This Is Gwar (Review)

Director: Scott Barber
Cast: Dave Brockie, Ethan Embry, Bob Gorman, Jared "Evil" Hasselhoff, Slymenstra Hymen
Year: 2021
Min: 110

This Is Gwar is a music bio/ documentary about the legendary metal/ shock rock/ art collective, titular band. It tells its tale in chronological order beginning with the band's origins in Richmond, VA, and the art graduates who would go on to form it. It goes through their album and video releases and most, if not all, of the major spots in their career. The successes, slip ups, and tragedies are all covered, broken up like chapters, by each of these moments. Helping the story to be told and moved along are clips of videos, performances, and interviews with band and crew members, both past and present, and others who knew the band.

From the very get-go the docu starts with a really fun intro of people describing Gwar. I knew from that very moment that I was gonna love the fuck out of this. It sets up everything perfectly and lets you know that Gwar is unlike any other band that came before it. And, that, in turn, this documentary will be an entertaining and loving representation of the band and their story.

I loved learning about the beginnings of Gwar. And, how they had an open policy on artists getting to join them and work with them. While, I grew up on their music during my time in high school and college, I didn't honestly know any of this. Learning all these facts that I didn't know before is one of the best things about this flick, all while still being absolutely entertained by it.

The interviews with the band members, which include all or at least the prinicple ones, are honest and open. They talk with such joy and reverence, that it's obvious that they loved having been in or still being in Gwar. From there, we get some great stories like, for example, when they toured using an old school bus. Other celebs are also interviewed including horror filmmaker Adam Green, Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God, Kyle Shatt of The Sword, Mike Schliebaum of Darkest Hour, and, even, Weird Al. They all add to the story being told and speak highly of the band adding to the love for them that is felt.

Throughout the movie's runtime, there are some awesome clips both from their videos and live performances. We also get some snippets of some kick ass Gwar tunes. These factors add to the visual and audio appeal of this wonderful film. Which, in turn, adds to the utter joy I felt viewing this. Other highlights, and there are many(!), include legendary frontman Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus, getting arrested for indecency. This happened at a show where they had a priest with a prosthetic butt get swords, crucifixes, and more shoved up his poop shoot. Learning about their home video releases like Phallus in Wonderland, was also fascinating.

I also loved hearing about how Mike Judge was a fan of the band and got them on Beavis and Butt-Head, and how, in turn, it helped them get bigger. This led to them being a major part of the MTV metalhead duo's Sega videogame. Their appearances on Mystery Date, Empire Records, Jerry SpringerThe Joan Rivers Show, and more are also covered. I fondly remember much, if not all of this, and it really bought a feeling of nostalgia to me. In fact, watching most of this movie is pure and utter joy. Until it isn't. Tragedies like the passing of guitarist Cory Smoot hit hard. But, the documentary really pulls at the heartstrings when it gets to the death of Brockie. There is such pain in the eyes and voices of those being interviewed, that I honestly teared up as I listened to them.

There are some parts and events that aren't really mentioned in this docu like the short time addition of female signer Kim Dylla. As the story reaches the later years of the band, it kind of goes  quickly through whatever happened in this time period. But, then any documentary will more than likely miss parts or focus more on others, as it would last an eternity if it didn't. These types of omissions are almost a given. And, one wonders if maybe they were shot and subsequently cut out. If so will they end up on a future Blu-ray/ DVD release? Only time will tell.

This Is Gwar is a wonderful, energetic, and informative documentary. It covers a lot of ground, at a mostly exhaustive level. While, it deals with the later years in a quicker manner, you remain very informed on the history of the band. The interviews are honest, open, fun, loving, and emotional. There are some really cool clips spread throughout its running time, and, of course, some great headbanging song bits. This flick is the definitive word on Gwar and ranks as one of the most fun docus on a single band ever. But, one that never loses its ability to also touch the heart when it needs to. This is a must see for hardcore and casual fans, as well as those who are simply curious about this group. Shit, this might even gain them some well deserved new fans. It begins streaming on Shudder exclusively on July 21, 2022.

Necrot- Mortal (Album Review)

Musicians: Necrot
Album Title: Mortal
Genre/ Subgenre: Death Metal
Label: Tankcrimes
Release Date: August 28, 2020

Mortal is the second full length album from Bay Area death metal act Necrot. The follow up to their amazing debut LP Blood Offerings, this album continues to live up to all the hype and growing respect that the band has been garnering. It expands on their sound, while still being very recognizable as their work. Alternating between crushing and driving death metal it also adds flourishes of speed that show a thrashy and even a punkish influence.

There are only seven track on the LP, but just about all of them achieve the highest level of quality. Some of the highlights, which is saying a lot in an album filled with them, include the first track "Your Hell". Said song has a super, absolutely killer riff. I fucking love the breakdown it has a battering blast-beat that joins in that aforementioned riff for the ultimate sonic mayhem. If you are looking for fast, then turn to "Stench of Decay", an unrelenting assault of battering and riffing fury. The album closes off with my favorite song: the crushing title track. When the music slows down a bit for the chorus it is even more devastating. At 8:34 is also the longest track, adding a progressive element to the album. But, if you think that means that it is slow or weak, you would be fucking mistaken. It is actually an absolutely blistering track and one of my favorite death metal songs of 2020.

Tight musicianship and awesome riffs make Mortal one of the absolute best death metal releases of this year. I wasn't sure if they could top Blood Offerings, but they did with this follow-up. Mortal actually gets better with each listen, as certain parts or whole tracks become more and more appealing. Old school death metal fans, put this one at the top of your must buy list!

Toy Fair 2020- NECA- Geek & Metal Edition

In my last two Toy Fair posts (Toy Fair 2020- NECA Toys- Horror Edition, Part 1 and Toy Fair 2020- NECA Toys- Horror Edition, Part 2: Aliens, Predators, and Gremlins!), I focused on the horror related toy that NECA will be putting out. Now, it's time to turn the focus towards geek related figures, as well as those with a heavy dose of metal!!

First let's start with these cool as fuck Defenders of the Earth action figures. Do any of you remember this 80's 'toon, where Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, the Phantom, and Lothar teamed up to battle the evil Ming the Merciless? I loved it as a kid. I have no fucking clue, if it would hold up today. But, as I said before the figures are really freaking sweet looking!

NECA have a shitload of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures coming out. Based on the 80's toon, video games, and live action flicks, these are totally awesome!!

Now, it is time to fucking rock! We will be getting figures from The Misfits, Iron Maiden (based on the classic album Powerslave), and, most pleasantly surprising, Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D.)!! Fuck yeah!! These clothed figures rule!

THE RANGER (Review)

Title: The Ranger
Director: Jenn Wexler
Writer: Giaco Furino, Jenn Wexler
Cast: Chloë Levine, Jeremy Holm, Granit Lahu, Jeremy Pope, Bubba Weiler, Amanda Grace Benitez
Min: 77
Year: 2018

We begin with a prologue involving a little girl and a decidedly kind of creepy Ranger (Jeremy Holm) talking at a table, before the cops knock on the door. From there we jump to the present, or what is at least the present time for the movie. At a punk club, we meet Chelsea (Chloë Levine) a pretty, pink haired punk girl hanging and doing drugs with her fellow punk friends. When, the cops attempt a drug bust at said club. everyone flees.

A cop ends up cornering Chelsea, and her not very nice, to say the least, boyfriend Garth (Granit Lahu) stabs and kills him. Soon, Chelsea, Garth, and three of their friends are on the lam. They head out to her Uncle Pete's (horror indie favorite Larry Fessenden) old house, where she was raised by him, out in the woods. Yup, they're stuck in the woods, cause, of course, they would be. Anywho, it doesn't take long for their punky attitude to catch the attention of the same Ranger we met at the start of the film.
He soon tells them the "rules" that they need to be following while being in this national park, that he protects. In his eyes, they are unwelcomed assholes, save for Chelsea, whom he feels a sort patriarchal attachment to, or something along those lines. The punks could give a flying fuck though. They break all the rules there are and soon get picked off one by one.

The Ranger is a throwback/ homage to 80's slasher movies. So much so, that it might take place in the 80's, themselves. While never specified as such, none of the characters have cell phones, and they bring a boom-box with them. The film is done with a decidedly and, honestly, very welcomed punk attitude and heart. This leads to a very entertaining flick, that could have, under lesser hands, easily come off as the same old tired shit.
One thing of note, is that, truthfully, Chelsea is the most wholly likable character in the movie. Especially as she is bought to life by Chloë Levine. Levine plays her as tough, resourceful, savvy, and with her head, mostly, on straight. Levine says a lot with just a look from her big, blue eyes. She is one of the very best final girls in recent memory and a complete and total badass!

A great final girl needs a great villain, and that is exactly what the Ranger is. I always prefer a killer with an actual personality, than some empty shell of a hulking killer. Jeremy Holm wonderfully brings him to life. The character has this really wicked sense of humor, especially as he dictates the "rules", delivers some great one-liners, and/ or dishes out punishment.
One almost wonders why Chelsea hangs out with her friends, as they can come off as kind of being dicks. But, what we gather is the sense of family between these lost kids, who are bought to life by solid acting from the rest of the cast. More importantly their behavior adds to the punk quality and heart of the film. They, and the movie, itself, has this very anti-authority behavior that plays out perfectly as it becomes punks vs. crazed Ranger dude.

And, speaking of punk, it would be impossible for me to not talk about the music used here. To put it simply, I fucking love the soundtrack! It is an awesome throwback to movies with kick ass tunes like The Return of the Living Dead. I have complained in the past about the seeming death of the compilation rock soundtrack, especially in horror films. Well, this fucker happily brings that back. It really helps to cement the attitude and spirit that helps to set it apart from of its current brethren.
The flick doesn't have a huge body count, but that's cool by me. As the violence featured is brutal and realistic looking. Among the gore featured are blood splattering head shots, amputation, bisection, bloody bludgeonings, and more. The very first bit of violence, which happens to who is easily the second most likable punk teen in the movie, is a great set-off to the film's horror content. This is soon followed by the first kill which is a true, "Holy shit!" moment.

First time director and co-writer Jenn Wexler does a great job at building more and more tension as the movie goes along. I really like the way the movie starts. The aforementioned prologue is set in a way that seems sweet only to very quickly delve with a very creepy undercurrent. From there it cuts to some awesome punk music and fonts for the title scene. This all serves as a great introduction to what we can expect. The climax is wholly engrossing, brutal, and pulse pounding. It had me cheering my ass off, something not easy to do. The flick wraps up with a super cool ending.
The Ranger is a pure punk, slasher delight. It kicks some serious ass and rocks hard. The punk attitude and brutal violence make for cool bedfellows. Wexler makes a strong directorial debut, and I will definitely be keeping an eye on her future endeavors. Featuring a great villain and awesome final girl, it clearly understands what it takes to be a great slasher, and not merely passable. As a matter of fact, the more I thought about the more I like it! The Ranger is a Shudder original and will begin airing on the streaming service this Thursday, May 9, 2019. Don't miss it!

Five Points Festival 2017, Part 2

I got to see and meet John Holmstrom, a legendary artist who has worked with The Ramones. His work within the punk world is classic and iconic! I absolutely loved the pieces that were on display/ sale. He, himself, was very friendly and amicable.

Miaw Comic had some very cool and cute figurines and plushies. Their company is French Canadian and if you're a cat person, you will absolutely LOVE what they do! They even have poop kitties!

How can you not love poop, with cat ears and pentagram eyes?!

I absolutely LOVED the art of Mike Capprotti! He had some really cool pieces for sale, like the Deadpool Corps one that he is holding up in the pic, below. As a dog lover and Deadpool fan, for me it is everything!

Some of the most fun and funny art, at the con, came courtesy of Alex Solis. His parodies of various pop culture stuff is fucking awesome! And, is just so damn talented! I bought his Baby Terrors book which has kawaii versions of popular horror characters like Freddy, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Jason, the Alien xenomorph, Dracula, etc. He signed it for me, of course.
Trump is actually Mr. Burns! That explains everything! This fucking rules, by the way!
Pokeball stickers! And, yes that is Jigglyuff''s testicles!
You can see the coloring book I bought above. It is the brown colored book with big eyes that is to the right of the pic.

And, now for some random coolness:
Quicksliver from ''The X-Men''' movies! One of the few cosplays that I saw at the con.

Last, but most certainly not, below is the lovely Emily Ree and her Anarchy Dreamers comic. I really liked her cute and cool style of comic-book art! For more on her comic, be sure to go here: http://anarchydreamers.com/

To be concluded...

During my college years I read Lady Death and the rest of the characters in hercomic-book universe religiously. As such it was an honor at New York Comic Con 2016 to not only meet but interview her creator Brian Pulido. I had been a fan of him and his work for such long. We got to talk about Lady Death, music, and more.

(Video) Raven Rocket Talks Music and More with Us at AVN Expo 2016

Earlier this year, at Jan's Adult Entertainment Expo, we got to see my friend, Raven Rocket (formerly Raven Rockette, in case you were wondering). As such it was the perfect time to  catch with her and conduct a brand new interview. We got to talk about her delving further into music, her passion and love for it, and much more. As always Raven is not only breathtakingly beautiful but an awesome and lively person that brightens up any place that she is at.
