain't S or A tier Fulci, it's damn fucking good and probably in his top five or six best works.

Suska plays Fay, a woman who survives an attack from the razor blade wielding killer. She's a witness now, so the killer definitely wants her dead. Suska is good in her role making for a likable girl. She's also incredibly beautiful, with one of the prettiest faces you're likely to see anywhere. Kind of a shame she didn't do more horror, and honestly more acting in general, cause the camera really likes her. And, she does a good job with what she's given. Honestly, I could totally have seen her do way more Euro-horror flicks and have done great in them.

And, that's it as far as the genre goes. Suska left the movie industry by the 90s. But, her beauty (those gorgeous eyes and long, blonde hair!) and likable performance in one of the master's most infamous movies, more than qualify her for induction into Horror Crushes!t v

Horror Crush: Sara Melson

It's time for another lovely and talented lady to get induced into the Horror Crush section. Today that honor is going to a multi-talented lady. She's an actress, signer, song writer, and ex-professional ballerina. It's Sara Melson

Melson has truthfully only one horror movie role to her credit. But, oh what a memorable one it is!

That one movie is Dr. Giggles (1992). It's a horror comedy about a whacked out of his mind doctor (Larry Drake), who returns to rack up a new body count. He does this all while laughing a lot (hence his name) and delivering medical puns and one-liners. Kind of like if Freddy had gone to medical school, instead of working in a boiler room (and, as a result, only made medical jokes).

The movie was suppose to be the start of a franchise, as Universal even worked with Dark Horse Comics on it. But, it bombed at the box office and got shit reviews. Truth be told, when I first saw it, I hated it. I was well over and had had my fucking fill of slasher movies and wanna-be Freddies. But, it recently got played on The Last Drive-In, and I found myself enjoying it a lot more. I mean it's still dumb as shit and has characters you won't give a flying fuck about. But, it is also a turn off the brain and just enjoy it kind of movie. Also also, Drake is fucking awesome in the title role and truly elevates this movie's quality. He is THE main reason to watch it. Though, Charmed fans should take note as the final girl is played by the lovely Holly Marie-Combs.

Still, two things did forever live rent free in my head, after that first viewing, though. Yes, even with my initial dislike of it. The first is an amazing "birth" scene, where-in little kid Giggles cuts his way out of his dead mom's corpse with a fucking scalpel! It's the splatter highlight of the entire movie. And, the other gets us back to Sara Melson. She gives oral love to a saxophone in a sexy moment that made teen me, er umm, let's just say feel very happy.

Melson plays the bitchy and slutty character of Coreen. She looks gorgeous (those beautiful eyes of hers!) but really isn't giving much to do other than be hot and mean. Her death is rather silly, too, involving a giant band-aid. But, again the saxophone is enough to make her a memorable crush. And, is proof that sometimes you don't even need a huge role or to get nude (though, I think we can all agree that we would not have minded it all, if she had, in fact, done that) to be unforgettable in a horror movie (or any type of movie, truth be told).

And, so with this memorable turn I give Sara Melson the honor of being inducted into this site's Horror Crushes!

Five Points Festival 2024

On the weekend of June 8 & 9, 2024, the annual Five Points Festival once again took place at ZeroSpace in Brooklyn, NY. Dedicated to designer toys, indie comics, beer, tats, and more, it's always a good time and a feast for the eyes. I, of course was there to bring you all the sites. Here are some of my favorite things that I saw on that Saturday:

I love the emphasis on horror on the merch sold at this booth.

HeartBat Studio has such cool merch! I especially love her pink and purple take on classic Toho monsters.

Once again, Super7 returned making them one of the only, if not the only, major toy company with a booth at Five Points. And, as always they have some of the coolest product anywhere!

I really loved the socks that Pals had on display at her booth. It's awesome that their socks come with designs that while not matching still go together as a pair.. The product is cute, fun, and colorful. And, I even bought a pair! You can see it towards the end of this post.

This Children of the Corn doll is from Psychedelic Safari.

I can't go Five Points and not enjoy a nice refreshing craft beer. So, I did, and it tasted great! To me, this is always one of the highlights at this festival/ con. I also love that the seating area looks like an old NYC subway car.

Before I headed home I took a look outside to see the painting contest, which was right next to the food trucks and beer garden. People were gathered to eat, drink, and just have a fun time outside.

Finally here are the two things that I bought myself on this day.  It was a Godzilla Series 2 mystery box, which ended up containing a 1974 Godzilla figure (all the Kaijus are in black and white, by the way. in this series) and from Pal, the Dog and Cat socks (cause I am a dog person, of course!).

I had a great time attending and covering this event. Did any of you go? If so what did you like the most there? Or are you planning on going next year? Let me know in the comments section below.
