Superhost (Review)

Writer/ Director: Brandon Christenson
Cast: Sara Canning, Osric Chau, Gracie Gillam, Barbara Crampton
Year: 2021
Min: 83

Teddy (Osric Chau) and Claire (Sara Canning) are a couple who run their own travel vlog named Superhost. They have been losing viewers as of late and need to get their numbers back up. The latest place they are staying at and reviewing seems awesome and gorgeous. It is run by Rebecca (Gracie Gillam), who is eager for a good review from the duo. She seems nice, though very eccentric at first. But, it becomes clearer and clearer that she is insane, and the couple's lives are suddenly very much in danger.

Superhost is a 2021 horror/ thriller with slasher elements from writer/ director Brandon (Z) Christenson. The movie throws in some found footage along with the more traditional third person camera perspective. It also has a great sense of humor, that is sometimes deliciously dark. On top of all of this, the film also serves as a pitch-perfect parody of vloggers, while still achieving some wonderfully creepy moments.

Christenson is at the top of his directing game. You can see this from the very get-go, with a nice little title scene that effectively sets up the movie. The vlog scenes feel, look, and sound like something you see on Youtube. This includes the whole "like and subscribe" line, which we have heard and seen a thousand times over. As he proved in "Z", he is very apt at having a creepy tone. A great example of this are the shots of our antagonist appearing at nighttime. He also very effectively uses his camera framing and movement to further enhance the movie's mood and feel.

At a brisk 83 minutes it is very well paced and is always a great time to be had. The flick very effectively mixes the hilarious with the suspenseful. There are some really funny moments in the movie and others that are unquestionably filled with tension. It also doesn't fuck once it really gets going and has a killer and absolutely smashing climax. The ending is the perfect one for this film, making it end on a very high note.

There is a real fun attitude and feel to the flick, thanks in large part to the small but excellent cast. They really bring the strong script by Christenson to life, sucking you right into the story. Osric Chau and Sara Canning are very likeable as the couple. There is a real grounded feeling to their relationship, which makes them highly relatable. Genre legend and all around goddess Barbara (Re-Animator, Jakob's Wife) Crampton is awesome in her small, but actually pivotal role of Vera, a former superhost with a grudge of her own. But, it is Gracie Gillam's Rebecca that really steals the show. She is effortlessly both creepy and likable, many times being both in the same scene. In some ways, she is equivalent to a sort of female version of Norman Bates or The Stepfather, a character both likable and scary. Though, she is admit ably more fun or funny than either of two, classic psychopaths.

Another aspect I really liked was the score by Blitz//Berlin (Psycho Goreman, The Void). The ominous music combines nicely and fittingly with the excellent cinematography, handled by Clayton ("Z") Moore. A great example of this is the aforementioned opening which made me recall The Shining. The superb music also does a nice job of setting up foreboding moments in the movie.

Superhost is an incredibly fun horror/ thriller with some great, sometimes dark humor and is among the year's best. It manages to keep its tonal shifts flawlessly mixing the fun and the funny with the intense and creepy. The small but excellent cast really deliver the goods. But, it is Gilliam's Rebecca that truly shines and comes off as the horror villain of 2021. And, honestly, by the excellent ending, I was demanding more of her! The climax that proceeds it is suspenseful, shocking, and violent. Working also as a parody of vlogging, this winner works on multiple levels. You can catch it when it starts streaming exclusively on Shudder on September 2, 2021.

Commissioned by the Lutheran Society, the film is perhaps Romero’s wildest and most imaginative movie, an allegory about the nightmarish realities of growing older, and is an alluring snapshot of the filmmaker's early artistic capacity and style and would go on to inform his ensuing filmography. The “lost” film was restored in 4k by IndieCollect in New York City.

In Search of Darkness (Review)

Title: In Search of Darkness
Writer/ Director: David A. Weiner
Cast: Cassandra Peterson, Bill Moseley, John Carpenter, Keith David, Caroline Williams
Min: 260
Year: 2019

In Search of Darkness is a documentary about 80's horror, one of the most beloved eras in genre history. It is broken up by year in the decade and a couple of movies from each year. For example for 1980 we get: The Fog, The Changeling, Friday the 13th, etc. There are cool clips from these and many more movies. We also get segments on make-up FX, the VHS era, holiday slashers, and more. These parts come up between some of the years. The interviews are made up of those who worked on the movies and other horror celebrities, as well as genre writers and experts.

The documentary aims to be the definitive 80's docu. But, is it? No, but while it misses that mark, it comes close. Thankfully it is fun and made with much love and reverence that most of what it does, it does with great success.
The docu is off to a great start as the intro is cool as fuck! All of interviews are excellent. They come off as fun, informative, and revealing. It is also great that aside from the expected folk (John Carpenter, Tom Atkins, Barbara Crampton, etc), we get some cool surprise guests like James (The Angry Video Game Nerd) Rolfe, Corey Taylor of motherfucking Slipknot(!), and the gorgeous Katie Featherston of the Paranormal Activity movies. On a side note, why is this beautiful and talented woman not in more genre fare? That was one of my first thoughts watching this.

Anyway, some of the highlights include: James Rolfe saying that it takes several viewings to appreciate The Shining (so true!). Michael Gingold explaining why The Howling transformation is indeed better than the one in An American Werewolf in London. Joe Bob Briggs clearing up and saying that Tobe Hooper did indeed direct Poltergeist and to stop with the fucking rumor that Spielberg did! Yes, Joe Bob! You truly are one of my heroes! Elvira herself Cassandra Peterson and Darcy (The Last Drive-In) The Mail Girl are also awesome in the section on sex and nudity in 80's horror. These are just some of many awesome parts. I also like that aside from the classics they cover unexpected movies like Ghost Story, The Hunger, The Company of Wolves, and even freaking The Burbs from Joe Dante!

Unfortunately, there are some weird omissions, which bring the docu down from being definitive. The biggest one being Aliens. This becomes terribly clear whenever a movie featuring cast members is discussed like Near Dark and Pumpkinhead. And, even more so when the talk is about horror heroes and final girls. How in the fucking hell do you have this discussion and not mention Aliens and Ellen Ripley? I was honestly flabbergasted! And, don't tell me it is not a horror film, cause that is ignorant. It is certainly more so than The Burb. Which I want to point to out, I am happy to see mentioned but...

And, then there is the omission of foreign movies. How in the fuck does it not talk about Argento and Fulci movies like Phenomena or City of the Living Dead (AKA The Gates of Hell) or stuff from other directors like Stagefright, Demons, Anthropopgaus (Grim Reaper), and Cannibal Ferox (Make Them DIe Slowly). This becomes most apparent when discussing Brain De Palma's Dressed to Kill which is, rightfully, called an American giallo. Yet we don't get talks on Tenebrae or Opera. No documentary can cover every movie but at least some of these should have been here.
In Search of Darkness isn't perfect, but it is damn fucking good. The film is made with such love and affection for the genre, that it made me smile so many times that I lost count. The interviews and those chosen to take part in them are great. Throw in some gory clips and monstrous creatures and you have a winner. Despite, it's lengthy duration at 4 hours and 20 minutes, it is always a blast for horror fans to watch. Even though there are some head scratchily odd omissions, I enjoyed the bloody hell out of this!

The 70 Most Beautiful Women of 2018, Part 2: 60-51

60. Marisa Tomei- (last year #33)- The ever impossibly beautiful Ms. Marisa Tomei didn't get to be Aunt May this year in the MCU, but she did appear in the entertaining The First Purge. This wasn't as memorable role or as great a film as Spider-Man: Homecoming, but she is always a pleasure to see in a movie.

59. Tala Ashe- (new)- Legends of Tomorrow is really, by far, the most fun in the entire Arrowverse, and one of my favorite characters on the awesome show is Zari Tomaz played by the breathtaking Tala Ashe.

58. Bryce Dallas Howard- (new)- Beautiful redhead Bryce Dallas Howard returns to the Jurassic Park franchise with this year's entertaining, if predictable Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

57. Carla Cugino- (new)- Truly one of the most beautiful women in cinema returns to working with Mike Flanagan on another phenomenal Netflix horror project. This time playing the mother in the flashbacks of The Haunting of Hill House.

56. Bitsie Tulloch- (new)- It sucked when Grimm ended its run on TV. One of the reasons it sucked being not seeing its great cast on a weekly basis. Imagine my pleasant surprise, when one of its lovely stars, Bitsy Tulloch, appeared as Lois Lane in the year's super fun Arrowverse crossover!

55. Camila Mendes- (last year #24)- As much as I love Riverdale, and the gorgeous Camila Mendes, I do think that her character of Veronica Lodge has gotten increasingly boring. But, it is to no fault of her or her exquisite beauty.

54. Carter Cruise- (last year #18)- Carter Cruise remains not just one of the most popular girls in the industry, but one of my personal favorites as well. A great performer, a gorgeous beauty, and a fun personality keeps her star shining bright as fuck!

53. Adeline Rudolph- (new)- I absolutely adore Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. And, while the awesome horror series has its share of beautiful ladies my favorite looker is Adeline Rudolph. Playing one of the weird sisters, Agatha, she is a perfect combination of the goth and the exotic beauty, as well as being deliciously bad.

52. Ash Costello- (last year ranked 2015- #1)- The former queen of this list returns thanks to an EP put out by her band New Years Day, Diary of a Creep, and an awesome tour with Halestorm and In This Moment, which I had the pleasure of seeing at their New York City. Also, cause she is looks hotter than ever!

51. Barbara Crampton (last year ranked 2016- #41)- The always busy queen of horror Barbara Crampton never fails to amaze with her ever ageless beauty and absolute talent. This year she appeared in Puppet Master the Littlest Reich and on this Oct's season of Channel Zero.

BEYOND THE GATES (Review)

Title: Beyond the Gates
Director: Jackson Stewart
Writers: Stephen Scarlata, Jackson Stewart,
Cast: Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, Barbara Crampton, Matt Mercer
Year: 2016
Min: 84

After their dad disappears two estranged brothers, Gordon and the more reckless John (Graham Skipper and Chase Williamson, respectively), meet up for the first time in years. They look through and gather the videotape remnants of their father's old school VHS rental store. In doing so, they eventually run across a VHS game called Beyond the Gates.
They pop in the tape and watch. It is hosted by the a hauntingly beautiful woman named Evelyn  (Barbara Crampton) and is shot in black and white. They decide to actually play the game later in the day, wherein Gordon's pretty girlfriend, Margot (Brea Grant) also joins them. But, things begin to get downright creepy as Evelyn speaks directly to them, names and all. She tells them that they must beat the game in order to see their father. As people begin to die, and they are haunted by increasingly horrific images and occurrences, they want to stop but cannot. As once the game starts it must be played to the end, in order from them all to live and save their father.
Beyond the Gates is the feature film debut from director/ co-writer Jackson Stewart, who cut his teeth on TV including an episode of Supernatural. This film played late last year at some festivals, but it is currently making its first major run on Netflix. While, the movie has its share of flaws, it is most definitely worth a look. There is a wonderful throwback to the 80s feel that makes it endearing.

I'll start with the movie's faults, though. The pacing is a bit off and takes a bit to start. Once the action starts rolling, though, it still has a problem keeping a consistent pace. For a good chunk of it not a lot of interest or excitement seems to happen. The climax starts off pretty good, but it doesn't have the kind of payoff that this movie needed. In fact, when it was all resolved, all I thought to myself was, ''Uh, really that's it?'' I was pissed but I wasn't fully displeased. It ultimately left me accepting it for what the resolution was.
As a director Stewart, handles the dramatic aspects decently enough. Even if, at times, they feel a bit pedestrian. The low budget aspect of the film certainly hurts it, but he does what he can. To the movie's advantage he does not hold back on the gore. While, there is not a huge body count in it, the few kills that do happen are graphic in nature.
A lot of its entertainment value is derived from the endearing quality of it. This is especially true for those of us who grew up in the 80s with VHS and, of course, VHS games. I never played a single VHS game, but I knew of them and was always curious. VHS tapes were a huge part of my growing up. And, while I feel only nostalgia towards them, but their importance is significant to anyone of my generation.
The other draw of the film is the acting. Our three heroes, played by Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, and Brea Grant, do a good job with their roles. They play well enough off of each other and feel believable in their roles. The always beautiful horror legend Barbara Crampton is great as the VHS game host Evelyn. She seems to relish playing this evil lady and with her inherent beauty, adds a great deal of gothic sex appeal.

A throwback and tribute to the 80s, Beyond the Gates is a flawed but fairly, entertaining movie. The pacing is slow, and at times, uneven. The resolution of the otherwise exciting climax is flat. But, the flick has a lot of heart and love for the 80s, in particular VHS and VHS games. This gives a level of an endearing quality for those who grew up in this time period. The acting is also good, and the gore is great. The presence of Barbara Crampton is a very welcome factor and helps to seal this a recommended look. With it currently streaming on Netflix, there really isn't reason to miss it.

The 70 Hottest Babes of 2016, pt. 3: 50-41

50. Catrina (Karlee Leilani Perez) (new)- The only woman to be involved in wrestling that made the list this year also happens to be THE sexiest woman to be currently and actively working in the wrestling world, she is Lucha Underground's beautiful Catrina. Real name Karlee Leilani Perez, as Catrina she plays an evil, sexy, and possibly immortal heel valet who accompanies one of the companies scariest and most badass wrestlers, Mil Muertes! She controls said undead wrestling monster and is known for her lick of death given to wrestlers, both male and female(!!) laid out on the floor, as a sign of their end is to come. She also wears sexy, tight outfits, and like it has been said here before, being bad is fucking sexy!

49. Rachel McAdams (new)- One of my long time favorites played the former girlfriend of Doctor Strange in the very enjoyable movie of the same name. While, she wasn't given the most deep or profound role, she was very likable in it. And, she looked great. I also wanna say that if more doctors looked like her, more people would want to go to the doctor!

48. Felicity Feline (new)- Adult performer, drummer, and DJ, the beautiful and multi-faceted Felicity Feline is rapidly developing a huge and loyal following. She also gave me a great interview last month at Exxxotica NJ, that has become one of my most popular posts ever, in an almost record amount of time!

47. Violett Beane (new)- Playing Jessie Quick, the beautiful Violett Beane had very quickly become the hottest babe on The Flash. I also genuinely loved her character and her portrayal of her. Plus, she happened to look damn cute in THAT superhero outfit! It does suck that her character is currently not on the season, anymore. Here is hoping she comes back sooner, rather than later, this season!

46. Lzzy Hale (last year #33)- Releasing one of the best albums of last year, Into the Wild Life, I was pumped to see Lzzy's band Halestorm after having not seen them for what felt for too fucking long. And, boy did they ever deliver with one of the best shows that I saw this year! Lzzy is an AMAZING performer live with a voice to die for. Of course, she remains one of hard rock/ metal's most beautiful and awesome women .

45. Cara Delevingne (new)- Let's be honest (aren't I always?), Suicide Squad, while being the best of the DC Universe movies, was a freaking uneven mess. And, the Enchantress was a cool character used in an awful manner. In fact, she shouldn't have been the threat at all. The beautiful lady who played her, Cara Delevingne didn't do much other than shack her sexy hips. But, damn did she ever look good in THAT outfit. Even if her performance left much to be desired (I am blaming the writing and NOT her), she is completely desirable!

44. Jillian Janson (last year #20)- One of the most naturally beautiful ladies in the adult biz, Jillian also remains one of its' most popular. Aside, from nominations and awards, she has a huge and loyal fan following. I once again got to interview her at the AVN Expo. And, it, once again, became one of my most viewed posts! But, with her stunning beauty, sweet, naturally, bubbly personality, and, of course, smoldering sex scenes, how it not be?

43. Scarlett Johansson (last year #42)- Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow had a great conflicted storyline in this year's phenomenal Captain America: Civil War. As always, she looked AMAZING in THAT tight outfit and kicked some major ass in the movie.

42. Jaimie Alexander (last year #35)- Jaimie Alexander's Jane Doe is having a very interesting and strongly conflicted/ emotional storyline on the most badass action series on TV, Blindspot. With the whole idea of her "brother" being a member of the terrorist group, that she and the rest of our heroes are battling, Alexander got a lot to play with. And, needless to say she kicked ass and looked so fucking good doing just that!

41. Barbara Crampton (new)- at 57, scream queen and horror legend Barbara Crampton still looks AMAZING! And, I mean it! She is a breathtaking beauty, one that like fine wine, gets better with time. I know, I know, that is a cliched thing to say. But, who gives a fuck? I mean it when it comes to her. Do you want proof? Look at the photoshoot that she did for Delirium magazine, which resulted in one of the most beautiful covers that I have seen on a horror rag all year! She is also giving some amazing performances, like the well made Road Games.

Chiller Theatre Oct 2015

It had been a very long time (much too long if you ask me) since I had last gone to an Oct Chiller Theatre Convention. And, it was definitely time to change that. So, on Sat. Oct. 24, 2015, I went there with my good friends Freddie and Matt.

The first person that I went up was the beautiful Barbara Crampton. I actually had met her many years back at an old Fangoria Weekend of Horrors, but I didn't have anything for her to sign, expect for the con program. But, I had been wanting to meet her again. After all, Re-Animator is my not just my favorite horror movie, but my favorite movie (of ANY genre) of all time. And, she's been in so many other favorites of mine like From Beyond and Castle Freak. Add to that the fact that I had THE absolute and completely biggest crush on her as a kid, I just had to. And, so I did. Barbara signed my blu-ray of Re-Animator and is just so sweet in person! She loves talking to her fans and is so friendly and down to earth. Not to mention that she is still utterly breathtaking in her beauty!

Next was the Godfather of Gore himself, H.G. Lewis. He was really cool in person, and his assistant was really nice, too. They got a kick that I was a gorehound who carried around a Spongebob folder. He's another person that I had wanted to meet for a long time. I saw him talk at a Fango con once, but he wasn't signing at that one. Well he signed my Wizard of Gore/ Gore, Gore Girls blu-ray, at this one. And, I couldn't have been happier!

The last celeb that I went up was Frankenhooker, herself, the beautiful Patty Mullen. This former Penthouse Pet of the Year and guest judge on one of the editions of WCW's Clash of the Champions is still gorgeous and also very friendly in person. She talked to us and signed my blu-ray copy of Frankenhooker (which I had already gotten signed by the film's writer/ director Frank Henenlotter).

From then it was just hanging out and buying cool shit. As, this is the Oct show, there was lots of cosplay on hand.
This Walking Dead inspired walker guard was freaking cool!
My friend Maria and her brother had THE best cosplay of the night with this kick ass one form Little Shop of Horrors!

After dinner Matt and went back to our room and got into our costumes. This was the first time we had ever done this for Chiller or any other con. And, it was a total fucking blast!! Matt was dressed as one of the Hanson brothers from Slap Shot, while I was the Sith Lord himself, Darth Vader!

The past meets the future as Klyo Ren and I team-up and try to turn this Hanson brother to the dark side!

One of the my favorite costumes had to be this beauty. She was doing the cheerleader from Nirvana's classic video "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I always had a thing for the cheerleaders from that video (cheerleaders + anarchy symbols + great music = everything!). So, seeing someone as truly beautiful as this stunner was in that outfit truly made my night! She was glad I her recognized her costume cause she says a lot don't. Well, I am just gonna say this here: those people are probably lame anyway.

Darth Vader and the Hitchhiker from Creepshow 2 are not happy about YOU killing us!

As always the music was just kicking some major ass and adding to the fun of the Chiller party!
This cutie photobomed my selfie earlier, and she made for such a sexy Harley Quinn that I had to get a pic with her!
 Lady Loki and Wolf-Cop!
Darth Vader meets those damn Peanuts kids!
 Four badasses at Chiller!

At last, Darth Vader vs. Ash from the Evil Dead movies!
Her Blade Runner costume was just awesome! I told her that I loved it and that said film is one of my favorite movies (which it most definitely is!)

This little kid loved my costume, which really made me smile and touched my dark Sith heart. His parents, fellow horror fans, made his costume which lit up was just so cool!

One of the many fun things was how many people wanted to battle me, the Sith Lord!
This little doggy was just too freaking cute and tiny!
Well, Chiller was a blast, and I hope to never let so much time between Oct Chillers happen again. I also think I may need to do more cosplaying, at this show! Cause I fucking loved it!
