Leave (Review)

Director: Alex Herron
Writer: Thomas Moldestad
Cast: Alicia von Rittberg, Herman Tømmeraas, Stig R. Amdam, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Morten Holst
Min: 106

A baby, wrapped in a blanket with satanic symbols (I'm sure some of you will probably be wondering where to get one of your own!) and wearing an inverted cross necklace, is found by a cop. Cut to the present, where she is now a young woman named Cecilia (Ellen Dorrit Petersen). She wants to discover who are parents are, and why she was abandoned as a newborn. This is somehow connected to a black metal band, and, so, she heads to Norway (cause of course, it would be Norway!) to find out the truth. But, she lies to her adopted father telling him that she is headed to the college campus and dorm that she will be attending. In Norway, she meets a friend and, soon afterwards, the family of her mother Anna (Maria Alm Norell) and discovers that her dad had killed her mother. And, that he then set a church on fire with her body in it. But, the deeper she delves into what happened the more terrifying and dangerous the truth becomes, from evil that maybe supernatural or, perhaps, very much human.

Leave is a dramatic, horror/ mystery with an American and Norwegian cast. It is director Alex Herron's first feature film, though he has directed for TV. This allowed him to work on specials on hard rock and metal acts like the Deftones, BabyMetal, and Architects and festivals like Bloodstock, making him a solid choice to direct a movie that deals with this genre of music.  Shot in Norway this slow burn takes the heavy metal horror movie in a more serious and dramatic take than some of its more campy brethren. And, while it doesn't do this as wonderfully as say The Devil's Candy, I still quite quite like the way it deals with the subject matter. But, in reality, while metal serves as a start-off point there is actually oh so much more to this movie.

I also need to mention that I absolutely loved the opening credits. With their newspaper headlines mentioning fire and black metal, they do a great job of grabbing your attention. The framing of shots within the flick help to give it a great look. Then, there is the excellent score by Jamie Christopherson, which is actually one of my favorite aspects of the flick. It is both haunting and beautiful.

While it deals with metal, or more specifically Norwegian black metal, it does so in non-condescending manner. This isn't something I wasn't expecting at first, but as a fan of this music, I ended up being pleasantly surprised. It also deals with women's roles in patriarchal societies, family connections, and religion. Though to go into any of these themes further is to spoil the movie, so I will just say that they are dealt with well and add depth to the proceedings. Another plus to the flick is that it has quite a bit of heart to it.

The plot definitely takes its time to unfold. Some may even be a bit bored with it, at some points. But, I actually found myself invested in the mystery and like our heroine, I wanted to learnt the truth. This pays off, because at about the 1:07 mark, shit really starts to pick up. Once the truth begins to unravel, you will find yourself fully sucked into what is occuring. And, thankfully I found the revelations to be satisfying and well executed. The tense and suspenseful climax is great and had my heart pumping blood and my fists tightly clenched. It also had me absoluting hating the villain(s) and cheering for his/ their demise.

The flick is also aided by some strong acting and good characterizations. This is especially true of our protagonist Cecilia. Played by the talented and lovely Ellen Dorrit Petersen, she comes off as super likable and believable. She is introduced in a that we immediately see how sweet and down to earth she is. Within only a few moments you know enough to be and, ultimately stay, on her side all the way to the ending. The characters of those she meets from her biological mom's side seemingly come off as sweet, but you can tell something is off adding to the intrigue. Among them is her cousin who is quite the dick, and you'll wish you could punch the fuck out.

As a slow-burn, Leave definitely takes its time to get going. But, the mystery is involving and has a satisfactory resolution and revelation to it. I found the climax to be nail-biting and very well done. It's a mature and serious heavy metal/ horror flick that deals with black metal in an excellent manner. Though, to be fair metal only plays one part in the story. Beyond that, it has deeper themes, such as religion, than you might expect. Also unexpected, but ultimately welcomed, is the amount of heart that it has. It's also further helped by good directing and a beautiful score. Finally, the acting is solid, with Petersen playing a very likable lead. It begins to streaming on Shudder on March 17, 2023, so be sure to catch it then!

Emperor Announce Official Livestream Event "A Night of Emperial Wrath 2021" on May 23!

EMPEROR ANNOUNCE OFFICIAL LIVESTREAM EVENT "A NIGHT OF EMPERIAL WRATH 2021" TO MARK 30 YEARS SINCE THEIR FORMATION

"A Night of Emperial Wrath 2021" is set to take place on May 23 and will include guest appearances from ex-members Mortiis and Faust

Hosted by Munin Live, you can get your livestream tickets here.

"A Night of Emperial Wrath 2021" will take place on May 23, 2021 @ 2PM EDT/7PM GMT/8PM CET

2021 marks 30 years since the formation of extreme metal pioneers Emperor

Formed in 1991, their game-changing debut In The Nightside Eclipse (1995) set the template for symphonic, bombastic, melodic black metal, whilst their follow-up record, Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk (1997) became an instant hit.

Emperor were a force to be reckoned with as underground, experimental, and extreme forms of music twisted expectations throughout the end of the 20th Century. 2001 saw the end of Emperor with their fourth album, the ambitious and labyrinthine Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire & Demise

Scheduled plans for a celebratory concert have changed shape to suit to the times; instead there will be an exclusive livestream event, aptly performed in the Notodden Theatre of their hometown, Telemark.

The setlist will feature tracks from the entire catalogue, as well as very special guest appearances from original bass player Mortiis, who appeared on the Wrath of the Tyrant demo, As the Shadows Rise EP, and Emperor mini album, and ex-drummer Faust, who appeared on the As the Shadows Rise EP, Emperor mini album, as well as the landmark album In the Nightside Eclipse.

Emperor frontman Ihsahn says, "2021 marks 30 years since the formation of Emperor. With the current state of the world, it’s been impossible to go ahead with scheduled plans. We now welcome you to join us in an exclusive streaming event. The show will take place at Notodden Theatre, 23rd of May."

Nekrokraft- Witches Funeral/ Return of the Kvlt (Double Single Review)

Musicians: Nekrokraft
Single Titles: Witches Funeral/ Return of the Kvlt
Genre/ Subgenre: Black Metal/ Melodic Black Metal
Label: The Sign Records
Release Dates: Witches Funeral- June 5, Return of the Kvlt- August 21, 2020

Nekrokraft are a Swedish black metal band. They have re-recorded two songs, "Witches Funeral" and "Return of the Kvlt" from their 2018 EP Witches Funeral. The Sign Records have released them as two separate digital singles: "Witches" came out on June 5, meanwhile, "Return" just came out on the 21st of August (both of this year).

"Witches Funeral" starts off with a cool, little, stormy weather intro. It leads into a very atmospheric and dark sound permeating musical sound. That classic, cold feel of black metal soon envelopes you as the chainsaw guitars and crushing drums and bass come in. The melodic, yet devilish groove to it makes the song drown in atmosphere and very memorable. Vocalist Angst Norder has a very evil and hateful screeching growl that works perfectly with the deliciously witchy and evil lyrics. As a whole, the song feels hellish and chilling, filled a blackened, melodic style and soul burning atmosphere.

"Return of the Kvlt" has a crushingly heavy intro. This leads to full throttle assault with blistering blast beats and fleshing slicing guitar riffs. The drumming by Moloch is fucking brutal and thundering, as it plays off well with the guitar riffing, from Reaper and NekroDOC. The song goes from heavy to melodic and back again for an expansive, but always jet-black experience. You can also hear some death metal influences that help to make the sound feel and sound even heavier.

Both songs are absolutely fucking killer, with my preference slightly going towards "Return of the Kvlt". Either way fans of melodic black metal in the style of Dissection and Emperor need to take heed.

Sarcofago- Hate (Album Review)

Musician: Sarcofago
Album Title: Hate
Genre/ Subgenre: Black/ Thrash/ Death Metal
Label: Greyhaze Records
Release Date: May 15, 2020

The release of Sarcofago's Hate ends Greyhaze Records' complete reissues of the influential Brazilian band's recorded output (I have reviewed two of those here). Hate is often overlooked, but it stands out as a dark and fascinating release from the band. There are some bold moments, but this still has it's heart in black metal. The remastered music, taken from the original master tape, sounds fucking phenomenal.

The songs are crushing and filled with bleak and somber lyrical content. Topics such as suicide, murder, and madness are covered with punishing music. Songs tempos shift from groove filled crunch to unrelenting speed. The later is accomplished, in part, due to inhuman drumming. Mostly cause said drums are not played by an actual person but are instead programmed in.

The album opens with "Intro- Song For My Death" a blistering and full speed attack with morbid lyrics. The pure black metal assault of "Pact Of Cum" will batter you from the moment it starts. Speaking of speed, the title track has this punk meets black metal meets thrash sound, especially when coupled with the lyrics about hating, well every fucking thing and everyone. The thundering riffs of Wagner Lamounier's guitars in "The God's Faeces" are some of the coolest he's played. Meanwhile, the chorus of said somg will have signing right along. This all results in some killer fucking music.

Sarcofago's Hate isn't as talked about as some of their more classic work, but it still one hell of an album. With some bold tempo and style shifts, it manages to stand out in the band's discography. With this awesome remastered release, it will hopefully be listened to by more fans of early black metal. Just look over the use of a drum machine and enjoy the dark and ass kicking music.

Nocturnal Graves- Titan (Album Review)

Musician: Nocturnal Graves
Album Title: Titan
Genre/ Subgenre: Blackened Thrash Metal/ Death Metal
Label: Season of Mist
Release Date: May 18, 2018

Titan is the first new, third overall in their discography, album from Australian blackened thrash metal act Nocturnal Graves. The band which consists of current and former members of Destroyer 666 and Denouncement Pyr. The album is a furious and bile spewing demonic monster of a release. One, that quickly makes up for lost time and decimates all that stand in its way.

There is a seething anger and hatred that dominates this satanic slab of viciousness. Razor fast and driving the music, mixes elements of trash, death, and, of course, black metal, and gives us an album that definitely stands out in the underground.

The second track "Roar of the Wild" roars right into existence with shredding and slicing guitars that sound like Slayer taken to the blackest of extremes. From there it drives forward with speed, blast beats, and a pummeling attack. "Eccdysis, Shedding Weak Flesh" beats the listener with a slow and pounding, dark atmospheric feel that is evil, foreboding, and unquestionably heavy. The middle part where it slows down completely, with a rumbling undercurrent is guaranteed to chill the listener to the bone. The dark and anger filled "And Hell Followed Them" erupts as if from the very depths of hell, itself. Signer/ bass player J. opens the song with some of the most inhuman and demonic vocals you are likely to hear. "Bow Before None" has a South of Heaven meets early Darkthrone feel and sound to it, that is ferocious and utterly merciless and amounts to my favorite track on the album. The title song closes off the album with an almost doom metal like opening that builds into a locomotive like chugging and then sonic pummeling, that sears and slashes the flesh right off your bones, as the hate filled blast beats threaten to bring hell on earth.

Titan is an evil and heavy sounding attack on the senses. Haunting and blistering it does a killer job of mixing elements from various types of extreme metal. The result proudly shows off their influences while, making their own distinct sound. If anything the album serves as reminder of just how underrated Nocturnal Graves is and how it is time for the metal community (at least those into the more extreme side) need to stand up and take notice. Here is hoping that more will take notice of them and take this majestic and searing trip into the inferno.

The 20 Best Hard Rock & Metal Albums of 2017, Pt. 1: 20-11

2017 was a fucking awesome year for heavy music. Especially, for those into death metal, as it was rightfully declared the "Year of Death Metal" by Decibel magazine. Both new and old death metal bands put forth some great material. But, it was also another great year for thrash metal. As always making this list took a lot of thinking and, of course, the hearing of a lot albums. So let us not waste anymore time and get to it!

Honorable Mentions
Kobra and the Lotus- Prevail I
Overkill- The Grinding Wheel
Municipal Waste- Slime and Punishment

20. Necrot- Blood Offerings- An old school death metal album by a new band, that results in the best debut of 2017. My full review: http://themastergio.blogspot.com/2017/06/necrot-blood-offerings-album-review.html

19. Fit For An Autopsy- The Great Collapse- Fit For An Autopsy have delivered an angry and driving deathcore that showcase the subgenre at its very best. The music has a powerful and crushing grove and sounds like the soundtrack to complete and utter destruction.

18. Satyricon- Deep Calleth Deep- Heavy, hateful, and dark, this almost hypnotically sounding piece of black metal is best album of this style for 2017. Featuring the slow and driving sound that band has perfected in their last couple of releases it is the perfect music to listen as you are being dragged you into the very depths of hell!

17. Obituary- Obituary- The latest album from these death metal gods is one of their best in years. It features some great riffs that are catchy and have a really great groove to them. Some of these songs rank among the fastest and catchiest songs, the band has written in many a moon.

16. Kreator- Gods of Violence- The latest offering from Germany's greatest thrash metal export is crushing and devastating music. Some of the year's very best and most memorable songs come from here including the driving "Satan Is Real" and the anthemic  "Hail to the Hordes". Gods of Violence is one that I played a lot since the moment that I got it.

15. Winds of Plague- Blood of My Enemy- It's great to see a band genuinely seen as being rather silly, by some, like Winds of Plague mature and grow. Especially when the end result is the very best album of their career, thus far, and then some. Blood of Me Enemy is a more serious and musically complex work than their previous, but still enjoyable, output. and  Heavy and aggressive, it doesn't feel as interested in reminding just how cool or tough they are. Instead, the music speaks for itself and delivers multiple swift steel boots to your fucking teeth.

14. Cannibal CorpseRed Before Black- Red Before Black is Cannibal Corpse's best album since Torture, possibly since Kill. It is a solid and heavy, slab of death metal that is unrelenting and uncompromising. Songs like "Code of the Slashers" and "Heads Shoveled Off" are some of the coolest and most memorable extreme metal songs of the year. In fact, this might be the most straight up fun death metal of 2017.

13. Suffocation- ...Of the Dark Light- Holy fuck this is one unrelenting and brutal release! Determine to pummel your fucking head with savage death metal, Suffocation continue to churn out some of the finest releases in death metal. From the very opening of the blistering "Clarity through Depravity" and beyond this is uncompromising and technical assault as your likely hear at this level of spectacular quality.

12. Darkest Hour- Godless Prophets and the Migrant Flora- Anyone who thinks that there are no more classic albums to be made in the metalcore world needs to get a listen to this major ass kicker. Darkest Hour have pulled all the stops and made rollicking and vicious release with great musicianship and pounding breakdowns. This fucker is guaranteed to kick your ass from here to the next fucking continent. Songs like "This Is the Truth" and "The Flesh and the Flowers of Death" are some of the most badass songs of the year!

11. Cradle of Filth- Cryptopia: The Seductiveness of Decay- While, I greatly liked the last Cradle of Filth album, Hammer of the WitchesCryptopia: The Seductiveness of Decay blows it away. It is is without question the finest album CoF has made since Nymphetamine. The album is a dark and fully enrapturing piece of extreme gothic/ symphonic black metal. It takes all the things that make the band great and gives to us in droves. Honest to Satan, this is the first Cradle of Filth album that keep going back to listen to in ages and helped to remind me why I absolutely adored them many years ago. And, can I say that "Heartbreak and Seance" is one of my favorite extreme metal singles of the year? Another thing that is one of my favorites for this year is the amazing cover art! It is so fucking cool!

I would like to take this time to thank you all for your support in this year! May you all have a happy, fun, and safe New Year's! Stay tuned for the top ten albums of 2017!

Venom Inc, Goatwhore, Toxic Holocaust, and The Convalescence at Gramercy Theatre NYC 9/2/17

This past Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, I was on hand at Gramercy Theatre to cover a real ass kicker of a show, headlined by the legendary Venom Inc. They were accompanied on the tour by three truly fucking amazing bands. For those not in the know, Venom Inc, are actually speed metal/ proto-black metal pioneers Venom, themselves, in the form of original band members Mantas and Abbaddon. But, with the awesome Demolition Man on vocals and bass and original singer not Cronos.

Before the concert started the friends, and fellow journalists, that I was hanging with, got to run into Demolition Man (below, at my right) and Mantas (at my left, I am the dude in the Star Wars hat, in case you are wondering). Both of them are such nice guys! My friend Ken Pierce of PiercingMetal.com took the pic as well as any others where you see me with posing with band members.

The opening acting are deathcore act The Convalescence. Though, I have heard before of this band, this was my first time actually hearing their music. And, I can honestly say that I totally dug it! They play an adrenaline and breakdown filled take on the sub-genre, but with added benefit of keyboards. This adds a very melodic sound to the aggressive and energetic groove. They also have a very cool stage presence with corpse paint styled makeup, as well as a cool and evil looking keyboard.

The next band up are thrashers Toxic Holocaust. Though, the band is mostly a one man act by way of Joel Grind (right), they tour as an actual band. And, man do they ever kill! I been a long time fan, but seeing them live is a completely different experience. They are so heavy and bring such energy to their music that I was an even bigger fan, once their set was over! The sound of thrash metal that Toxic Holocaust plays definitely mixes crossover elements with German thrash influences as well as taking some elements from extreme metal, too. The result had the mosh pit fired up!

Set List:
War Is Hell
Wild Dogs
In the Name of Science
Reaper's Grave
Death Brings Death
Gravelord
Acid Fuzz
The Lord of the Wasteland
Silence
Nuke the Cross
Bitch

It was then time for Goatwhore to take the stage. I been a fan of these guys since their classic A Haunting Curse and have been following their career from on. But, I never got to experience their music live, either. Their current album Vengeance Ascension is a masterpiece that might just be the best in their career, thus far. It is most certainly one of the very best albums of this year!

They played a lot of songs off of that album, like the blistering ''Under the Flesh, Into the Bone'', ''Forsaken'', the title track ''Vengeful Ascension'' (all of which are some of my favorite tracks of the year!), and more. They also played some classics from their catalogue such as ''When Steel and Bone Meet'' and ''Baring Teeth for Revlot''. They closed their set with the killer fan favorite and modern classic ''FBS'', AKA ''Fucked by Satan''!

Their performance is filled with powerful energy and ferocity, as well as amazing musicianship. It's a battering musical experience that had the crowd, and, especially the pit, energized. I know that I, myself, was headbanging and really got into it, while taking these pics in the photo pit. They are without question one of the best live acts in extreme metal!

During the course of the night, I also got to meet members from the rest of the acts. They were all so friendly, cool, and down to earth and were happy to meet fans. It made an awesome night that much more fucking cool!.
With Keith Wampler and Katie McCrimmon of The Convalescence
With Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust

With three of the members of Goatwhore and Liz

Like many a metalhead, I have been a fan of  Venom for ages. But, I had never seen them live. As such, my anticipation to see them play was off the charts. The fans were also feeling the excitement for these legends to come out and kick everyone's ass. And, they more than delivered on that! They bought the house down like the influential masters of metal that they are.
They just recently put out their first album under the Venom Inc moniker. Called Avé, it is a ripping and ass kicking album of old school speed/ thrash/ proto-black metal. They played a couple of songs, of that. And, of course, they also played many of their classic tracks.
Set List:
Ave Satanas
Welcome to Hell
Metal We Bleed
Die Hard
Live Like an Angel (Die Like a Devil)
Warhead
Blackened Are the Priests
Carnivorous
Dein Fleisch
Don’t Burn the Witch

Black Metal
Countess Bathory
Encore:
Sons of Satan
Witching Hour
Throughout their set the fans were going crazy! They sang along, cheered, and chanted (Venom! Venom! Venom!). And, of course, the mosh pit was on fucking fire!
If you are a fan of Venom, then you must see them Venom Inc live! In all, this was an absolutely killer concert, from start too finish. One that kicked all of fucking asses straight to the very pits of motherfucking hell, itself!
