Fréwaka (Review)

Writer/ Director: Aislinn Clarke
Cast: Clare Moonelly, Bríd Ní Neachtain, Aleksandra Bystrzhitskaya, Clare Barrett
Year: 2024
Min: 103

Shortly after the suicide of her estranged mother, Shoo (Clare Monnelly), a young in-home care worker, is assigned to care for an elderly shut-in named Peig (Brid Ni Neachtain). This old lady lives in a secluded town in the Irish countryside. She is also hard to care for, being untrusting of Shoo and generally paranoid. On top of her off fears, there is her weird beliefs. But, as they spend more time together, they grow closer. Eventually, Shoo, who is dealing with her own trauma, begins to think that maybe Peig's fears of those she wishes to keep from coming in the house, might, in fact, be very real.

Fréwaka is a supernatural/ folk horror film and the second feature from writer/ director Aislinn (The Devil's Doorway) Clarke. From the beginning prologue and the suicide that follows it, the movie sets up a very uneasy feeling. The fact that the flick is shot mostly in the Gaelic language adds to this foreboding feeling.

While, the pacing is slow the apprehensiveness of it helps to carry the movie throughout its running time. This is compounded by a continuous undercurrent of malevolence. The excellent sound design further adds to this helping the flick to get even more under your skin. I also really like the movie's use of religious imagery which make them come off as especially spine-chilling. Another key factor is its very somber tone tone.  Combine this all with it's use of past trauma and abuse, and  the flick manages to stay with you.

I do have to say that there is over reliance on typical tropes. For example, the phone reception sucks. You have other circumstances (covered up mirrors, creepy villagers, etc.) that you expect in a movie like this. This makes it sometimes feel as if it over relies on these motifs. However, for the most part these things don't really deter from film. They are incorporated into the plot, and their use, however typical they maybe, are well done. They help to add to the compelling and involving mystery.

The acting is very strong, especially from the two leads. Clare Monnelly is very likable and believable as Shoo. Brid Ni Neachtain is also great Peig. Her character is complex and feels very real (within the context of this story, anyways). And, as we get to know her, she too is very likable. I also really appreciated the way their relationship develops as the story moves along. It is credible and becomes filled with heart and pathos as we get closer to the climax. The scene between them in Peig's bedroom is an especially good example of this. As, it is a touching and heartbreaking study in PTSD.

Another factor helping the flick is that Clarke really does a good directing job. This is especially true of certain scenes that are really nicely shot. She also does a strong job with the movie's climax. As it is one that odd and yet intense and compelling. This, in turn, leads to the nightmarish and bone chilling ending.

Fréwaka is a well done supernatural, folk-horror film. It may use a lot of overdone tropes, but the compellingly mysterious plot overturns this. The acting, especially from our two leads, is great. While, certainly a slow burn, it builds up nicely, ending on a chilling note. The movie, itself, remains unsettling and haunting from beginning to that just mentioned ending. It starts streaming on Shudder on April 25, 2025, as part of their "Halfway to Halloween" programming. Be sure to check it out then.

Horror Crush: Jessica Belkin

Today, we have a new induction into Horror Crushes: the gorgeous Jessica Belkin! She hasn't been in much and is newer to the acting biz, than some other inductees. But, she made such an impression with me in her latest horror movie, that this felt like the right decision,

Jessica Belkin was born on May 16, 2002. She is from Los Angles, California and is an actress, signer, and song writer. She has been acting since she was a kid.

As a matter of fact, her first foray into horror was as a kid. You see in 2015, she appeared on the TV show American Horror Story: Hotel. Now, that season is the point where I tried to keep watching but just gave up the show, as a whole. I couldn't stand it and had honestly stopped giving a shit about it a long time before that season. So, I honestly don't remember if I even made it far enough to see her role in it. Anywho, she played the vampire child of Lady Gaga (who I do remember looking good in it). Any of you guys remember this role of hers? A year later she would have another (though I'm guessing smaller) child role, this time in a children's scary movie called Ghost Goggles. She is uncredited in the film though.

In 2017, she lent her voice, to the character of Kat Thomas, for the horror video game Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul. Now I never played this game, in fact, I don't think I even knew that Paranormal Activity had its own game! Anyways, if you guys played this let me know how it is? And, let me know how her voice acting was.

Then in 2021, she appeared in the horror movie Death Link, where she played a character named Tabitha. Again, I never heard of much less seen this one, but maybe one of you guys have. If so let me know in the comments section your thoughts on it and her role.

2023 saw her in the lead role of home invasion or more precisely diner invasion movie Last Straw. It's that movie and role, where I finally saw her, and she immediately caught my attention. And, it's thanks to it that she got this induction.

In it, she play Nancy Osborn a young waitress, who works at her dad's diner. She just found out this morning that she is knocked up. She has decided to not keep it. But, today she is pulling a double shift, including working the late night shift. The thing is a bunch of masked psychos and hoodlums are terrorizing her (she is by her lonesome self) in increasingly violent manners. She will have to fight for her very life in this place that is far from civilization.

I actually only saw this earlier this year, in January, to be precise. It kind of sucks that no has been talking about this awesome movie. It is an absolute and increasingly nail-biting crowd pleaser. Director Alan Neal Scott does a great job of keeping the proceedings intense, suspenseful, and violent. Plus, the main villain is a total asshole, piece of shit that is easy to hate.

As our final girl Nancy, Belkin is great! She gives a strong performance as a character that is tough, smart, and as easy to cheer for (making her the perfect polar opposite of our aforementioned antagonist). She is, of course, absolutely gorgeous. Her stunning eyes being one of her most beautiful features. You add this all up and it is easy to see how she immediately became a favorite of mine. Here is hoping she returns to horror soon. Also, here is hoping you check out Last Straw, if you haven't done so already. It's streaming on Shudder, which is where I saw it.

Belkin is a great actress with a very bright future ahead. She already gave an amazing performance in the very solid and incredibly suspenseful Last Straw. One that has already catapulted her to one of my favorites. This on top of being naturally gorgeous and stunning. It is with great honor that Jessica Belkin is the latest to join our Horror Crushes section!

The 10 Best Horror Movies of 2024

This past year was one hell of a year for horror! Various movies hit it big at the box office, as well as getting critical acclaim, and more! It took me a while to make this list, cuz I was holding off to watch Nosferatu. As neither Strange Darling nor Longlegs are films that I got to catch theatrically nor are they streaming for free, I have yet to see them. But, I couldn't keep waiting any longer to make this list, so here you go!

Honorable Mentions
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Sting
Wynonna Earp: Vengeance

10. Lisa Frankenstein- This flick from director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo (Jennifer's Body) Cody also gets my pick for most underrated horror flick of last year. The horror/ comedy is highly enjoyable, funny, quirky, wild, and actually pretty romantic. The 80s aesthetic and loving homages to the horror genre further adds to film's charm. The characters are wonderful, too, especially our romantic leads played by Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse. If you ever wondered how to make Newton even hotter, well here is your answer: make her an 80s goth babe! As always Cody writes some lively and really fun dialogue.
9. Arcadian- This post apocalyptic monster movie is another one that didn't get enough love. It felt like everyone was talking about it when it came out but was then completely forgotten. Which is a shame, cuz this flick is engrossing and suspenseful. It does a good job of being a horror movie as well as a heartfelt coming of age flick at the same time. The acting is really good, especially by Nicolas Cage. It also features a really intense climax, an awesome doggy, and some of the fucking weirdest and quirkiest looking monsters that I have seen in ages.

8. Humane- Caitlin Cronenberg (yes, she is, in fact, genre master David Cronenberg's daughter!) gives us a phenomenal directorial debut with this well crafted thriller. She really knows how to build tension and mix it in with bursts of strong violence. The climax had me cheering and on the edge of my seat. It's also well acted and deals with some very timely politics.
7. Nosferatu- I definitely fall under that category of people that find Robert Eggers' The Witch to be overrated and who, mostly, does not care for the so called subgenre that is elevated horror movies. However, I loved his take on this often told Dracula/ Count Orloff story. Sure it is slowly paced, but I remained completely captivated and enraptured by what was going on. It's certainly gorgeous looking, what with its use of saturated colors and heavy shadows (reminding me of the director's version of the amazing 1979 Dracula with Frank Langella). The flick is also creepy and plays homage to both of the earlier movies of the same title, while still being its own horrific beast. We even get some old vampire dick for good and gross measure!

6. Abigail- Oh man, what a fun time this flick was! A great mix of action and horror, it has a really exciting, fast pace. The plot twists are great and the characters lively. We get double the babe factor with Melissa Barrera (man, is the Scream franchise stupid for letting her go!) and Kathryn Newton (that's two Newton horror movies that got ranked here for last year!). The gore is absolutely awesome. But, what I love the most is our title character: little Abigail (wonderfully played by Alisha Weir). She is one of the best villains (especially in terms of vampires) that I have seen in a long time! The result is the best bloodsucker movie of last year. Yes, I liked it more than Nosferatu.

5. Terrifier 3- This wild third entry in this ultra-gory slasher franchise might be my least favorite, but not by much of the three movies, but its still an absolute blast to watch! As expected the splatter is phenomenal and graphic, with the bathroom double chainsaw kill being the best kill of last year. As with the two preceding entries in the series, the movie is deliciously cruel and is filled with jet-black and twisted humor. The gorgeous Lauren LaVera cements her place as one of the greatest final girls ever. Meanwhile, Art is as awesome and evil as ever. I also love the fact that it went out unrated and made a shit ton of money. The movie actually became the top grossing unrated flick ever (on a side note, a Beyonce concert held that top spot earlier. I was kinda hoping it was some cool splatter flick, but nope it's a fucking Beyonce concert film. Le sigh)!
I  hope this means that we get more unrated gore movies in the months and years to come. Bonus points for giving us a new Christmas horror movie to add to our annual viewing lists.

4. Late Night with the Devil- Mixing intrigue, suspense, and dark humor the plot of this satanic found footage flick builds up really well. It leads strongly into a great ending that is propelled by a very well done climax, all of which caps off this film perfectly. The directing and excellent acting makes you feel like you are actually watching a real, live broadcast. Without a shadow of a doubt Late Night with the Devil is the best possession movie in ages.
3. Alien: Romulus- This amazing sequel is a true return to form for the long running horror/ sci-fi franchise. Moving at an almost unrelenting pace, it is intense, suspenseful, and creepy. Most of the FX work is very well done, and are supplemented by excellent set design and production values. It also features some very strong acting especially from the leads. Our final girl, played by the lovely Cailee Spaeney, is great and a fitting successor to Ripley. Fede (Evil Dead 2013) Alvarez once again proves that he is one of the genre's best modern directors.
2. Immaculate- Immaculate is a classy yet suitably brutal mainstream take on nunsplotation. Michael Mohan's direction gives us a great looking movie with an intensely white knuckle feel. The flick builds to an edge of your seat climax that leads into one of the most holy shit endings that you are likely to see, particularly in recent memory. It's all held together by an amazing performance by the breathtaking Sydney Sweeny in one of last true year's true examples of breakthrough acting.
1. The Substance- Coralle (Revenge) Fargeat's second movie is beautifully shot with excellent use of close-ups and expertly edited leading to what is, quite simply put, a nightmarish tour de force. And, then there is the blood soaked climax which is even more bonkers than the insanity that preceded it! Which is saying a lot! Yet, as gruesome as this body horror flick is, it is also a deep and thought provoking look at women aging in Hollywood (and by extent the regular world). It's all headed by incredible performance by the gorgeous Margaret (One Upon a Time in Hollywood) Quailey and, most especially by the forever stunning Demi (The Seventh Sign) Moore. She gives the performance of her career. She already won a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical (let's not get into the whole this ain't a comedy or a musical thing, though, and just be happy that she got recognized for her acting), so here is hoping the Oscar's make the same call (and not ignore this cuz its a horror movie). Make no bones about it. this is a true modern masterpiece, that will be worshipped and studied in the years to come.

That's my list. What are your favorite horror movies from last year? Anything that I am missing (like I said earlier I did not see Longlegs or Strange Darling) here? Let me know in the comments section below!

The Demon Disorder (Review)

Director: Steven Boyle
Writers: Steve Boyle, Toby Osborne
Cast: Charles Cottier, Dirk Hunter, John Noble, Christian Willis, Liam Wallace, Tobie Webster,
Year: 2024
Min: 85

Graham (Christian Willis) has been estranged from his two other brothers, Jake (Dirk Hunter) and Phillip (Charles Cottier). This happened after dealing with the seemingly demonic possession, mental deterioration, and eventual passing on of their father (John Noble). He now works at his garage where he is helped out by a girl named Cole (Tobie Webster). Suddenly one day, Jake appears at said garage looking for Graham's help. Their younger brother Phillip is now showing similar behavior to that of their dad. Graham doesn't want anything to do with this, until he sees Phillip's behavior for himself. Reluctantly, at first, he decides to see what can be to help his brother, as he deteriorates mentally and increasingly horrific things occur.

The Demon Disorder is a 2024 Australian body horror meets demonic possession genre movie. It also adds heavy elements of familial drama. This is all filtered through a slow burn feel and style. The result works but in varying degrees.

The movie definitely starts in a manner that catches one's attention. It has this great tracking shot into an old, shitty looking house. After a nightmare scene, we see a skinless, bloody pig, that has to be put out of its misery. But, as I said this a slow burn. So after these scenes, the movie's pacing comes down quite a bit. I actually hate to say the following (especially considering how I ultimately felt about this flick), but, at first, I felt a little bored with it.

Another complaint, I initially had, is that it feels like we have been here before. What with the brothers arguing, in particular, over the fact that Graham left. It really felt like a typical trope a movie like this might take. However, it is setting up characters and their relationships, which as the film advances adds to the dramatic tension. These elements ultimately contribute heart to the proceedings, which is so important to the story being told. That all being said, I wasn't very keen on the jump scares, many of which just made me roll my eyes.

Still, after the one hour mark, the movie finally picks up. It is here that that said slow burn, finally pays off. In this last act, it builds and builds and gets better and better as it moves along. In fact, once the cops show up, it gets really exciting and turns into a wild and messy good time. This actually feels like a great pay off to what were the slower first two acts. All of the preceding moments finally come together and everything clicks. Plus, there is a cool and fun twist as to what is possessing Phillip.

That being said, it is the acting that is the movie's most consistently good quality. The cast all provide excellent and believable performances. This is of utmost important in a movie whose cast is really of a limited size. The two leads playing Graham (Willis) and Jake (Hunter) are particularly strong in their acting. Their interactions are, as I alluded to before, the central part of the plot. I also like that aside from the obvious The Exorcist influence, it also takes some elements from Alien and The Thing, in the monster aspect of it all.

The practical FX are, for the most part, excellent. About twenty minutes in, we get what is, up and until that point, the best part. This being a scene that has some great bladder FX, as well as the puking up of a crawling, hideous slug, like thing. I should also give a trigger warning, as lots of prosthetic chickens get killed throughout the film. Gonzo from the Muppets, best keep Camilla as far away as he can from this place! Anyway, the demonic beast FX are truly great! There are some weird and hideous looking monsters. And, as a monster lover, I couldn't be happier than when it suddenly became a creature feature. Plus, the body horror aspect of it all, lends itself to some great gross-out visual terrors.

You know, for a movie that starts off kinda slow and generic, it really does turn into a solid watching experience. The last thirty minutes or so are really wild and fun. The acting, by its limited cast, is excellent, with character and dramatic interactions that ultimately do payoff. It also has solid and gooey/ gross practical FX. Plus. I love that we get some monsters in this, cuz Lord knows I love me some cool looking creatures. In all, The Demon Disorder is an uneven but, nonetheless, good time to be had. One that will leave you feeling pleased after its over. And, you will be able to experience that, when it begins streaming on Shudder on September 6, 2024.
