Kick-Ass 2

Title: Kick-Ass2
Writer/ director: Jeff Wadlow
Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Mortez, Morris Chestnut, Claudia Lee, Amy Anzel, Clarke Duke
Min: 103

Following the incidents of the first film, Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Mortez) continues to fight crime, while
Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is being trained by her to be a better superhero. Hit-Girl, AKA Mindy Macready, is being taken care of by her dad's former partner and friend, Detective Marcus Williams (Morris Chestnut). He eventually catches up to her sneaking out and crime-fighting ways and makes her swear to stop. Meanwhile, Kick-Ass continues to look for fellow superheroes and finds one lead by a former mob hit-man turned hero named Col. Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey). At the same time his former friend, Chris D'Amico swears revenge for Kick-Ass killing his dad in the first movie via a bazooka. He becomes the Mother-Fucker and forms his own team of psychotic super-villains, determined to raise hell, destroy everything Kick-Ass loves, and, ultimately, kill him.

My God, did this movie ever kick some serious, well, ass! It is that rarest of sequel, the one that tops it's great first installment. One of the main reasons is just what a great time it is to be had. It's fast
paced, exciting, extremely funny, and has lots of gory violence. There are lots of unpc jokes that include racism, shit, attempted rape, and masturbation. Add the aforementioned graphic violence, that includes: amputation, impaling, stabbings, death by law-mower, head shots, bloody squibs and more, and this one wears it's R-rating proud as fuck! There is one scene where villainess Mother Russia (Olga Kurklina) slaughters a bunch of cops that is THE definitive mass cop slaughter scene done on the outside in movie history!

Hit-Girl still fucking rules! It's still a blast to see a young girl fight and kill, all while using the worst language, ever. Mortez is an amazing actress and the development of her character and struggle to find her real self, IE: is she a regular teen girl or a killer vigilante, gives her the chance to stretch her acting ability. The movie also gives Taylor-Johnson a chance to grow as Kick-Ass. He is given a lot more depth here and covers a range of emotions. The rest of the supporting cast all give nice performances, as well. Even Jim Carrey is great in this, and I usually cannot stand him!

Fans of hotties should be happy that frequent horror actress (Dawn of the Dead [remake], Cry Wolf,
Wrong Turn) Lindy Booth plays the sexy as fuck superheroine Night Bitch. She has one hell of a body! Here is hoping some hotties start doing this as a cosplay at comic cons! Also, it was nice to see Lindsey Fonseca return in her role for a quick, but funny and awesome, cameo.

The excellent script goes beyond the humor, action, and gore by giving the film a sense of depth that answers what it is to be a real life superhero. It also deals with family and who is the real person behind a hero's mask. But, this is never heavy handed and never slows or hurts the movie. In fact, as I just stated, it strengths it.

Ending with one hell of a climax and a cool ending, Kick-Ass 2 (based on the comic-book of the same name) is a straight shot of pure fuckin adrenaline! I left the movie theater feeling all pumped up and ready to whoop some ass of my own!! This is the best superhero movie, so far of 2013, topping Man of Steel, The Wolverine, and even the awesome Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. When this movie hits theaters this Friday, you need to see it as soon as you can!! Highest possible recommendation!!

The Top 10 Films of 1972

Before getting to this list, I know what you are thinking, "Boy, that is a very random year for the Master to pick and do a top ten list. It came out of nowhere." Well yes, I get that, but it really didn't. Over on my personal Facebook profile, my friend Jim, who runs the awesome blog Shootin' Straighter than a Stormtrooper (which you should totally be reading and following) assigned a year for me to pick my top ten form after I liked his own list.

And, thus this little post was given birth. After, I posted the list on my above mentioned profile, as my status update, I decided to write it out and make into an actual write-up here. I'm a huge fan of 70s cinema, since during this time, they pushed the limits of what could be done in terms of sex and violence. There will never be another period in cinema quite like the 70s. Anyway, 1972 was a really good year and as always, it's my list, so I don't think too many sites will have a list quite like it. Enjoy!

10. Godzilla Vs. Gigan- Introducing one of my favorite Godzilla villains, Gigan, and teaming him up with my favorite one, Ghidorah, to battle the Big G and his pal Anguirus, this installment has been one that I have loved since I was a little kid. Lots of fun, destruction, fighting, and monsters. And, really that's all you need in life!

9. Tombs of the Blind Dead- This Euor-horror cult classic introduced one of the coolest looking horror villain groups ever in the form of the living dead Knights Templar. These blind, horse-riding zombies hear their victims and that's how they find them to kill them. The movie bookends itself awesomely with a hot lesbian tryst at the beginning and a kick ass slaughter on a train at the climax! It spawned lots of sequels, but this arguably the best installment in the series.

8. Rica- This kick ass, sexy, and violent entry in the pinky violence cycle has all the graphic violence and nudity you expect from this type of film. Moving in at a quick pace and featuring a gorgeous, nude female cast, this one of the most fun movies in the sub-genre.

 7. The Blood Spattered Bride- Cult classic, lesbian vampire flick has two stunning beauties in the lead and some good gore. I been a big fan of this one since I bought it on DVD ages ago. Well acted, beautiful to look at, bloody, and highly recommended.

6. The Last House on the Left- If not for the silly and unneeded humor, provided by the two stupid cops, I would like this disturbing and nasty Wes Craven rape-revenge classic even more. Regardless, this savage film ranks as one of his best films, with great acting by the villains and victims and a rousing, gory climax.

5. Deliverance- You can thank this movie for all the hillbilly horror flicks that came since its release. A film that could only be made in the 70s, this one has a legacy that never dies. "Squeal like a pig!"

4. Horror Express- One of the finest Spanish horror movies ever this sci-fi/ horror hybrid has long been a favorite of mine. It combines a cool concept, alien terror, zombies, a GREAT cast (Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and Telly Savalas), beautiful women, a cool monster, and a kick ass climax, if you have never seen this one you are doing yourself a disservice!

3. Don't Torture a Duckling- My second favorite Lucio Fulci film this giallo this an awesome story with solid acting and a smashing climax. The whipping scene with chains ranks among the master's best. Also, nice is the nudity in the film, as the picture to the left can attest to.

2. Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan- One of my absolute favorite martial arts movies this is probably the sexiest movie the Shaw Brothers ever made. Featuring hot lesbian action and two of the most stunning women you will ever see in the leads, this one will make your pants very happy. But the film also looks gorgeous and has some real kick ass karate and sword fighting, plus lots of bloody violence. The climax ranks among the best you will ever see in in this genre.

1. The Godfather- What more can be said of one of the greatest movies ever made? I seen it countless of times, owned it on VHS, LD, DVD, and now blu-ray. A cinematic masterpiece and a rare example of a perfect movie. Priceless!!!!

I hope you enjoyed reading my picks. What are your favorite movies from this year? And, is there a year that you would like to see me pick my top ten from? Please, be realistic when picking a year. Don't give me a year before 1970, as I haven't seen enough films from the preceding years to give a fair judgement. Don't get me wrong there are lots of movies I liked from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, but I would never consider myself an expert in those eras of film. Also the years 2009- present are covered here, so need to pick them.

The Wolverine

Title: The Wolverine
Director: James Mangold
Writer: Mark Bomback
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Hiryuki Sanada, Svtelana Khodchenkova, Brian Tee

Haunted by his killing of the love of his life Jean Grey (Famke Jansen) in X-Men 3 (actually I am haunted by that movie, too, but mostly cause of how shitty it was), Logan, AKA Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), has become a recluse. He has nightmares and is "visited" by her in his dreams (my dreams
with Famke would be considerably more X-rated). He has sworn to give up his violent ways, but when a pretty Japanese girl (Rila Fukushima) asks him to come with her to Japan to say good-bye to a man he saved (in a prologue flashback), he agrees. The man is now and dying, and he wants to take Logan's healing power away form him. That will thus free Logan of his suffering and by adding it to himself, will cure him of ailment.

Logan refuses, but the dying old guy's blonde mutant assistant, the Viper (Svtelana Khodchenkova) takes his healing power away, anyway. In the meantime, the old man dies and soon the Yakuza set their eyes on the old man's beautiful granddaughter Mariko (Tao Okamaoto). Logan finds himself protecting her and, of course, falling for her.

Let me begin by saying that this leaps and bounds over the mediocre and forgettable turd that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It's a direct sequel to the third X-Men, so yeah that movie really did happen. It sucked, and well we have to deal with that. That's fine though, cause the movie uses that tragic ending as a good way to add the depth of Logan. Wolverine is a great character, because he is so complex. His violent past and violent tendencies always weigh on him, and the movie knows how to do that right. Jackman is great as Wolvie, and so is the rest of the cast. Comic-book fans should know that Mariko is Logan's great love in the Far East. And, she is bought to exquisite beauty and life by Tao Okamoto, who is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen! Also a babe is Fukushima, and when she kicks ass, well, yum!!

Not as good is Khodchenkovan as the Viper. OK, actually that is unfair. She does what she can with the role, but my God is the character of the Viper shit on! Why call her the Viper if she won't be the sexy terrorist HUMAN villianess that she is in the comics?! Fuck you Hollywood!! You ruined another great comic-book character. God only knows if the Avengers will be able to use her in a future installment, now.

Also Hollywood seems to love stories where heroes lose their powers. Though unlike Superman 2 and Spider-Man 2, Wolverine doesn't give it up. It's taken from him. This actually adds nicely to the story cause it makes him vulnerable to attack. That adds to excitement of the action. And, said action scenes are fucking awesome! The movie moves at a nice clip, allowing for story but managing to get back to the ass kicking. There is as much violence as the PG-13 rating will allow these days by having it, mostly, off-screen. So, that there is some blood, and Wolvie kills lots of people, but it never goes into full blown R mode.

In the end this is a solid and very entertaining movie. I say it's the best live action superhero movie of the year, so far. Yes, it's better than either Man of Steel or Iron Man 3. And, by saying best live action, I mean to say that Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox DC animated movie is THE best superhero movie, overall, of the year. In comparison to the other X flicks, this one is the best one since the first two. And, yes that means that I think it is better than First Class. Those of you on the fence, should go see it. I'm sure you will get a kick out of it, and be sure to stick around the end credits for extra geeky coolness.

In Remembrance of Karen Black (1939-2013)

I was deeply saddened when I heard yesterday, August 8, 2013, that legendary actress Karen Black had passed away. Born on July 1, 1939, she died at age 74. She had lost her battle to cancer.

Black had appeared in such high profile and classic movies like Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces. But, it would be her work in horror films that win the hearts, love, and respect of genre fans the world over.

One of her most popular genre roles was in the classic TV anthology Trilogy of Terror where she battles the terrifying Zuni doll. Her involvement in this film lead its director, Dan Curtis, to hire her for his creepy haunted house movie, Burnt Offerings. She continued to appear in many horror films (as well as other genres), including, but not limited to, Tobe Hooper's godawful remake of Invaders from Mars, the sexy and underrated Night Angel where she gets seduced by it's beautiful antagonist Lilith (Isa Anderson), and Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering (do you really need me to tell you this one sucked?).
 Burnt Offerings
 Trilogy of Terror
Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering
 Invaders from Mars

But, it's her role as Mother Firefly in Rob Zombie's cult favorite House of 1000 Corpses, that remains my favorite role of hers and probably a favorite of many fans. She was great in that one! And, in the end, it just reaffirms how sad this all is. God bless her and may she RIP. And, as I always say: FUCK CANCER!
