Chiller Theatre: April 2023

This past weekend, April 28-30, 2023, marked another edition of the greatest convention on God's green Earth: Chiller Theatre!! On Saturday, the 29th, my friend Freddie and I headed out, had an awesome time, and met some amazing guests!

The first person that I went up to was the lovely Julia Nickson, who is best remembered for her role as Rambo's doomed love interest in the action classic Rambo: First Blood Part II. That's been one of my favorite movies ever since I was a little kid, so I was super excited to meet her. She was all smiles and sweet in person, as well as being still beautiful.

The two people I was most excited to meeting were the Scream bathroom girls. Their bitchy and mean role may have been short, but they're unforgettable! Plus, I had a little bit of a crush on them as a college student seeing the movie. First was the gorgeous Leonora Scelfo who played the cheerleader. She was fucking awesome in person! Very sweet and fun to talk to, she was also still stunning. She talked to us about her interest in being in Terrifier 3, but that she, herself, wasn't into horror. It really doesn't matter, cause she is too sweet a lady.

The lovely Nancy Anne Ridder was other girl of the two. She was soooo sweet in person! Seriously, she was wonderfully bubbly, friendly, and humble in person. She was flattered that I had a crush on both of them, and that they were the ones that I mosted wanted to meet. She let my bud, Freddie, get in on the first pic and just me in the second one. I swear both of these beautiful ladies are fucking awesome to meet!

Speaking of crushes, Lisa Fuller, a Horror Crush inductee was up next for me. I told her about how The Monster Squad has been one of my favorite movies ever since I was a little kid, how I had a crush on her back then, and how I was so happy she was finally doing cons! She was super sweet in person still so beautiful!

In keeping with the childhood crush theme of the day, the last person, I went up to on my own was the gorgeous Olivia D'Abo, That was thanks to Conan: The Destroyer, of course. It took a while to meet her, but she was worth the wait thanks to her being so sweet in person. And, she is still absolutely gorgeous.

My friend Freddie met Richard Young, best known from being in the prologue to the classic Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade. He is the guy who gets the crucifix that young Indy (the late, great River Phoenix) tries to get back. Young's character inspired his look movie, as the story goes. Anyway, I got to get in Freddie's pic with him.

We stayed a little for the party but were tired and didn't catch much. We did see Richie Scarlet who was back and was as awesome as ever!

The stuff that I bought there were:
A Screem magazine pack, which got me: Monster from Green Hell Blu-ray (which I've never seen but have been curious about)
Freeway 4K from Vinegar Syndrome booth. This is the first time that is uncut!! I am so pumped to watch this classic again!! That's something I haven't done in many years.

The autographs that I got at Chiller are:
Nancy Anne Ridder and Leonora Scelfo- Scream- Aside, from them being awesome as fuck, tell me their autographs are the coolest ever!
Lisa Fuller- The Monster Squad

And, so another Chiller ended, one that was one of the most fun times that I've had in a while. But, we shall be back in October! Did any of you guys go? If so who did you meet? Let me know in the comments section below.

Horror Crush: Bella Thorne

I met the gorgeous and uber-talented Bella Thorne on July 23, 2019 at her book signing (more on that later) in Barnes and Noble in Union Square, New York City. Thus, this feels like the perfect time to induct her into the Horror Crushes section of this site!
Thorne was born Annabella Avery Thorne in Pembroke Pines, Florida on October 8, 1997. She is probably best known for her role in the Disney Channel series Shake It Up. But, of course, I know her best from her horror work.
Throne's first horror role, though, is one I have never seen. In 2015, she played Nina Patterson in the MTV series of Scream in two episodes. Actually, I have never watched a single episode of that show, much less two. But, for those of you that have any thoughts on her role in it? Please, let me know in the comments section below. One thing is for sure, she looked amazing in a bikini!
It's in 2017, where she pulled double horror duty that, I became a fan. The first of the two that I saw was the super fun and bloody good, The Babysitter. In this horror-comedy, a kid has a crush on his super hot babysitter (Samara Weaving). But, one night while she is sitting him, he finds out that she is the leader of a satanic cult of teens! It's a colorful, totally enjoyable, mix of splatter, sexiness, and humor. This Netflix exclusive really surprised me with how much I enjoyed it.
Thorne plays the other female in the cult. She is hilarious in her role and sexy as hell! She looks killer in a cheerleader outfit (always one of my favorite looks for a girl) and makes-out with the beautiful Weaving herself, in one memorable scene.
The other horror flick was Amityville: The Awakening. This oft-delayed flick made its debut on YouTube, of all places, for free. This should be a sign of shit, but honest to God, it is way better than it has any right to be. In it, Thorne plays Belle a teenager who moves along with her mom (the always beautiful and talented Jennifer Jason Leigh), her little sis, and her twin brother to the most infamous house in Long Island. Belle doesn't know the house's background, or even the movies it inspired. This is actually one of the cool aspects of the film, as it is sort of meta-horror in that in acknowledges the existence of the movies (at least the first two and the remake).
Anywho, aside from two students, most don't take kindly to her, a goth chick (Throne as a goth girl is even hotter than her in a bikini or as a cheerleader!), being in the creepy house. Her aforementioned bro is paralyzed, left a vegetable from a accident. This which occurred from when he defended her honor. But, the house is really evil! So, it is not just a movie folks! And, it wants to possesses her brother.
I really expected this movie to be a of complete shit, but I really enjoyed it. Sure it is generic and does nothing new or that original. But, it tells a competent story and is well enough directed. Mostly, it's held together by strong acting, from the solid cast. Thorne is very likable and realistic in her role and really helps to carry the film. As of this writing, I have watched the movie three times, and each time it surprises how much I (still) like it and how solid it is.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post I met Thorne last Tuesday. She is promoting her memoir/ poetry book Life of a Wannabe Mogul: Mental Disarray. Thorne read little of the poems that didn't make it, including a heartbreaking one where she talks about why she doesn't reveal the name of the piece of shit who raped her as a child actress. She also took pics with her fans and we got pre-signed copies of it. She is incredibly sweet and down to earth person, being all smiles, hugs, and actually talking to her fans.
In fact, she gave me a hug (as she did with everyone else meeting her) and asked me what I thought of her reading. I told that I was touched, which is true (I was tearing up hearing her). But, beyond that I was a star-struck. I would have loved to tell her how much I enjoyed the horror stuff she did, but alas I couldn't say much of anything else. Still, she is a genuine sweetie and incredibly beautiful in person.
Gorgeous and multi-talented Bella Thorne really shines in all her work. I love seeing her in horror movies. According to the extra features of Amityville: The Awakenking, she loves horror movies! That only makes me love her even more! And, with that she becomes the latest inductee into Horror Crushes!

A Tribute to Wes Craven: Master of Horror Pt. 2: From a Shocker to a 4th Scream

For part 1, please go here: http://themastergio.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-tribute-to-wes-craven-master-of.html

Shocker (1989)- This was the first Wes Craven movie that I ever saw in the movies. And man back then, I was totally in love with it. I thought it was the coolest thing ever! The villain, Horace Pinker (as played by future X-Files actor Mitch Pileggi) was awesome! I had a crush on blonde hottie Cami Cooper, and the FX, to me, where just the coolest. Then, there was the soundtrack, which remains, to this day, a favorite of mine. With music from Megadeth (this is how I got into them), Alice Cooper, Dangerous Toys, Iggy Pop, etc, I was in metal heaven. It was around this time, that Craven became cemented as one of my heroes.
When, I watched again as an adult, I gotta say, it came off rather silly. And, I soon noticed that lead actor Peter Berg was not that great in the role, but he would go on to be a solid director in his own right (witness my favorite of his, Very Bad Things, for proof). But, despite its failings, Shocker remains way more fun than it has a right to be. It is, by far, the best of Craven's "bad" films. And, I CANNOT wait for the Scream Factory blu-ray to come out!

The People Under the Stairs (1990)- This is an odd one. Like Shocker, I LOVED this when I saw it in the movies. And, like that film, it's faults were clearer to me when I watched it again, this time with adult eyes. That said, the first half of the film feels like a throwback to the more hardcore and brutal Craven of old. Had it sustained this feel, it might be a minor classic. Sadly, it is marred by a way to happy ending and very pointless and annoying comedy. Still the villains played by Twin Peaks alumni Everett McGill and Wendy Robie are great, as is future My So Called Life star AJ Langer. I was about her age when this movie came out (like two years younger than her, actually) and developed a little bit of a kid crush on her. In fact, I did wished girls in my school looked like her. She blossomed into a beautiful woman, not surprisingly. Recent;y, Scream Factory did a special edition blu-ray of it, which I need to get.

New Nightmare (1994)- After the absolutely godawful Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (the WORST Freddy flick ever, IMHO), Craven returned to the franchise for this brilliant installment. Stepping out of continuity and into the "real world" with Robert Englund, the gorgeous Heather Langenkamp, and Craven himself, as themselves, he crafted a great meta-horror film, before he did Scream. Like some of his earlier work, he drew inspiration from real life. But, it was more prevalent here, perhaps thanks to whole meta-thing. Personally, speaking I loved the whole real world aspect of it. While, some it's flaws come further in repeated viewings, this remains a strong entry in Craven's work.

Scream (1996)- After the abysmal Vampire in Brooklyn with Eddie Murphy, natch, Craven bounced back with one of his biggest hits and most influential movies ever: Scream!! This one was made by word of mouth and slowly grew to a HUGE hit. I remember being blown away by it. I adored this film when I first saw it. Over the years, it has been tainted by rip-offs and sequels, so I had to pull away from it. In a recent revisit after years of not watching it, I loved it again. It's really a brilliant movie, with one of the greatest beginnings ever. It's influence and importance to the genre CANNOT be measured. While, I am not crazy about some of the slashers that followed, it helped to "rescue" the then floundering genre.
On a side note, I owned an unrated version of this film on lasersdisc. Sadly, we will never see that cut, again. Sucks, cause it was even better uncut. And, one more side note, dear God was Rose McGowan HOT as hell back then!!

Scream 2 (1997)- Hit it, while it's hot, I guess. So horror's new antagonist, Ghostface, along with the last movie's survivors/ heroes return only one year later. Not as good as the first film, by any means, but still a good little flick. But, really this style of slasher film was quickly wearing thin...

Red Eye (2005)- Dear God, Craven made some terrible shit around this time. Scream 3 and, even more so, Cursed were painfully awful, dreadful films. Which is why this one stood out, I think. Not really a horror movie, but more of a thriller; It's a pretty entertaining, even good little movie, whatever genre you refer to it as. Both leads are great. Cillian Murphy is an awesome villain, and Rachel McAdams makes for a very likable heroine. And, she looks great, then she always does. Unfortunately this movie is severely hurt by a ridiculous climax that no amount of suspension of disbelief will help. I remember watching that thinking to myself, "Really?!" *sigh*

Scream 4 (2011)- A true return to form after the unwatchable My Soul to Take (I mean I could not watch it! I switched channels on that shit!), this was his last film, sadly. But, at least it ends the series, and his career, on a high note. A smart, fun, and bloody (by far the bloodiest in the franchise, in fact), this movie is better, no make that  A LOT better, than it has any right to be. I really got a kick out of seeing this movies. It also solidified my thoughts that Courteney Cox is one of the yummiest MILFs around. It introduced the horror world to future American Horror Story actress the pretty Emma Roberts. Though her performance here is questionable, to say the least...

I hope you enjoyed this little look and tribute to Wes Craven's directing career. He is already so dearly missed. Thank you for everything, Wes Craven, and may you RIP.

The Top 5 Wes Craven Films

On March 13th the unneeded remake of Wes Craven's classic The Last House on the Left will be hitting theaters. The trailer seems to imply that they got it all wrong. So unless one of you has seen it and can tell they have done a nice job, I am thinking this one is more The Fog than Halloween or Friday the 13th as far as modern remakes go.

Craven has made some pretty shitty films, in particular in the last few years. I mean when your best recent film is Red Eye, well that says a lot or doesn't depending on your take on things. But, despite this the man has made some of the genre's most important and influence films. Here then are his 5 best movies:

5. - This movie bought back the slasher film, albeit in a much more Hollywood manner. While many of the films it inspired or that ripped off of it, or it's inferior Craven helmed sequels (the third one was terrible!), it still stands a solid film. The problem is that over the years the movie has not aged well and does not hold to repeated. Baring that in mind the opening scene is still a classic moment (in particular in the unrated cut, sadly only seen on laserdisc). There is some good acting and the climax is thrilling. I enjoy the deconstructing of the slasher film, but it has many faults. But, then you see a piece of festering and worthless shit like Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and really appreciate this movie. A classic despite all it's issues.

4. - Wes Craven and producer Sean Cunningham (who would go to direct the original Friday the 13th) gave us one of the most brutal and disturbing horror films ever made in this grindhouse classic. I think this film would be perfect if not for the stupid humor which is so out of place in a film like this. The villains are great in their role, in particular David Hess, who gave a career defining performance as scumbag Krug. The victims also give great performances, and the parents vengeance is highly satisfying. The brutal violence and degradation is still powerful, even after all my viewings and all the years that have passed. A film that is a landmark of it's time, it remains one of the greatest rape revenge films ever, topped only by Ms. 45.

3. - Before Craven deconstructed the slasher film with Scream he did it here. It's a great idea, that does work, but not as good as it could have. I have found that the film plays best the first time around, but regardless this a well written and acted movie. The lovely Heather Langenkamp gives a stellar performance. And, it is a blast to see Englund, Craven, Saxon, and Shay all playing themselves. The prospect of Freddy coming into the real world and terrorizing the lead from the original film is really an interesting. As is the involvement of such real life things such as actress stalking and the effects of violent horror on children.

2. - Continuing the more hardcore aspect of the horrors of LOTHL Craven wrote and directed this brutal, intense, and enthralling classic. The fact that both the villains and heroes are shown through their family life, adds an interesting dynamic to the proceedings. The attack on the family in the trailer remains one of Craven's strongest and most frightening moments. It is also highly satisfying when the heroes fight back. Avoid the Craven directed sequel or the sequel to the enjoyable, albeit inferior remake, as they both suck Micheal Berryman's asshole.

1. - Craven's best film is not only his scariest movie, but it is also one of the scariest horror films ever made. Like the early movies in his career this is an important and influential movie within the genre. ANOES took the slasher movie and added a new fantasy/ supernatural element that had not been present before. It is also a highly original and surreal movie that does a great job of presenting the world of our nightmares. The cast is good, with some classic performances. But, beyond all that it heralded a new horror villain in the form of Freddy Kreuger. While, the series would go down a more FX heavy/ pun filled style, the original remains a dark and terrifying movie and my third favorite movie ever.
