MODEL HUNGER Signing at Forbidden Planet NYC 7/13/16

Yesterday, July 13, 2016, there was a signing for the DVD of the just released indie-horror flick Model Hunger at Forbidden Planet in NYC. The movie marks the directorial debut of scream queen legend, the lovely Debbie Rochon.

Among those present for the signing were: Aurelio Voltaire, Carmine Capobianco, Adam Torkel, James Morgart (the movie's writer and producer), Suzi Lorraine, Kaylee Williams, and, of course, Debbie, herself.  

 

It had been a while since I last saw Debbie, which coincidentally was at a signing in the same store (the one for the Fangoria book) a little over a year ago. But, it had been much longer since I last saw Suzi. That was way back at Saturday Nightmares in 2011 (!), where I actually got to do a little interview with her and Debbie, actually.

 

Anyway, I had a blast at the signing and look forward to seeing the movie, finally. I been meaning to do just that ever since I first heard about it. The movie also stars other legendary horror actresses in the form of Lynn Lowry and Tiffany Shepis. I'll review/ share my thoughts on it when I do. Below you will see my signed copy of it, as well as a signed copy of Delirium magazine (bought said mag online,via Full Moon's website, by the way). The issue features on article on this very movie, and Debbie signed it for me. This is an EXCELLENT mag, bought to you by Charles Band and has guys from Fango like Chris Alexander and Michael Gingold working on it.

Dark Funeral- Where Shadows Forever Reign (Album Review)

This mighty Swedish black metal machine is back with their sixth studio and their first album since 2009's Angelus Exuro pro Eternus. This is also their first album with their new vocalist Heljarmadr (formerly of Gra, Domgård, and Cursed 13). The result? Well, it is one of the absolute finest black metal albums of the year, thus far, and one of the very best of their long career.

The album opens with the blisteringly fast "Unchain My Soul", which is one of the very best tracks on it. A wonderfully dark opening leads to rhythmic and continuous assault on the senses in the lightning fast "Beast Above Man". My favorite track on the album has to be the purely evil and chilling "To Carve Another Wound". It's dark and driving as well worthy of you throwing up the metal horns. By the time the time the savagely fast title track closes off this masterpiece you will remember everything that made you fall in love with black metal and more.

Vocalist Heljarmadr is an incredible addition to the band. I love that his voice sounds raspy as hell (pun not intended), but you can clearly understand what he says. Which is great cause the lyrics are filled with images of evil and Satanic acts of horror and violence. The guitars by Chaq Mol and Lord Ahirman (who writes the lyrics and also plays the bass) sound great and add a chilling feel to the whole experience. Meanwhile, Dominator does just on the drums. He is a monster on his drum-set! Filled with insane blast beats and a full on attack this some of the best drumming in extreme metal this year.

The production on this is excellent and really fits the music. It adds to the cold, distant, and Satanic sound of it perfectly.

 Where Shadows Forever Reign is an album I simply cannot stop listening to. It's songs get stuck in my head, and feel the need to hear it again and again. And, the more I hear it, the more I like it! Everything about it is dark, violent, unquestionably evil, and filled to the brim with anger and seething with hate. Yet, like a really awesome horror movie, there is something really fun in here that makes it appealing to one's ears. The horned one must surely and rightfully be pleased with this killer album that is destined to make my top 10 of the year.

Necrot- The Labyrinth (Album Review)

Necrot are a death metal trio from Oakland, Cali. Their debut album The Labyrinth is a heavy and headbangingly good slab of good school flavored death.This eight track album is comprised of the songs from their three, extremely hard to find demos.

The vocals from signer/ bassist Luca Indrio are harsh and brutal to the extreme. They are accompanied by buzz-saw guitar work from Sonny Reinhardt and fast and pounding drums by Chad Gailey. 

The album opens up with the thundering "Consume Control" and from then on it never lets up. The dark and pounding title track is one of the best on this disc sounding like a combination of a brutal storm and machine-gun fire. "Cycles of Pain" is a savage lighting fast assault on the senses. While, "Rebirth In Chaos" might be the most appropriately titled song on the album as it is a true aural representation of chaos. The album closes off with the blistering "The Abyss".

The underground has been clamoring for these songs, and this album will sedate that need. It will also undoubtedly please fans in search of the old death metal days and bands like Bolthrower, old Morbid Angel, and early Sepultura.

Heroes and Villains NY 2016

Yesterday, July 2, 2016 (a Saturday), I attended Heroes and Villains Fan Fest NY held at the Meadowlands Expo Center in New Jersey. It was my first time attending this relatively new con. It was originally going to be held in Jan, but alas there was a snow storm (I wasn't in the east coast, as you loyal readers may know I was in Vegas for AEE) and had to be canceled.

Anyways, though smaller in size to other cons, this autographed driven event was still a lot of fun. There were lots of celebrities on hand signing autographs and posing for pics with fans, as well as doing panels. All of them were from popular superhero shows like Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, etc.

The above two is from the Arrow panel. If you are wondering where Steven Amell is, well he had his own panel with his opponent from last year's edition of WWE Summerslam Cody Rhodes, AKA Stardust (below).

I only got on line to meet one celebrity and that was the absolutely gorgeous Katrina Law. Law plays my favorite character in the entire DC TV Universe, Nyssa al Ghoul. She irst appeared on Arrow as the daughter of Raas al Ghoul and the lover of Caity Lotz' Sara Lance, AKA the first Black Canary/ current White Canary. I actually told Law that she was my favorite, as she "is such a badass!" To which, she smiled and replied jokingly that she "just wakes up that way". We both laughed. She posed for two pics, something she did with all her fans. Her price for an autograph and pic was probably the best at the show, being a total of 50 (autograph 30, pic 30 if you didn't want both).

She was so sweet and down to earth and really took her time to talk each and all her fans. It was definitely worth the time and the price I paid. Plus, the pics I got with her were awesome! Law is just the sweetest in person!

A fan drew this beautiful drawing of her, that she graciously signed. She also, rightfully, sang the praises of his amazing talent.

I also got some cool swag, which you can see below. Aside from Law's autograph, they also included two Funko Pops: Punisher (Nemesis) and Travis Bickle of Martin Scorsese's classic Taxi Driver and four Funko Mystery Minis, which were no mystery cause I bought them out of the box. They were: the Predator, the Gill-Man from Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Alien Queen, and Spike from Joe Dante's classic Gremlins,

In all, Heroes and Villains was a lot of fun! I hope to be back for a future edition.
