Thomas Haley's Timely Directorial Debut BREAKDOWN, Featuring Jessica Cameron, Releases!

Thomas Haley's directorial feature film debut Breakdown has released world wide on digital platforms from AVAIL Entertainment, with a dvd release set for 1st Quarter 2021. It also marks the feature film debut for his production company H2 Crew Productions.

Breakdown is Thomas Haley’s passion project and has been in the works for a few years. It’s release is well timed given the current pandemic which share similarities with the film’s grim reality. After a mysterious virus has wiped out much of the worlds population, with the remaining sick being corralled in quarantine zones, as one man fights to find a cure to save humanity, and himself.

Breakdown is directed and stars Thomas Haley in his most intense role released to date, carrying much of the film’s heavy themes. He is surrounded by a stellar supporting cast including rising scream queen Brooklyn Haley (Paranormal Attraction, Camp Twilight, Slice and Dice), Corey Sorenson (Chicago Fire, Patchwork, Palo Alto), Jessica Cameron (Truth or Dare, Silent Night, All Through The House) and John Marrott (Envy, Desert Moon).

The Film has been described as a cross between “I am Legend” and “Contagion” and was filmed with a skeleton crew and a strategically spent micro budget. When asked about the film Haley had these comments:

“Months were spent in preproduction planning out where the best use our resources would really make the biggest impact. Every shot was discussed with the team to make every angle look its best.  When CoVid Hit Los Angeles, It was crazy. We had no idea how much reality would actually imitate art. We had a completed project centered around a virus and I thought lets get this out because people are going through very similar conflicts as Tim Reynolds (our Lead Character in Breakdown) and that relatability may help people feel less alone during this real life pandemic.”

Breakdown was written by cinematographer Dan Jagels, who is a frequent collaborator with Haley, this is the 13th time have worked together. When asked about his inspiration for the script, Jagels said the following:

“I have always wondered and been fascinated by what it would really be like when something like a disease or natural disaster hits the world.  But not on a grand scale like most disaster or post apocalyptic movies, but for the individual.  The one man or woman that is trying to survive, that has perhaps already lost what he holds so dear.  Would this person in turn lose themselves?  Their sense of right and wrong?  Especially if others around him have gone to the dark side, so to speak. And no one is held accountable.  This film explores that idea.  One mans journey to do what is right, especially when everything has been lost or taken from him.”

THE DEVIL'S HONEY (Review)

Title: The Devil's Honey (AKA, Il Miele del Diavolo, Dangerous Obsession)
Director: Lucio Fulci
Writers:  Jaime Jesús Balcázar, Lucio Fulci, Ludovica Marineo
Cast: Brett Halsey, Corinne Cléry, Blanca Marsillach, Stefano Madia, Paula Molino, Bernard Seray
Min: 78
Year: 1986

Johnny (Stefano Madia) is a saxophone player on his way up. He has an obsessively kinky relationship with his gorgeous girlfriend Jessica (Blanca Marsillach). Early on the film we see him using his sax as a sexual stimulant, when he put up to her snatch while playing it. Very innovative, if I do say so myself! During one romp he fingers her on his motorcycle while he is driving. Unfortunately, they end up crashing, and he hits his head on a rock. He swears he is fine, though, even though that clearly hurt like a fucking bitch.
While, this is happening we meet Dr. Wendell Simpson (Brett Halsey) who is cheating on his classy wife, Carol (Corinne Cléry). She catches him having had sex with a hot hooker. She eventually confronts him, and they have an argument. She lets him know that she wants a divorce.
Johnny, in the meantime, passes out from the injury caused by the accident and is rushed to a hospital. The doctor that is set to operate on him is, low and behold, Dr. Simpson(!), who is distraught from his wife dumping his cheating ass. He fails to make any decisions during Johnny's emergency surgery, resulting in his death. Jessica rightfully blames the not so good doc, for her man croaking. She kidnaps the doctor and keeps him chained up. Between sexual gratification and humiliation and bodily violence on him, she sets out to have her revenge. Even though Johnny himself was far, far from the ideal boyfriend...

The Devil's Honey is a rarely seen movie directed and co-written by horror and gore master Lucio Fulci. Although, it is very far from his usual movies filled with splatter and zombies, his entry into the erotic thriller ranks among his finer works. It may lack the graphic violence that he is known for, but it is righteously raunchy in its own matter. Long unavailable in the US, especially uncut, The Devil's Honey was bought to us stateside, thanks to the fine folks at Severin Films in a solid Blu-ray release this year.
Unlike many supposedly erotic movies, especially those made state-side, this one delivers the bonerific goods. Aside from aforementioned sax and motorcycle fun, there is a hooker who paints her see-through stalkings with nail polish, right on her bush, as well as rampant nudity, including lots of glorious bush, bondage and domination with a heavy emphasis on sexual humiliation, and of course, lots of softcore sex. Of course, the women are all breathtakingly beautiful, as they tend to be in Italian genre cinema.
Not the typical Fulci movie, by any stretch of the phrase, but he goes for it with with full sleaze force. As, I said, the film is unquestionably sexy. I can say as this as a jaded viewer where it takes a lot for me too actually be turned on. Some stuff even managed to shock, especially in reference to the flashbacks to Johnny and Jessica's relationship.

The acting ranges from good to decent, and honestly any time it may not be up to snuff ,it's probably more of a result of the dubbing. Be sure to keep a look out for Fulci, himself, in a cameo, as a dude who sells our main couple some charmed bracelets.

The movie's pacing falters a little in the film's second act, only come back full force with the kinky torture filled third. A good ending that will leave you deciding what actually happens next, seals the deal on this torrid, naughty little movie.
The Devil's Honey is a sexy, raunchy, and, at times, shocking erotic thriller. As anything from the master Lucio Fulci, it pushes boundaries and is best not seen by prudes. The film remains a captivating and erotic feast, throughout, even if the middle part slows down a bit. With pretty good acting and strong directing from Fulci, it is impossible to not recommend this one, especially with the Severin Blu-ray, finally letting us see it, uncut, no less! Sleaze and Fulci lovers (some of which are probably one and the same!), take heed and see it now!

Split (Review)

Title: Split
Writer/ Director: M. Night Shymalan
Cast: James McAvoy, Betty Buckley, Anya Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson, Jessica Sula
Year: 2016
Min: 117

Three pretty, young girls are kidnapped. They wake-up in a room where they held by a man with 23 very distinct personalities (James McAvoy). His psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley) tries to unravel what is going on and find him and the girls, before it is too late. In the meantime, a 24th and truly terrifying personality is going to emerge from him known as The Beast!
Split is one of those movies that talking to much about its plot has the potential of ruining it. Hence, I'm keeping the synopsis short and sweet. You don't need to know anymore about it beyond what I just said. Nor should you, to fully enjoy the movie. So, let's jump right into the review.
M. Night Shymalan is a director who started out great, then somewhere along the way, he got lost and gave us some utter shit. It seemed that all hope was lost until 2015's surprisingly good found footage horror flick, The Visit. Split continues that return to solid film-making, by surpassing that film and becoming the director's finest film since The Sixth Sense (yes, I think it is even better than Unbreakable or Signs).
Shymalan is always at his best when he tells small, quiet horror stories. And, that is exactly what this is. He builds up tension quite well. There are some genuinely creepy and suspenseful moments, particularly at the film's exciting, white knuckle climax. It's a wee bit slow at times and maybe a teensy bit overlong. Also, at times it gets drowned in too many metaphysical ideas and exposition. But, the pay-off is great, not just in the climax, but in the cool twist ending. Yes, there is a twist, but I loved it and got a real kick out of it.
The cast is all quite good, from top to bottom. But, it's James McAvoy who really shines here. He is flawless at playng essentially multiple characters. At times, he can be downright scary as fuck. In fact, it's one of the finest antagonist performances in the genre, in recent memory. Also, worthy of praise is Anya Taylor-Joy (who I thought was one of the few things truly memorable aspects from the overrated The Witch). She's great in her role, as one of the kidnapped girls, Casey Cooke, a withdrawn one with a dark past of her own. Between those two movies and Morgan, this lovely and talented actress is making a name for herself within the genre.
Split is Shymalan's second best movie. It's an entertaining and, at times, suspenseful horror/ thriller that features a tense climax and a cool twist ending. It is further strengthened by good acting, in particular a star turn by McAvoy. While, it has flaws that keep it from reaching that next level of quality, it's still a movie I can wholeheartedly reccomened. Between, this and The Visit it's great to see Shymalan back to what he is best at. Let's just hope he stays on this path.

P2 (Review)

Title: P2
Director: Franck Khalfoun
Writers: Franck Khalfoun, Alexandre Aja, Gregory Levasseur
Cast: Wes Bentley, Rachel Nichols, Simon Reyonlds, Philip Akin
Year: 2007
Min: 98

It is Christmas Eve and Angela (Rachel Nichols), a young and beautiful business woman working in Manhattan, NY, is ready to head to her family's house for the holidays She soon realizes that her car isn't working and had to ask the parking attendant, Thomas (Wes Bentley), for some help. Unfortunately, nothing seems to be going her way. She is trapped inside the parking garage with and by Thomas who has a sick obsession with her. His violent, psychotic behavior terrifies her, and this Christmas Eve becomes a fight to escape with her life.
P2 is slow building and nail-biting, suspenseful, horror/ thriller. This sometimes overlooked movie really ranks among the best of the Christmas horror movies. Though simple in its structure and nature, it succeed thanks to tense directing and excellent acting.
Co-writer and director Franck Khalfoun slowly but surely builds on the tension. The movie increasingly keeps you on the edge, as it builds to the exciting and rousing climax. The use of the holiday of Christmas is great because it adds to making her ordeal of being trapped by him alone very real and believable. This is upped by choosing the parking garage as the setting of the film, which can be by their very nature desolate and creepy. That being said, we New Yorkers will wonder why she drives to work and not takes public transportation. In fact, this movie reaffirms my desire to never drive to the city!
While, there is not a huge body count, it is very violent and bloody. The first kill in particular is gruesome and realistic looking, thank to the excellent make-up FX. The movie's gruesome violence helps to raise the stakes and me it more shocking and white-knuckle experience.
Besides the nerve-shredding directing and excellent setting, the other true highlight is the acting. For the most part, the movie is a two person movie. And, you need excellent acting for this to truly work. Thank goodness then that both Wes Bentley and Rachel Nichols deliver this in droves. Bently is terrifying and creepy as fuck. On the drop of the dime he can realistically go from sweet to dangerously angry and threatening. But, even when he is being "nice" there remains an air of total creepiness. It's my favorite role of his.
Just like the role of Angela is my favorite of Rachel Nichols. In fact, she is one of my favorite final girls ever. Nichols plays her so believably and strongly that we cheer her on. She is vulnerable with the right amount of toughness; a good person caught in nightmarish situation. Of course, Nichols is absolutely gorgeous. I recently added the to this site's Horror Crushes, as she is most certainly a horror crush of anyone who sees this movie. And, let's call a spade a spade, she has some of the greatest cleavage that you will ever see in a horror flick. Both Nichols and Bentley pay so well of each other and have a great protagonist/ antagonist relationship that really drives the movie to the stratosphere.
P2 is a Christmas holiday season viewing tradition of mine for good reason. I've loved this movie since I first saw it as a blind buy when it first hit DVD. Suspenseful, violent, and with two superlative leads; it's a movie that deserves to be seated next to other holiday fear classics. If you have never seen it, you need to change that right fuckin now! And, if you have watched this nerve-shredder, watch it again. You need to make P2 part of your holiday viewing traditions as well. In all P2 holds an excellent level of holiday fear and tension.

3 Quickie Horror Reviews for 8/10/15

It's been a year since I did one of these multi and mini horror review posts. With me having watched a couple of genre films for the first time, this felt like the right time to do so.

ALL REVIEWS OUT OF 4 STARS

Don't Look Now- This wonderfully acted, expertly directed horror flick from director Nicolas Roeg tells the tale of a couple grieving over the accidental death of their daughter. The wife (the lovely Julie Christie) talks with two sisters, one them blind and psychic who says the daughter talks to her. The hubby (Donald Sutherland) does not believe in such things. But, he is haunted by visions of a girl in a red raincoat hood similar to the one their daughter died. All in the meantime, in Venice, Italy (where the couple now resides) someone is murdering women.
The acting is amazing and Roeg spins a compelling story with some of the finest editing in any film. The ending is one of the finest in the history of horror. Quite horror at it's very best and most stylish.

Though, I heard about this classic movie before, I had never seen it until I blind bought the excellent Criterion blu-ray. This gets my highest possible recommendation and is rightfully recognized as one of the best British horror movies ever made.
****

C.H.U.D.- Flesh-eating mutants who come out of manholes and live in the NYC sewers and kill people. A cop (Christopher Curry) and a dude (Daniel Stern of Home Alone fame) who runs a soup-kitchen team up to discover what the fuck is going on and ultimately stop the monsters.
A state coverup of toxic waste and radiation adds a nice layer socio-commentary to a fun monster movie that doesn't take itself to seriously. It's got a great cast (including a cameo by John Goodman!). Stern is particularly good delivering the best lines.
This cult favorite moves at a good pace and the FX while not the greatest are still cool and fun a sort B-movie of way. In fact it feels like a 50s B-movie meets an 80s gore flick by way of old-school NYC.

Note, the DVD version is supposedly the real and preferred cut of the film, but I saw the R-rated theatrical cut on El Rey. Either way if you like I have made the mistake of never seeing the movie that has become a cult favorite and even mentioned on The Simpsons and The Flash, as it's acronym meaning- Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellars, you need to change that and see it now!
***1/2

The Gift- Blumhouse moves away from their usual teen horror ghost flicks, for this mature thriller about a couple (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall) who run into an old high school acquaintance (Joel Edgerton who also directed it) of the hubby. He begins to give them gifts and visit them, but hubby is creeped out by him. Meanwhile, we learn that something happened between the two guys in high school. And, now it's coming back to haunt hubby.
A slow buildup of tension is expertly handled by Edgerton who really comes up with some nailbiting moments. Not a horror movie, but more intense than most released this year, The Gift is the finest thriller of the year. The acting is excellent here, with very complex characters. The gorgeous Hall provides us with the moral center and heart of the movie. And, then there is that ending!
You need to see this one before anyone ruins it for you!

In Support of Christy Mack & In Memory of Robin Williams

In the course of one day, two stories dominated my Facebook and Twitter feed: what happened to beautiful porn star Christy Mack and the death of beloved comedian Robin Williams. Both were tragic, albeit in different manners. But, they both touch upon two greater, even if very different, subjects: domestic violence and depression/ suicide.

Christy was allegedly beaten to a pulp by her ex, MMA fighter War Machine. She has 18 broken bones and a ruptured liver. I first saw the horrific pictures on Instagram. I was disgusted by them. If there is one thing that sickens me to the core, it is guys who hit women. It's a cowardly thing to do and utterly reprehensible. Also, sickening is the comments I have seen online with people making jokes or siding with him. These people are just as cowardly and disgusting, hiding behind their computers. Fuck their punk-bitch asses! No one deserves a beating like this, not a porn star, not anyone.

Below is her account/ official release, and the aforementioned, horrific pics:

"At about 2 a.m. Friday morning, Jon Koppenhaver arrived announced to my home in Las Vegas, NV. After he broke up with me in May, he moved out of my house and back to San Diego. When he arrived, he found myself and one other fully clothed and unarmed in the house. Without a single word spoken, he began beating my friend; once he was finished, he sent my friend away and turned his attention to me. He made me undress and shower in front of him then dragged me out and beat my face. I have no recollection of how many times i was hit. I just know the injuries that resulted from my beating. My injuries include 18 broken bones around my eyes, my nose is broken in 2 places. I am missing teeth and several more are broken. I am unable to chew, or see out of my left eye. My speech is slurred from my swelling and lack of teeth. I have a fractured rib and severely ruptured liver from a kick to my side. My leg is so badly injured, I have not been able to walk on my own. I also attained several lesions from a knife he got from my kitchen. He pushed the knife into me in some areas including my hand, ear and head. He also sawed much of my hair off with his dull knife.
After some time, the knife broke off of the handle and continued to threaten me with the blade. I believed I was going to die. He has beaten me many times before, but never this badly. He took my phone and cancelled all of my plans for the following week to make sure no one would worry about my whereabouts. He told me he was going to rape me, but was disappointed in himself when he couldn't get hard. After another hit or two, he left me on the floor bleeding and shaking, holding my side from the pain of my rib. He left the room and went to the kitchen where I could hear him ruffling through my drawers. Assuming he was finding a sharper, more stable knife to end my life, I ran out the back door, shutting it behind me so the dogs did not run inside to tip him off. I hopped the fence to the gold course behind my house and ran into a neighboring house. naked and afraid he would catch me, I kept running through the neighborhood running through the doors. Finally, one answered and I was brought to the hospital and treated for my injuries.
I would like to thank everyone for their support through this rough time. I am healing fast and well, and I appreciate a lot of the prayers and visits I have received over the past few days. After many months of fear and pressure to keep this man happy, although I fear for my life, I feel that I can no longer put myself in this situation. The cheating by him nearly everyday, and almost weekly abuse, is now more than I can stand. There is a $10k reward for the capture of Jonathan Koppenhaver at this time. Please report any information to your local police.
Thank you.

- Christy Mack

Beaten, stabbed, attempted rape. This reads like a real life horror film. It is certainly not the fun stuff, I usually cover. But, it's important to talk about however unpleasant it maybe. Vegas PD are still on the hunt for him. There is a $10,000 reward for his capture. And, now I hear that Dog the Bounty Hunter is looking for his ass.
He left this tweet on his Twitter account:
.@WarMachine170 better 2Give All You Excuses To The Judge ..you got 24 hrs to turn your self in or I am Coming After YOU.!

If you see him, please call the local authorities. This is War Machine to the right, above.

Later that day, we all got the horrible news that Robin Williams had passed away. It is suspected to be suicide via asphyxiation. He was 63.

His wife, Susan Schneider, released the following statement: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings.” She added: “As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Robin Williams is connected to one of my earliest memories as a child. When, I was very little my mother used to take me to the movies, a lot. One of the first, if not the first, we ever saw was the live action Popeye, where he played the title role. I still remember sitting in the movie and enjoying the movie's climax. Funny what stays with you all these years later. He was primarily known for his comedies. While, I am not a fan usually of comedies there is no denying he was in some very funny ones, including one his best known and loved, Mrs. Doubtfire. He also did the voice for the Genie in Disney's Aladdin.

But, my favorite movie of his was one where he took a chance and played a completely different role. That of the disturbed man in the horror/ thriller One Hour Photo. A personal favorite of mine, it showed that Williams could play a very complicated role in a deeply chilling and disturbing film. I absolutely fell in love with this film after seeing it in the movies.

It is being said that Williams had been battling a deep depression. I think this made it hit even harder on me. I, myself, have battled depression since high school, and admit to be going through a hard stretch right now. I also have learned that many people do not understand depression. It should be noted that suffering from it is not about being sad or even feeling "depressed". It's something much deeper, bigger, and all encompassing. If one positive thing came out from this tragic ordeal is I saw people posting about depression and suicide on Twitter and Facebook. I hope that people can at least try to understand this killer.  Because that is what depression is: a killer, both literally and figuratively.

If you know someone who suffers from it, please lend them a ear and be there for them. That's all we sometimes want, someone to hear us. And, if you are feeling suicidal get the help you need. You can contact the National Suicide Prevention here: www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/

Robin Williams, thank you for all the laughter you bought the world; it is oh so much sadder without you. May you RIP and God bless.

Random Thoughts & Words on The Roomate

OK, if your looking for a review of The Roomate, I suggest you look elsewhere. Since, I have have no real desire to see that shit. But, if you wanna know why I feel that way, well, then read on friends and readers!

First and foremost, I remember when this film was called Single White Female and starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. You know G4's Attack of the Show covered The Roomate, and well, the thing is a good part of their audience is in their mid 20s to their 30s. But, not one person on that freaking show mentioned that fact this clearly a rip-off of that Fonda/ Liegh movie. I don't kiss this flick's ass, so I'll just flat out say it! Anyways, I'm sure that section of AOTS' audience saw that movie, and already said the fact that Roomate is a rip-off to themselves (or on Twitter which where I saw other bring that fact up). But, this movie is rated PG-13, so it's made with a younger audience in mind. Which leads me to problem number 2.

OK, so with this rating it means no graphic violence or nudity. Which in my book is an epic fail. Worse, because both of the female leads are hot. Minka Kelly and Lieghton Meester are so fucking yummy!!! But, they won't show shit, so... By the way, I don't think Ms. Kelly is in a cheerleader outfit in this movie, but she looks good in it, so I posted it regardless (I'm sure you are not complaining...) And, speaking of Lieghton Meester...

Who the fuck wouldn't wanna be stalked by Leighton? Seriously, I've had some stalkers of my own. They all fucking suck. But, if they looked like her it would be quite nice! By the way, must she star in shit that I hate or don't watch? Her movies are nothing I ever wanna see, ditto for Gossip Girl. But, Meester was in an enjoyable direct-to-vid horror flick, I'm sure she would rather not mention. Or, maybe she does. At least she should. It's called Drive-Thru. She plays the female lead. In it, a serial killer clown named Horny the Clown (no I am NOT making that up), kills people at a fast food joint called Hellaburger. He cracks a lot of jokes (many of them the perverted kind, but hey his name is Horny, so...). Actually, it's good fun and gory. Nothing great, but easily my favorite thing Meester has been in that I have seen (or at least know of and hence avoided to see...).

Finally, there is one way this movie could have been worth seeing. Going back to the PG-13 rating; this should have been R-rated (or even better, unrated!!!), and in it Meester stalks Kelly. At first Kelly is freaked out, but then she gets into it. And, they preceed to have hot lesbo sex! Yep, that would've been great! But, it ain't happening, so fuck this shit. Go see Single White Female (which is a pretty good movie, but no masterpiece), Drive-Thru, or just watch a fucking' porno, for crissakes.
