Horror Crush: Tawny Moyer

I am so over this damn summer heat. All, I can think of is when it will be fall and most especially about Halloween! So, let's keep this glorious and highly awaited time in mind, by inducting a beauty into Horror Crushes that is connected to that great season. And, that stunner is blonde babe Tawny Moyer!

Tawny Moyer was born on March 30, 1957 in San Diego, California. She began acting in 1978 but only acted in one horror flick (which keeps the trend going from our two previous inductees: Sara Melson and Almanta Suska). Anyway, that movie is Halloween II, one of the most popular and beloved entries (especially by fans) in one the genre's biggest franchises!

Taking place right after the masterful original, this one has unstoppable killer Michael Myers (Dick Warlock) following final girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) to the hospital. He wants to kill her and finish what he started in the last movie. All in his way are soon to permanently go away. Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence), meanwhile, is determined to stop him for good. We also learn that Laurie is Michael's sister, a storyline that would continue and be accepted as canon until the shitty last trilogy threw it all away.

Halloween II has aged wonderfully. It has actually gotten better with the passing of time and viewings. This is especially true in light of that aforementioned wretched trilogy (but hey we did get an inductee into Horror Crushes in the form of Virgina Gardner so there is that). Sure the movie suffers from the limitations of the slasher flick (including some dumb characters) especially within a studio franchise and this time period. Add to that stupid jump scares (though one involving Michael, a pretty brunette, and a butcher knife does work quite well) and a mostly useless Laurie, as faults of the flick. But, it is also really well shot, has some mean spirited and violent kills, an absolute killer climax, and Loomis fucking rules.

Another plus is that the movie has its fair share of hotties in the cast. And, we even get a very memorable topless scene from one of them (Pamela Susan Shoop). But, even if she doesn't get nude, my favorite was always Moyer. I've had a crush on her ever since I first saw this flick, as a little kid on TV. Her blonde hair, blue eyes, and natural good looks immediately caught the attention of my young brain and heart. Her character of nurse Jill isn't given a lot to do, but she remains likable throughout the flick's duration. So much so, that I always feel bad when her character gets killed by Michael via scalpel to her back and gets dramatically lifted as she gasps in pain.

Mickey gives the WORST back scratches!

Moyer's last acting gig was in 2001. and she retired from the movie biz soon after. But, she played a memorable role in one of the best entries in a popular franchise. So, with a solid performance and striking beauty lighting up Halloween II, I happily induct Tawny Moyer into this site's Horror Crushes! Are you fellow fan of hers? Let me know in the comments section below!

Pictures come courtesy of Shudder

US programming highlights for April 2019 on horror streaming service, Shudder:

From Shudder's about "Lizzie" about:

Academy Award (R) nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry, "Big Love") stars as Lizzie Borden, the notorious woman at the heart of one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. After a lifetime of loneliness, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit in housemaid Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart) and their secret intimacy sparks an unthinkable act. Director Craig William Macneill (The Boy (2015), "Channel Zero: Candle Cove") explores the days leading up to the savage crimes in a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams. Coming to Shudder April 11.

From Shudder about "Monster Party":

Three thieves break into a party secretly hosted by a group of recovering serial killers and their simple heist turns into a battle for survival. Coming to Shudder April 25.

The new weekly series of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, which actually starts this Friday night, will be airing! I am counting down the minutes to spending time with Joe Bob Briggs and the lovely "Darcy the Mail Girl" as they present two movies every week!

There will also be a special "half way to Halloween" collection with the first five entries in the Halloween franchise, including my third favorite entry, 4 and perennial fan favorite 3!

Also of note, is that on April 8, we will have the Shudder premiere of The Haunted (1991) a made for TV movie based on a case from Ed and Lorriane Warren (whose paranormal cases inspired The Conjuring movies). Sally Kirkland received a Gloden Globe nomination for her performance in this horror flick. Apparently, it has never been released on DVD or Blu-ray in the US. I actually think that I may have seen this one, but even if I did I do not remember anything about it.

Horror Crush: Virginia Gardner

I finally saw the new Halloween movie two days ago, having been sick in bed before that. And, with it being the season, I figured it was the perfect time to induct a beauty from that movie into Horror Crushes. So let us  add the gorgeous Virginia Gardner!
Born Virginia Elizabeth Gardner in Sacramento, California on April 18, 1995, the lovely Miss. Gardner has appeared in various TV shows and movies since 2011. And, she is just recently beginning to rack up a couple of horror roles.
Her first genre role came in 2016's Tell Me How I Die.  I have never seen or even heard about this one before, today. It deals with college students who take part in a clinical drug test. But, the side effect is that they can see the way that they will die. Gardner plays the lead role. The trailer to this actually looks good and the idea is pretty interesting. Any of you seen this? If so, what are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments section below!

She wouldn't return to the horror genre till two years later, with this year's Halloween. This sequel ignores every sequel in the series and retcons the whole Laurie Strode and Michael Myers are brother and sister. They aren't, but Laurie traumatized is lying in waiting for him, as he has escaped. Anyway, back to the reasoning. Devoid of the eariler famiy ties, we know now that his only reason is that he is simply evil, scary, and brutal. The movie keeps him in mystery and menace,
The film is well acted, especially by Jamie Lee Curtis in what is the best incarnation of Laurie, since the first one (if not ever). I love the take on PTSD, and she is a fucking badass. The climax is probably one of the film's better parts. While the movie, itself, isn't great and has its issues, it is cleaning up at the box office.
Gardner plays Vicky, best friend to Allyson (the lovely Andi Matichak) Laurie's granddaughter. Vicky is a babysitter, who, of course, wants to tonsil hockey her boyfriend. I would say you can guess the rest, but the above image, already a favorite among fans, says everything. This being a slasher, I feel it important to let you know that she does not get nude in the movie.
Regardless, she looks gorgeous throughout, and plays a very likable character. That in, of itself, is rare for stalk and slash movies. Gardner is clearly a talented actress. She has a natural charisma about her that shines in this role. This is destined to keep her a fan favorite with a great future ahead of her.
Her next horror flick Monster Party comes to VOD and Digital HD on Nov. 2, 2018. It reportedly tells the tale of three thieves who pose as waiters at a Malibu mansion dinner party where the dinner guests ain't that innocent. Now they gotta get out of the house without getting killed. Gardner plays one of the aforementioned trio and based on the trailer below, solely, it looks really fucking good!

Virgina Gardner is the all American, beautiful, blonde girl. With her blue eyes and naturally lovely face she has the looks to break many a movie-lovers heart. Especially horror fans, as she is destined to make a name for herself, especially after her encounter with Michael Myers. I would love for her to star in more genre movies, but based on her performance in Halloween and these movies (which I most definitely plan to see), I officially make her one of this site's Horror Crushes!

Horror Crush: Scout Taylor-Compton

Today, I will induct one of the most active and very best of the modern scream queens into my site's Horror Crush section. The gorgeous and highly talented young lady I am referring to is the awesome Scout Taylor-Compton!
Compton was born on February 21, 1989 in Long Beach, California. She is half Mexican American, by way of her mom's side. She was always drawn to horror and the dark, having grown up on the genre and visiting her dad who worked at a mortuary. In fact, her ex-boyfriend Andy Biersack, from the hard rock act Black Veil Brides, wrote a song about her called "The Mortician's Daughter".
She began acting in 1989, doing various TV shows, movies, and commercials. In 2006, she appeared in her first horror movie. Wicked Little Things. I've never seen this one, but have any of you seen it, and if so, any thoughts on it?
A year later, in 2007, she gained the role of Laurie Strode (originally played by the legendary Jamie Lee-Curtis) in Rob Zombie's remake of John Carpenter's seminal classic Halloween. I simply adore this movie, and it is, in fact, my second favorite entry in the entire franchise (obiviously Carpenter's film is my favorite in the series).
Now, I realize that it is a movie that splits its audience between love and hate it. But, for the very reason that many seem to hate it, IE the humanizing Michael Myers, is one of the reasons I love it. I think it adds something new and fresh to series of movies that had long been driven into the ground (especially after the godawful Halloween: Resurrection). Those who bitch and moan should realize that this more "human" Michael is its own universe and continuity separate from the main series (which has a bunch of different continuities to begin with!). It has a dark and violently mean-spirited edge to which helps to make a great slasher. As a matter of fact, I believe it to be one of the best remakes ever and one of the finest slasher movies of the 21st century. And, say what you will the fact remains that it is the highest grossing entry in the franchise.
Compton is a great choice to play Strode as she perfectly captures the girl next door. Or as I always say, the girl I wish lived next door to me! In fact, and this is the pure truth, I was a fan of hers as soon as this movie was over! She has two lovely ladies acting with her, as her friends, in the form of Danielle Harris (who was played the original's Laurie daughter, Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4 & 5) as Annie and Kristina Klebe as Lynda. Compton is a solid final girl and really helps to turn up the tensions in the violent climax, as she tries to deal with all the slaughter around her and escape her brother Michael Myers (who she has no clue is her bro). She is particularly great in the bloody, shrieking, and unnerving ending.
She appeared in another horror remake in the form of April Fool's Day which came out on DVD in 2008. I never saw it, and to be honest, had very little interest to ever see it. I am not a big fan of the original (I hate the ending with a passion), and I didn't even know Compton was in it, till now. Maybe I would have seen it had I known. Do you guys who have seen think I should bother?
A year later she made a cameo in the horror flick Life Blood, which again, I haven't seen. She returned to her best known role, that of Laurie Strode, in Rob Zombie's sequel Halloween II. In it, Strode is living in Annie's (s also returning Danielle Harris) home with her and her dad, Sheriff Brackett (Brad Dourif. who returns as well). Michael survives getting his brains blown out from the last film and heads off to Haddonfield for what he feels will be a family reunion with his sis, stabbing everyone in his way. Laurie is traumatized from the last flick and has become kind of a bratty bitch.
While, I loved the preceding movie, this one, er not so much. I thought it was meh, while first seeing in the movies, and kinda disliked it more the more I thought of it. I would eventually find out that although uneven, it grows more and more on me over time and viewings. It is, at least nicely shot and the violence feels like the most brutal in the franchise. The acting is also quite good, including Compton. While, she is not as likable as she was in the last film, she is given more to work with. She also looks great, especially in her maid costume!
When compared to Halloween: Resurrection it is a masterpiece. I have watched Halloween: Resurrection once and despite owning the Blu-ray box set, I NEVER watched the disc and probably never will!
Compton appeared in a bunch of other horror movies from there (aside from working in other genres, including appearing in the excellent The Runaways). I haven't seen them but they include: 247°F, Flight 7500 (the pic below, in which she looks GORGEOUS!), and Return to Sender.
One horror movie that she is that I did see is 2017's Ghost House. I caught it very recently on Netlix (which it is still streaming on), and I actually enjoyed it. In it, she plays part of a couple that go to Thailand and unknowingly get a ghost curse passed down on her. It breaks no new ground and rips-off of movies like The Ring and The Grudge. But, it is an easy time killer as it keeps you entertained. The acting is also solid, especially from Compton. She is likable in her role and looks great. And, as a plus for skin fans, she does appear topless, even if it is rather quick.
She has sice done even more horror movies many of which have yet to come or are in pre-production.
I actually had the pleasure of meeting Compton this past Sat at the Chiller Theatre con. She is so sweet in person and even more of a knock out in the look department! This has helped to solidified my fandom for her.
Scout Taylor-Compton is one of the biggest, most popular, and most hard working modern horror actresses. She is amassing a huge genre (and beyond) resume. And, the plus side is that she has the immense talent and beauty to back it up. She has a naturally pretty face, gorgeous eyes, and stays in great shape. On top of this she is an immensely sweet and truly seems to love her fans and inclement in the genre. It is thanks to everything that I have said, that I officially make her an inductee to this site's Horror Crushes!
