The 30 Best Horror Films of the 2010's

The 2010s have ended, and it's time to look back at the very best in horror that that decade had to offer. There weren't that many clear trends, as we had remakes, ghosts flicks (with way too many shitty jump-scares), home invasions, horror comedies, gorefests, and more. Whatever the case maybe, it was hard narrowing it down to just 30, but I feel very pleased with what I picked. Let's not waste anymore time and get right into it!

30. You're Next (2011)- Adam Wingard's rollicking horror comedy has one of the best final girls in the gorgeous Sharni Vinson's Erin and ends up being one of the finest home invasion flicks in recent times.

29. The Woman (2011)- Arguably Lucky McKee's best film, The Woman is one fuck of a brutal and uncompromising viewing experience. It also stands has a powerful feminist view years before the current cinematic state. Throw in some excellent acting and you have one of the best hardcore splatter flicks of the last decade.

28. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2017)- This chilling and intense supernatural horror flick is ghost (and witch!) horror done right. It builds tension and is genuinely creepy. The more the movie moves along the tighter you'll grasp your chair. Throw in some superlative acting from the small cast, and you have a real winner.

27. The Shallows (2016)- The Shallows is one of those films that has gotten better with time and viewings. It is a nail-biting horror-thriller that also happens to be beautiful looking, and just cause of its gorgeous star Blake Lively. Lively makes for a great heroine and proves that she is more than just a perfect body. Truth is this film is one of the best shark horror movies ever!

26. Incident in a Ghostland (2018)- From Pascal Laugier, the director of the vicious Martyrs comes this brutal and under-seen masterpiece. Hopefully, with Shudder starting to stream it last year, more have. My full review.

25. The Devil's Candy (2015)- A truly chilling and unnerving heavy metal/ horror movie from The Loved Ones (2009) writer/ director Sean Byrne. My full review.

24. Green Room (2015)- Another movie that gets better with repeated viewings, punk rock/ horror/ thriller Green Room is intense as fucking hell. It also features an amazing performance by Patrick Stewart as the lead neo-Nazi scumbag as one of the best bad guys (and easy to root against) in a genre film in the past decade.

23. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)- Wild horror/ comedy that works best with the less you know of it. My full and non-spoiler review.

22. Crimson Peak (2015)- A beautiful (in fact it is one of the most gorgeous horror movies of the last decade) and wonderfully acted horror/ Gothic romance from Guillermo Del Toro that is one of the very best ghost movies around. It is horribly underrated and should have been seen by more. Hopefully by now, you all have.

21. Train to Busan (2016)- Just when we were all ready to keep the zombie movie in the fucking toilet, comes this thundering ass kicker from Korea. A full throttle mix of action, gore, drama, and intensity that deserves all the praise it gets.

20. Get Out (2017)- A smart and timely horror movie from Jordan Peele got the rare kind of love (IE Oscar attention) for a genre movie. But, with its smart, deep, and. at times, funny script, excellent acting. and superlative directing it is more than worth it. Plus, it is highly entertaining, something completely missing, from most, if not all, of those other, so-called "elevated" (holy fuck, do I ever abhor that term!) horror movies.

19. It: Chapter One (2017)- This ridiculously successful horror flick, is one of the finest Stephen King adaptations ever made. It also has one of the best child casts ever, in any movie of any genre. The second chapter is alright, but a letdown, so let's just concentrate on our love for this one, OK?

18. Black Swan (2010)- Featuring an amazing performance by Natalie Portman, this is a nightmarish, searing, and, sometimes, sexy flick. Darren Aronofsky's modern masterpiece is really one of the best psychological horror movies ever made.

17. Raw (2016)- Alternately sexy, shocking, smart, and repulsive French horror movie is one of the best Euro-horror flicks of the last couple of years. Wonderfully acted and made, Raw shows us that the French are still kicking ass in our beloved genre.

16. The Conjuring (2013)- James Wan's scary modern classic (and his best movie to date) created its own world, the highly successful The Conjuring Universe, and is one of the best ghost movies ever fucking made. My mini review.

15. The Final Girls (2015)- A smart, loving horror comedy with a ton of heart. My full review.

14. Anna and the Apocalypse (2018)- Truly one of the greatest Christmas horror movies, this flick is one hell of mix of comedy, zombie, musical, and the holiday. And, unlike a lot of musicals, I actually love the tunes in it! Gory, funny, exciting, moving, and fun, with a wonderful turn by the lovely Ella Hunt as the title character, this is one I truly love.

13. Deathgasm (2015)- A gore drenched splatterfest, this headbanging and utterly hilarious fucker might just be the king of heavy metal horror movies. It has everything you could ever ask for: demons, metal love and music, hot babes, nudity, sex toys as weapons, and ton of fucking gore.

12. Piranha 3D (2010)- Blood drenched, sexy, and frequently funny remake might just be better than even Joe Dante's own cult classic. Filled to the brim with graphic gore, babes (including Elisabeth Shue, Riley Steele, Gianna Michaels, Kelly Brook, and more!), nudity, lesbianism, and an awesome cast, it is without a shadow of a doubt the best aquatic horror flick of the last decade.

11. Better Watch Out (2016)- This one ranks right next to Gremlins and the original Black Christmas as one of the greatest Christmas horror movies ever made. It also falls under the less you know about it, the better category. A nasty, fun, and twisted flick with great acting from its young leads, that is completely my cup of blood and excellent in repeated, and yearly, viewings.

10. Gerald's Game (2017)- Mike Flanagan's incredible adaptation of one of my favorite Stephen King books. My full review.

9. Evil Dead (2013)- Fede Alvarez' gorefest is one of the most fun moving going experiences of the last decade. It also might be the bloodiest big-studio film ever made. Combine it with Mia, who as played by the beautiful Jane Levy, is one of the absolute best horror heroines ever! Now, can we please get the fucking sequel, like right fucking now!!

8. Starry Eyes (2014)- A bloody, smart, and nightmarish horror flick with a killer performance by the beautiful Alex Essoe. My full review.

7. Happy Death Day (2017)- Talk about a movie for whom my love has grown and grown. Of all the movies, that are listed here, it is probably the one I have seen the most times, at least in terms of shortest period of time. Funny and wild this slasher/ comedy take on Groundhog Day holds a very special place in my heart. The awesome Baby-Face Killer has one of my favorite masks ever. And, its final girl Tree, as portrayed by the breathtaking Jessica Rothe, is honest to God one of the best the genre has ever seen.

6. Revenge (2017)- This superlative French, feminist badass of a movie is one of the greatest rape-revenge movies ever made. My full review.

5. Excision (2012)- An alternately twisted, funny, moving, sexy (in messed up sort of way), and gory coming of age film that with an amazing performance by the breathtaking goddess AnnaLynne McCord. Her character is one of my favorite, complex females in horror of the last decade. Playing her mom is Traci Lords in the greatest role she has ever had. The fact that this superlative masterpiece only gets better with multiple viewings is that much more impressive a feat.

4. American Mary (2012)- The Soska sisters introduced us horror fans to Mary Mason in this modern classic. My full review.

3. Mandy (2018)- A true masterpiece Mandy mixes Mad Max style revenge, with David Lynch and Dario Argento influences, gore, and a metal heart and style to deliver the most original horror movie of the 2010's. Gory, insane, is has an evil, hippie cult, demonic bikers, chainsaw mayhem, and an unhinged and awesome Nicolas Cage. There is no fucking movie quite like it. Plus, the Cheddar Goblin fucking rules!

2. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)- Speaking of Mad Max, this fucker combines that with the zombie flick,and the result is the absolute best zombie movie since Shaun of the Dead. My full review.

1. Doctor Sleep (2019)- Mike Flangan's adaption of the Stephen King book of the same serves as a sequel to both The Shining book and movie. And, dear friends, ain't easy to pull off. Yet, he does it so amazingly in this the best horror movie of all of the 2010's. If you were one of those who fucked up and missed it in the movies, be sure you correct that shit when it comes out digital download and Blu-ray (February 4, in a director's cut!).

(Video) My Blu-ray & DVD Collection Part 1: Some Sets, TV Shows, & the Letter A

This is something I have been thinking about doing, forever, and that is showing my Blu-ray and DVD collection on a series of videos. My collection is massive and ever growing. Movies, especially horror films, are my life. I love to buy physical media (SORRY, I do not do digital downloads).

In this first of a multiple part series, I will show you some box sets, TV shows, and all of the letter "A". Within these sections, I also show which ones are signed, as well as, talk a little about some discs and my thoughts, here and there.

The 10 Best Movies of 2013

It's that time again, for me to pick my choices for the 10 best films of last year. It took me some time, to get this list just right. But, it's ready, and I hope you enjoy reading it. As always, my top 10 list is probably different than other ones out there, but that's only cause I don't exactly have typical tastes. Well, let's not waste anymore times, here we go!

10. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox- This adaptation of the  DC graphic novel is exciting. thrilling, and jaw-dropping. Taking place in an altered world where heroes have become villains and war has ripped the world apart, this is the most violent of all the DC animated, as well, as the finest one since Wonder Woman, as well as the best superhero film of all the ones released last year.

9. Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th- The first of two docus to make my list this year, is this exhaustive film which chronicles all the movies, including the TV show!! Immense in it's scope and research this is the docu to end all Jason docus. A must for a fans, though it may take you a few days to get through it!

8. Would You Rather- Perhaps the most underrated horror film this year, this smart and hard edged shocker has one of the best scripts of the entire year. Plus, the acting of both Jeffrey Combs and Brittany Snow are great! As, is the ending, and fans should be pleased that the lovely Sasha Grey is in this, too. See it, if you are one of those that missed this!

7. Evil Dead-  This remake was way better than it had any right to be. Fun and blood drenched this over the top gorefest, might be the bloodiest big studio horror ever. I was shocked to see just how much I enjoyed it, but it ranks as one of the year's most fun movie going experiences I had, when my friend Kristie and I saw it. The FX are top notch and the lovely lead Jane Levy is great addition to horror heroines. Easily ranks among the best of the remakes.

6. Blackfish- The second docu on my list is a moving piece of cinema that had me bawling my eyes out and infuriated at Sea World. I was deeply bothered by the atrocities and horror stories this film revealed. It's caused quite a movement, as it should, and it's expertly told. I swear to never go to Sea World, and after you see this, you won't want to, either.

5. You're Next- Another horror film, with a great script was this fun, bloody, and, at times, funny flick has a great plot and some lively characters, including our beautiful lead, Sharni Vison, who is the best final girl of the year. A kick ass climax and killer ending makes this an even more pleasant viewing experience. It also ranks alongside the best home-invasion horror films ever made. A must see!

4. Kick-Ass 2- Fun, fast paced, and bloody action sequel, may not be as great as the original, but it's a solid film, nonetheless, and, by far, the sequel of the year. I had such a blast watching this laughing, getting all pumped up, saying oh shit, that it just ended up being one of the most fun moving going experiences of the year, for me. Also, Hit Girl still rules. Just saying.

3. The Conjuring- THE scariest film of the year! Nothing comes close to this chilling and terrifying horror tale that is without a shadow of a doubt one of the best haunted house films ever made. James Wan has made his masterpiece. Also, I am in insanely love with the gorgeous Vera Farmiga. Hey, just being honest!






2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- A darker and more mature sequel, this one has a far more finely tuned story. Filled with solid acting, excellent effects, and a strong script, it pushes it way out of the zone of garbage like the Twilight films. This is a great superior installment that is quality sci-fi and great film-making all around. The gorgeous Jennifer Lawrence is Hollywood's best young actress. Despite the film's length I found myself swept into it's story and never feeling it. It's kind of lame they split this year's installment and finale into two films (I HATE this trend!), but so is the greed of Hollywood. Regardless, I plan to be seeing, hopefully with my friend Kristie, as soon as we can!

1. American Mary- What more can I say about a film, I have savagely worshiped since I first saw it two years ago? The absolute best movie of the year is one of the very best horror films in ages. A true modern classic from the modern masters of the genre, the Twisted Twins: Jen and Sylvia Soska!

Monster-Mania 3/9/13

Although for many years I had heard and known of the Monster-Mania horror convention, I had never actually gone to one. It wasn't for lack of trying or wanting, either. But, in the end it was always so far away. While, it is in New Jersey, Cherry Hill to be precise, it's closer to Phillie. So much so that the train goes to Phillie then you gotta take a train to go back to Jersey. It's a long ride that none of us ever wanted to do. Until, that is, my friend Freddie mentioned that we should go. And, so finally this past Saturday we did. While, both he and Pat (one of my other friends that went with us) had gone before, for me this was my first time at the show. But, I had a blast!

Now, I gotta say the guest list was impressive from the get go. It was packed with fans, as a result. This in particular was due to having so much of The Walking Dead cast. The lines for said guests were INSANE! Especially for Michael Rooker, even more for Laurie "Andrea" Holden, and even more than that for Danai "Michonne" Guiria. The prices were for them were high, too. Rooker, who back in the day charged only 20 at Chiller, was charging 40! Michonne is known to have a rabid following so her line was a given that it would be long. So much so that she had her room, upstairs!

 

Despite playing one of the most hated characters on the show, Holden had what was probably the second biggest line, at the show.

 

Back when I met Rooker at Chiller, he was the life of the party. He was drinking and had all the girls around him. This time around he didn't hang with the fans after the show. Perhaps, he is too popular, now?

Anyway, I didn't bother meeting any of the cast. Not at those prices or those lines, I kind of figured they would be bad. Anyway, I did meet other celebs:

The main one I wanted to was Katharine Isabelle. Now, I had been a fan of this Canadian beauty since the Ginger Snaps Trilogy (the first two installments are favorites of mine) and enjoyed her in Freddy Vs. Jason, but it was her turn in the amazing American Mary that really sold me as a fan of hers. Since, I had contacted the Soska twins that I was meeting her, they told me to say, "Hi" to her. 

When I relayed that message to her, she told me to tell them that she "loved them". I asked her if she ever saw the their first movie of theirs, the fun Dead Hooker in a Trunk. She told me that they had made her watch it before doing Mary. They feared she wouldn't wanna work with them after viewing it. It turned out she loved it. And, how could she not? It's such a fun flick! Next up was the very sexy Janina Gavankar. Now, I been a fan of hers since she first appeared on True Blood. She's great on that show as a shape-shifter and, best of all, frequently nude. She's also awesome on Arrow, where she plays a cop. Sadly, though, she ain't naked on that one. Anyway, I got her to sign my copy of True Blood season 4 on blu-ray. She was charging 30 bucks for an autograph, plus 10 for a pic with her. Oh and no candids. I was taken by her hotness, and the memory of her boobs, so I gave her 40 bucks. Regardless, she is very pleasant in person. Also, she looks absolutely hot, more so in this Optimus Prime is my boyfriend tee.

While, I did meet the Misfits many years ago, at a Fangoria convention, I couldn't pass up the chance to meet them, again, for free autographs. Truth is the autograph was free, so long as you bought one of their 5 buck posters. You got an extra one for free. Eh, not bad really. Now, Dez had left for the day for a show, and only Jerry Only was there. But, let's be honest, he's the guy you think about when you think about the band. Only is always a nice guy. He was having lunch while signing for fans. It just further cements them as my all time fav punk band, even if the current album ain't my cup of blood. 

The dude in front of me on line got a coffin case for a guitar, which Jerry drew on and signed. See how cool he is!

Now, those are the only celebs that I met and got their autographs. That isn't to say I didn't meet anyone else, though. After, the show was over, our little gang went to get lunch. We came back and hung around at the bar. There I met Lew Temple. He played one of the funniest characters on The Walking Dead. He's quite the nice guy in person. As, he posed for pics with every fan who came up to him, and he even did an interview at the bar for someone! A cool guy all around.

There was quite a bit of cosply, more than likely due to the fact that there was a costume contest. We didn't attend said contest, cause our friend Matt, who joined us at night, didn't have a ticket. Actually, had we known Pat would surely have bought Dr. Satan, and I would've bought my cosplay, that I'm doing now, that of everyone's favorite cinematic pyschotic pig: Officer Matt Cordell, the Maniac Cop (the version from the first film). Anyway, here are the cosplays I took pics of:

Apparently the Empire is now hiring hot women as Stormtroopers. You can never charge the Empire with being sexist!

Over at the FEARnet table the killer from Tobe Hooper's Toolbox Murders, Harry Warden from My Bloody Valentine, and Cropsey from The Burning were hanging out.

Not a cosplayer, but rather a dummy, Crypt Keeper was at the table, too. John Kassir, who did his voice, was signing inside. My friend Freddie met him. Kassir's a really cool guy, actually. 

And, that's it. I would definitely come back to Monster-Mania, in the future. It's got a more relaxed feel than Chiller, probably due to the fact that while people hang at the bar, there is no actual party. But, that's fine. And, it makes up for the fact that I will likely not be at the actual Chiller con in April. Why? Cause, it's a week after Exxxotica AC, which I will be at. There, you will find my crew and I covering the event.
