The 10 Best Hard Rock/ Metal Songs to Listen to in a Blizzard

If you, like I, live in the East Coast, then you are seeing this shitty snow storm that we are getting.  With most transport dead or running really fucking bad, most of us are stuck inside. As much as this type of weather sucks, it has inspired some cool metal music. The following is a list of the 10 best songs to listen to in this awful snow. I kept it to one per band, otherwise, they would all be Immortal songs. Enjoy!

10. GWAR- "Pure as the Arctic Snow"- Hey, if your band's origin states that you come from the freezing world of Antarctica then you know you're gonna make this list! This is a fun, catchy, and punky little tune.
9. Autopsy- "In the Grip of Winter"- Slow, crunchy death metal song from these pioneering masters of the sub-genre. This one feels like blocks of ice that pelt your face hard, until your fucking skull caves in.
8. AC/DC- "Black Ice"- Actual black ice genuinely fucking sucks. This song, however, does not. A badass title track from this AC/DC album, it combines a great groove with ass kicking blues. The result is a great headbanger of a good time!

7. Trivium- "Silence in the Snow"- Melodic and catchy title track from the most recent Trivium album has the usual phenomenal musicianship this band is known for. Cool video, too!

6. Betray The Martyrs- ''Let It Go''- Totally ass kicking, metalcore cover of the most popular song off of the overrated Disney flick Frozen. Betray The Martyrs makes you want to get into the pit with this or possibly mosh in the snow.
Added bonus: If you moshed in the snow right now, there would probably be no one to think you are insane for doing so! Go do that shit, right now!
5. Dissection- "Frozen''- This song from black metal masters Dissection feels bitterly cold and distant. It bleeds a dark, evil, and lonely feel with melodic-ism and heaviness.
4. Accept- "Winter Dreams"- Arguably the most beautiful song on here, this underrated Accept ballad has a haunting and heart and soul felt feel that makes it one of the best tracks to listen on a frozen, winter night.
3. Metallica- "Trapped Under Ice"- From Metallica's second, and second best, album comes this lightning (pun not intended) fast all out assault on senses. This thrash metal classic almost topped this list, but honestly only two other bands could have done that.

2. Abbath- "Winter Bane"- When former Immortal frontman Abbath had his solo project you knew that there would be some songs about the cold and snow. This single off of the self-titled debut album highlights all that is awesome about one of last year's best albums. Thundering yet catchy black metal at it's fucking best and coldest!

1. Immortal- "In My Kingdom Cold''- Oh come on, you knew an Immortal song would be number one! Or at least you should've known! It was just a matter of which song from one of the best black metal bands ever would be chosen. In the end, I picked this blast(beat) of cold air. This IS the definitive blizzard/ snow storm/ winter nor'easter song!

What songs would add to this list? And, to those of you stuck in this craptastic weather, stay warm, safe, and metal!

Accept & Kreator Live in NYC- 9/7/12

This past Friday I had the pleasure of attending a awesome night of German metal, as Accept and Kreator rocked the fucking house at the Best Buy Theater in NYC!! I got there just in the nick of time, as Accept was just about to come on! From the get go they ripped onstage with killer music! They opened with my favorite song, "Hunt, Drawn, and Quartered" from their awesome new album, Stalingrad. From there on they played the title track, stuff from their modern classic album Blood of Nations (including the AWESOME Teutonic Terror), as well as classic, old school songs, including a song they didn't play when I saw them last year, my all time favorite Accept track, "Princess of the Dawn"!! As always they closed off the set with their most known song the classic "Balls to the Walls"!

Closing the night was the greatest German thrash band, EVER, in the form of the mighty Kreator!!! They are, quite simply, one of the best live acts I have ever seen. They fuckin destroyed from the first to very last song. And, the band has so much energy onstage!!! Believe me when I say they sound as good live, if not better, than they do their albums. They played a truly KILLER set with songs from the excellent new album (which I think is their best in years, and that is saying A LOT!), Phantom Antichrist, that included the kick title track and United in Hate, as well as songs from various albums of their careers like vicious Hordes of Chaos, People of the Lie (a personal fav of mine!), Voices of the Dead, and they even went real old school and played a face ripping Pleasure to Kill. One of the true highlights for me, was when they said what a honor it was to play with their heroes Accept!! Meanwhile, the mosh pit was fucking sick!! They closed the night off with classic Flag of Hate.

Waving the FLAG OF HATE!!!!

In all, it was an awesome fucking night and a killer, kick ass show!!

The Top 10 Metal Albums of 2010

10. Triptycon: Eparistera Daimones- While, Celtic Frost maybe done, lead metal-master Tom Warrior continued on with this debut album from his newest exercise in extreme metal. A perfect follow-up to the last Frost album, this one is a darkly glorious mix of doom and black metal, that stands as a slow, heavy, and gloomy musical exertion.

9. Watain: Lawless Darkness- Man, when it comes to straight-out brutal, pissed-off, anti-Christian black metal few bands can top the out-right viciousness and glorious evil of Watain. And, while their two albums before this are great, it's this one that reigns in as their satanic masterpiece. Heavy and head-ripping this album only get better with each listening. The final song is a long complex track, but every song is heavy and crushing. Without a shadow of doubt, Watain are on the way to become one of the true masters of the blackest of the musical arts.

8. Ov Hell: The Underworld Regime- While, the latest Dimmu Borgir is mostly mediocre and forgettable, this side project by lead signer Shagrath and Gorgorth bassist King Ov Hell fucking kills! Dark, evil, and heavy this is everything that Dimmu ain't right now. With songs dealing with evil and horror, this ranks as one of black metal's best and still undiscovered, by some. I hope they make more albums, cause Ov hell fucking rules!!!

7. Avenged Sevenfold: Nightmare- While, I don't think this is the album of the year, as Revolver picked to be, it is the seventh best of the year. It's also A7X's best work, to date. To come from the tragedy of the death of the Rev, and make such a heavy and angry album is understandable. What is amazing is just how good it is. The opening title track and God Hates Us rip and kill. As always, the band is one of the single most technically sounding bands to achieve mainstream success in many a moon. It also might have the year's best album cover!

6. Overkill: Ironbound- Many times overlooked or underrated (in particular by those on the westcoast), these New Jersey thrash gods have made their best album in years. It's heavy, fast, and kick ass. While, many a list will stupidly not mention it, I gladly throw the devil horns up for them and rank 'em in at #6!

5. Accept: Blood of the Nations- Here is the year's biggest surprise as well as the year's best come back. I never would have thought that a new Accept album, much less with a new signer (he formerly of T.T. Quick), would be so fucking AMAZING! It's heavy and ass kicking and even the ballad works. Shit, he might even be a better signer than the original dude. If you ain't got this yet, you are seriously missing out!!!

4. Dark Tranquillity: We Are the Void- Also an underrated band (and this list seems to have it's fair share of that), this is yet another killer album from one of melodic death metal's best acts. Featuring amazing guitar work, this is just light years of what many bands in the sub-genre are doing. I also happen to be a huge fan of the vocals on this band.

3. Fear Factory: Mechanize- After two mostly forgettable albums the masters of industrial, with tinges of death, metal are back! In fact, this is one of their best albums ever! It's totally brutal, yet completely listenable. As a huge fan of them, I am overjoyed that they are back motherfuckers!!!!

2. Deftones: Diamond Eyes- Much like FF, the Deftones last album was, well, largely forgettable. But, Diamond Eyes is a masterpiece. In fact, also like FF, it's their best in years. At times rocking, at others soft, but always captivating this a beautiful sounding alt-metal trip. The song playing and signing are their peak, and it makes for an album that is more and more listenable each and every time you play it.

1. Sigh: Scenes from Hell- Black metal's most original act have given us not only THE best release of the year (and, I have to say picking the top release this year was NOT easy), but also the most original sounding. In fact, I would say no band sounds anything like they do. And, it is in their refinement (and not just of black metal, but metal in general), that this band succeeds, greatly. The use of horns and the fast, heavy, melodic music is beautiful and haunting. This is art, man, and my favorite album of 2010. And, their, so far, crowning masterpiece.

Honorable mentions:
Disturbed- Asylum
Death Angel- Relentless Retribution
