The Sadness (Review)

In Taiwan, a young couple, Jim (Berant Zhu) and Kat (Regina Lei), have a minor argument about him working instead of going away with her as had been planned. On the TV news, a podcast is shown featuring Dr. Wong (Wei-Hua Lan), who warns that the current flu like Alvin virus is mutating and that the nation needs to quarantine. The host of said podcast scoffs at this stating that is all being done cause this is an election year. Before going to work Jim notices a blood covered old woman on a nearbay roof. Immediately there after, he talks to his neighbor Mr. Li (Ralf Chiu, here credited as Ralf Yen-Hslang Chiu) who thinks that the virus is a load of bullshit. 

But, of course, it ain't, and when Jim goes to a café all hell breaks loose. The old lady he saw on the roof viciously attacks the cook. Immediately after, bloody violence erupts. Meanwhile, on the train that Kat is on, murder and violence explodes as people begin to brutally attack and kill passengers Blood and viscera begins to fly, as a body count quickly rises. She helps a woman named Molly (Ying-Ru Chen) who has gotten stabbed in the eye. They both head to a hospital, and hope to be safe there. Kat tells Jim where she is. He heads to there to meetup with her, as they both try to survive the ever increasing acts of brutality and horrific violence that are happening around them. For you see, the virus is spreading quickly and creating more assaulting, murdering, and raping zombies.

The Sadness is a 2021 Taiwanese infected/ zombie/ hardcore splatter/ horror movie. It premiered in its homeland of Taiwan on January 22, 2021 and played a few festivals in the months that followed. The movie's extreme and boundary pushing ways quickly gained it a reputation, as gruesome and shocking. But, it has also been getting praise for the movie's inherit quality. 

Horror has always been indictive and responsive of the world around it. Look no further than the nuclear horror movies of the 1950's or the post 9/11 torture porn era. So then, it comes as no shock that the COVID pandemic era is seeing a rise (pun not intended) in infected horror, as also seen in the recent and well made Argentinian/ Uruguayan Virus-32 (currently streaming on Shudder). But, with The Sadness, we might have already hit our be all-end all of disease horror flicks.  

As would be expected the film is highly topical and its politics very contemporary. It's allegory to the corona virus and the attitudes of denial and political standings inherit with it are certainly blatant. But then, this movie is in your face in every fucking way. That its warranted and timely statements are all wrapped in a balls to the wall splatter movie reminds us that yes, you can make an extreme horror movie with something important to say. Its commentary is not just regulated to COVID, though, as one incredibly uncomfortable and realistic feeling scene involving a creepy businessman hitting on Kat showcases. 

One of the things that really makes the movie work are our two leads. Both Berant Zhu and Regina Lei, as Jim and Kat respectively, are an incredibly likable and believable couple. You care for them and want them to survive, even when it all feels nihilistic. As such, it really adds to the tension and fear that we feel watching them. It also helps that both give great performances. They come off as heroic, but still feel grounded, in a reality where no one suddenly becomes an unbelievable action hero. 

Writer/ director Ron Jabbaz makes his directorial debut with this movie and blows away some guys who have been behind the camera for fucking years. Right off the bat, this is one of the absolute finest and, certainly, most dangerous debuts in many moon. He gives us a very good looking movie, that is also savage in its intensity and extreme content. From the very first moment of violence committed onscreen, your jaw will drop to the floor.

In fact, if you leave with even one takeaway (even though I can't see this being only one), it will be that the ultra-gory, take no shit splatter movie is not dead! Unlike most recent gorefests, this one is dead serious. It isn't trying to be funny or hip. What humor is included is enough to break the intensity with some levity. Also, the flick doesn't bring its message through some pretentious "elevated" bullshit. What this flick is is a true balls to the walls, excellently made genre movie. The climax is powerful and harsh in both story and feel. We also get a totally kick ass death/ grind metal track named "Crying City" by Ashen, which serves as the icing on the bloody cake, ending everything perfectly.  

And, make no mistake, this motherfucker takes no prisoners. The infected in this movie don't simply run and kill. They can also talk, shoot weapons, and commit rape. As a matter of fact, there is a lot of rape, which may make this a disturbing viewing for some. The splatter FX are excellent, shocking, and realistic. They include arterial spraying, eye gougings, bodies hitting the pavement, finger chopping, fleshing munching, arm snapping, barb wire to the balls, stabbings, and more. A couple of set pieces really stand out among all the spattering blood and guts. One of them involving an infected neighbor and garden shears that made even this old gorehound wince! Another one has to be a stab to the aorta which leads to a geyser of blood hitting the train ceiling and passengers. This scene alone counts as the year's best and bloodiest kill. Scratch that. The whole goddamn train scene is easily the year's most horrific, bloody, and nightmarish moment! And, we get even more graphic shit happening after that! 

Look, I'm not gonna beat around the bush, The Sadness is the most uncompromising horror movie in a very, very long time. It's shocking, unmerciful, ultraviolent, and an easy 10 on the gore-meter. But, it isn't simply a mindless gorefest, as it also serves as a terrifying reflection of the post-COVID world in which we live in. The film is the definitive and final word on the infected zombie trope. It is also technically excellent. This is thanks to the strong directing, which gives it a great look, fast pacing, nail-biting tension, and a nihilistic feeling. On top of this, the acting is superb, especially from the two likable leads. That being said, it is most certainly not for the queasy or easily offended. Those with trigger warnings like rape and sexual harassment should definitely avoid as well. All other horror and splatter fans should take heed and jump right in, when the movie begins streaming exclusively on Shudder on May 12, 2022.

The Queen of Black Magic (2019) (Review)

Three young men bring their wives and children with them, as they visit the orphanage that they grew up at. Their purpose being to visit the old man, Mr. Bandi (Yayu A.W. Unru), that ran the orphanage, as he is sick and dying. While, there creepy and increasingly weird things begin to happen, as the place is haunted by the vengeful spirit of Ms. Mirah (Ruth Marini), who used to work there. The reasons for her vengeance are slowly revealed, as the horrible truths of what happened there begin to come to the surface.

The Queen of Black Magic is a very loose, Indonesian remake of the 1981 horror film of the same name and country of origin (stills of which appear during the end credits, if I am not mistaken). I have never seen that film, but have heard of it. That flick will be coming to Shudder next month, February 1, 2021, where we will all be able to see it. For now, this one will be coming to Shudder this Thursday, January 28th. 

Directed by Kimo Stamboel and written by the country's reigning master of horror, Joko (Impetigore, Satan's Slaves) Anwar, the film starts with a slam-bang of a beginning. As we see the first family we are introduced to hit what they think is the dead deer that they see on the road. But, we, and not the family, see a dead girl. It is a great what the fuck moment that sets the whole thing in motion. And, while it slows down considerably from there, once it gets going again, it doesn't let up.

The movie, at first, has a lot of generic and predictable moments, which might even lead you to believe that it is not much more than another clone of The Ring. But, even when it seems to be at its most predictable, it always remains an entertaining watch. And, once the movie gets further along, it has some nice shocking twists which I won't discuss here. All I'll say is that they make the flick get under your skin and makes you feel uncomfortable. 

And, trust me when I say that this one doesn't fuck around. As, there are some really gruesome gore moments dispersed throughout the movie. They include: self slicing, centipede barfing, literal head banging (as in the kind that doesn't involving listening to Slayer), a truly wince inducing staple to the mouth, hot water baths, a vicious decapitation that ranks as one of last year's best kills, and more! 

Most of the CGI is actually pretty good, including a great scene involving centipedes crawling out of someone's skin. But, even in parts with weaker CGI, the film is so well directed by Stamboel, that you'll be caught up in the moment and won't care much. Stamboel also really knows how to use jump scares to effective results. Thanks to his solid directing we get a great looking film, that is further helped along by the excellent acting by the cast.

The Queen of the Black Magic is a wonderfully entertaining, supernatural gorefest that is an absolute blast to watch! It is a bit slow after that roadkill beginning, but once it gets going again it moves at a faster and faster clip. By the end, it simply flies by! While at first, it looks like it is gonna be another generic female ghost flick, it has enough surprising twists to stand out amongst its competition. Plus, it's also good looking, has mostly solid FX, and is further strengthen by good acting. Pumped up with some truly stomach churning gross-out moments, fans of harder edge horror will be enjoying the hell out of it.

Impetigore (Review)

It is night time and Maya (Tara Basro) is working at a toll booth. She's on the phone telling her friend, Dini (Marissa Anita), who is working at another toll booth, about some stalker. Soon said stalker appears and tries to kill her. He is soon shot dead by the cops. Later on, thanks to a photo from her aunt and what the creeper told her, she finds out that she has inherited a large house in a small village. She and Dini go to said village to get the inheritance. Soon, they realize that something is very wrong there, and their lives are at risk in increasing danger.

That is about all I will tell you about the plot, since part Impetigore is the mystery of it. The flick is an Indonesian, supernatural horror film from the country's reigning master of the genre, Joko (Satan's Slave) Anwar. He serves as writer and director of this creepy and decidedly fresh take on ghosts and witchcraft. As much as I enjoyed his earlier movie Satan's Slaves, I think this one is even better.

Anwar's directing is top notch. The beginning of the film is creepy as fucking hell and builds tension really well. It is a legitimately scary scene that is exactly how you start off a horror movie! The flick actually has some genuinely spine-chilling moments throughout. Anwar really know how to build fear and suspense, especially in stalk and chase sequences. Even when the movie looks like it is headed into generic territory, it ends up being done in a good and gory way. For example what you will early on dismiss as typical creepy kid ghosts are done so well here, especially in terms of one bloody, good shock scene.

Speaking of gory, the movie has some real holy shit moments. For example, there is one featuring already flayed skin that is hung out to dry that made even this jaded old gorehound's eyes pop out! While, American horror is usually afraid to tackle the killing of children, this movie ain't. Yet, it doesn't feel exploitative or for pure shock value, as it is of utmost importance to the plot. Splatter wise, the film really loves throat slashings, flayings, and machete mayhem.

Credit must be also be given to Anwar's script. The mystery of what is going on is interestingly constructed and very well done. It may unravel slowly, but throughout the movie it keeps your attention glued to what is happening onscreen. There are some really good twists that propel the action and tale being told. The shock ending could've come out as silly, but it's actually decidedly unnerving.

The acting is excellent and the cast really bring their respective characters to life. Especially good are Tara Masro as Maya and Marissa Anita as Dini. Both are super likable and have great chemistry with each other. As such, their friendship is handled really well.

Impetigore is so fucking good! It is a solid shocker with a mysterious plot that really holds you in its tight, icy grip. This is achieved through Anwar's white knuckle directing and tight script. The flick is hair-raising, edge of your seat genre film-making. I especially love the way the storyline unfolds. Shocking bits of graphic violence further adds to the uneasiness. The excellent acting, especially from Basro and Anita, add more merits to the film. Anwar continues to show that he is a force to be reckoned with in Indonesian/ Asian horror. You should check this out for yourself when the movie begins streaming on Shudder this Thursday, July 23, 2020.

The Wrath (Review)

A household in ancient Korea is cursed by a demonic, female ghost, who haunts it and the family who inhabits it. Ok-Bun (Son Na-Eun) has married the third son in said family, who has returned home with a demon sword to destroy the ghost. That night, he beds his new wife. He fails at getting rid of the ghost, though, instead getting offed by her. The mother-in-law hates Ok-Bun, but soon has to put up with and make sure Ok-Bun is cared for, as she is the first of her three daughter-in-laws to get successfully knocked-up. But, the weird shit happening gets weirder and weirder, and eventually more deadly. A great exorcist is called to help get rid of the evil spirit and help protect the baby. But, can even he do anything?
The Wrath is a Korean remake of the 1986 Korean horror flick, Woman's Wail. Having never seen that movie, I will be judging this movie wholly on its own merits. It most definitely has its share of both merits and flaws. But, thankfully the good far out weighs the bad.

While there are scenes that will feel familiar to anyone who has watched enough Asian horror, director Yoo (The Wicked) Young-Sun manages to always keep the film interesting.  The movie looks beautiful, thanks to its gorgeous cinematography. The outside shots of the snowy woods early in the film, for example, are majestic and stunning. He is also quite good at giving us some really creepy moments.
The movie has a great beginning, which is foreboding and bloody. It sets up the tone for the rest of the film rather nicely. Another highlight of the movie is when we finally learn the ghost's full origin, which is violent and intense. That being said, it is a mostly slow moving film. But, thanks to some deft directing and storytelling, you remain interested throughout and want to know just what fuck is going on. It helps that the flick has some "oh shit!" moments that keep you further intrigued.

Among these are some bits of gore. The bloody mayhem includes stabbings, arterial sprays, face ripping, and the barfing up of blood! But, the grossest scene involves the eating of earthworms, thankfully CGI ones. The climax is great and really ups the action by tenfold. It is followed by a shock ending which actually works within the overall plot. Which is more than I can usually say for most endings of this sort.
The acting is excellent; it is one of the movie's strongest points. This is so central to a flick like this, as the relationships and interactions between the women is made that much more fascinating. I really like the way this film presents women of this era and the importance, for them, of being with child in this society. This shows the women's ambitions and desires and helps to keep the movie strong, solid, and fascinating.

The Wrath is a kind of slow but always entertaining and, at times, fascinating bit of K-horror. It has a few creepy moments, as well as some that are gory and gruesome and help to punch up the proceedings. The movie has a great beginning and an exciting climax that balances it all out rather nicely. Featuring beautiful cinematography and excellent acting, this remake is a good choice for fans of Asian and/ or supernatural/ ghost horror in general. It starts streaming this Thursday, September 5, 2019, on Shudder.

SADAKO Vs. KAYAKO (Review)

Two girls who are friends watch the cursed video tape from Ringu (AKA The Ring), first Natsumi (Aimi Satsukawa), then later, Yuri (Mizuki Yamamoto). They both have two days to live (cut down from the original film's seven days), as  Sadako (Elly Nanami) will come and kill them. After an awesomely funny and failed exorcism, they end up getting help from a man named Kyozo (Masanobu Ando) and Tamao (Maiko Kikuchi), the blind and psychic girl who assists him in his ghost hunting. The only way to save them he demises would be for Sadako to battle another vengeful spirit.
At the same time that this is going, Suzuka (Tina Tamashiro) has moved next door to the house from Ju-On (The Grudge). Haunted by nightmares, learning of the house's murder history, and hearing about some boys who disappeared, she pays it a visit. Of course, this means she is cursed by the ghost known as Kayako (Runa Endo). Ultimately, Kyozo and Tamao decide to help all these girls by getting them to cross curse each other, thus causing their evil ghost chicks to battle each other over them.
For much of Sadako Vs. Kayako, it feels like two movies spliced together. The Sadako stuff is wilder and more fun, while Kayako part is slightly weaker and little more predictable. This isn't to say that part is bad, it most certainly isn't. Whenever Kayako and her creepy-ass son are onscreen, it's still good fun. It's just the Sadako part with its more interesting female protagonists, crazy ghost hunters, and, most especially, the aforementioned exorcism really stands out. At the last third of the movie it finally does become the crossover it promises to be, and then things get really crazy! But, the ultimate truth is that this movie is more fun that it has any right to be.
The acting from the cast is good. Though Tina Tamashiro's Suzuka is slightly less interesting than the other heroes in the film, her performance is fine. But, honestly, it's Masanoby Ando as Kyozo who really steals the show. He is so much fun to watch and is really the character that you will enjoy watching the most.
The more terrifying nature of both of the movies that make up this crossover is largely left on the wayside. Though, there are a few creepy moments, here and there, most of the feeling of the movie is one of just being a good time. It is more interested in entertaining you than outright scaring the shit out of you. There is a little more blood than the US counterparts of these franchises but is hardly a gorefest. The FX contained in the film range from the pretty decent to very good.
Sadako Vs. Kayako feels like two partners that keep teasing each other a lot, only to finally get to the actually fucking. But, the fact is that movie is continuously entertaining and fun, even if the levels of the entertainment do change, at times. Yes, it is a little bit dumb and kind of silly, but come on, one of this movie's precedents is fucking King Kong Vs. Godzilla! And, this movie is, I think, better than that camp favorite. It is possible that you will be disappointed that the movie takes so long to actually crossover, but this didn't happen to me. I just enjoyed the hell out of a movie that really should be not as wonderfully entertaining as it is. Also, I can honestly say that it  is infinitely better than either the The Ring Two or any of the American The Grudge movies. Exclusively available to view on the new horror subscription channel Shudder, I say kick back, relax, and just enjoy the hell out of it!

The 10 Best Movies of 2009

Another great year for movie fans has passed. And, while there will always be shitty remakes and sequels and miserable films, in general, there were some real winners out there, in all genres. In fact, this was a real difficult list to make, there were many movies that just, barely did not make the cut. As always, the list is all encompassing and not the usual ass kissing that other sites and blogs may feel the need to do. So, if you are looking for boring, overrated shit, I suggest you look else where. All movies here are equal amounts of quality and entertainment.

10. Zombieland- - Many complain that the zombie sub-genre is getting over crowded, well maybe it is. But, as long as fun, cool movies like this are made, I won't fucking care. This is easily my fav role that Woody Harrelson (one of my favorite actors) has done in a long time. The humor is actually funny and the gore is kick ass. In other this is that hardest of things to do right: the horror comedy. The cameo is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the year's best, and funniest, cinematic moments.

9. Inglorious Basterds- - I have been a long time fan of Tarantino's work, but I will be the first to admit that Kill Bill Vol. 2 and, especially, Death Proof were crap, at least in my humble opinions, anyways. But, Tarantino has redeemed himself with this, his work in a long time. Sure it is kind of slow, at times, but the movie looks great. And, above that the acting is excellent, in particular that of Christopher Waltz as the evil lead Nazi, and the script is phenomenal. Those looking for carnage will love the graphic violence, particularly cheering for the bloody deaths of the piece of shit Nazi scum. The final twenty minutes or so had me on the edge of my seat and cheering. Fucking amazing.

8. Wonder Woman- - DC have doing an amazing job with their direct-to-DVD animated movies. But, even I did not think that they could pull off a movie this great, much less with a character that I was never a fan of. The animation is amazing and the voice acting great. The script is also fun, exciting, and mature. The fight scenes are totally kick ass and some of the violence is pretty shocking. If they ever make Wonder Woman into a live action movie, it will not be easy to top this one. In fact, this one is better than many a live action superhero movie.

7. Up- - For the second year in a row a pixar movie has made my list. Yeah, of course the animation is jaw dropping, but it is the heart here that really makes it shine. During the first fifteen minutes or so, there is little to no dialogue, and yet, I was crying. This movie touched my heart like few movies with a bunch of pointless melodrama could ever hope to achieve. But, it ain't all sad. It also happens to be funny, cute, and, in particular the climax, really exciting. Mark this one as another great hit for Pixar.

6. (500) Days of Summer- - Romantic movies usually suck. It's a fucking fact. And, I abhor chick flicks. But, this dear friends, is NOT a chick flick. In fact, written and directed by guys, the movie can be seen as a normal guy's take on romance. And, I think that is why it connects to guys, so well. What normal dude has not been where our lead is at in the film? But, upon further thought it does have a universal appeal that does pull in both sexes. In fact, few movies spoke to me on a more personal level than this one. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just great in the movie. Zooey Deschanel is so damn good, as well. She is a babe, one that you will both love her and hate as she plays the role of Summer. Quite simply THE best romantic movie, in my eyes, since Secretary (although that movie is completely different, but you get my point).

5. Drag to Me Hell- - I been a Sam Raimi fan since I was a kid. In fact, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn is one of the movies that influenced me to get into film. But, while I liked the first two Spider-Man movies (part three sucked Venom's dick); I always wanted him to go back to horror. I wondered, almost doubted he would. But, thank fucking God he did. And, in doing so he made his best film since Darkman. Having much of the same feel and style of Evil Dead 2, Drag Me to Hell is wild, fun, and highly entertaining. Even with the usually stifling PG-13 rating, this one delivers some pretty great gross out moments. Also, our lovely lead Alison Lohman is not only a babe, but she is a great actress. One really feels for her character cause she really doesn't deserve all the shit that happens to her, in this movie. While, Lorna Ravner is awesome as the villain. Their confrontation in the parking lot is one of most ass kicking and fun fights in a movie this year. It's a shame that this funny and suspenseful horror flick, did not become a big hit at the box office, while filth like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made a shit load of cash.

4. District 9- - While, I have no clue if Peter Jackson will ever go back to the splatter film, at least he produced Neill Blomkamp's kick ass sci-fi flick. A smart, deep, thought provoking, multi-layered story is combined with great acting and awesome FX. It also happens to have some of the most impressive gore to bleed forth on a sci-fi since the days of Paul Verhoeven. Combing elements of Robocop and Cronenberg's The Fly, Blomkamp has a made modern classic of the genre. The fact that this film, made in New Zealand and featuring an unknown cast, made money at the box office gives me at least some hope in the cinema going audience.

3. Watchmen- - While, mainstream audiences did not get this one (too slow, too violent, too much sex, whatever the fuck was their complaint), real fans knew that this was a faithful adaptation to one of the great comic book stories ever told. Dark, violent, mature, smart, enthralling, and eye popping this is one of the finest superhero films, ever made. Everyone is so good in their role, but it is Jackie Earl Haley that gives a breakthrough performance as unbalanced but heroic vigilante Rorschach. Not an easy book to adopt, the movie stays close to the source material making only changes that benefit it cinematically. The DVD release of the Ultimate Cut is THE definitive version of this movie, and THE finest DVD release of the year.

2. Martyrs- - Man, the French continue to make the type of horror films America just does not have the balls to fucking do. This movie is brutal, harrowing, and truly horrific. It's a film that makes you feel like the victims, as by the end of the movie I was left scarred, beaten, and brutalized. The movie is divided into three sections, and I realize some have complained about the third section. But, if you get it, it really does work. There is a richness and deepness here that goes well beyond the gore and shock (even if it does deliver some of the most outright nightmarish examples of that in 2009). Any film that manages to affect on level that is so deep as this one has to be admired.

1. Thirst- - Chan Wook Park is the man. There should be a fucking alter for this director, for fans to worship at. Perhaps, the single best director currently making movies; he hits gold again with this flawless and entertaining take on vampires. While, Hollywood has defanged vamps with the pussified Twilight series; Park takes the sub-genre into an exciting manner. Compiled with his artistic directing and the two excellent leads, Thirst is the finest bloodsucker movie since From Dusk Till Dawn. It is equally fun, funny, horrific, and smart. It also hits the mark as far as sex and gore goes, and Kim Ok-Bin is the single most beautiful and captivating woman to ever play a vampire. She also happens to be one of my picks for hottest babes of the year. The movie got a limited release, so you may not have seen, but I beg you to get your ass to seeing the newly released DVD. Though, I for one, will hold out for a DVD when one with more extras gets released, as this one is as bare bones as it fucking gets. Regardless, Park is an amazing director, and this movie serves to further cement him as one of the finest cinematic voices in the history of genre film making.

The 10 Best Movies of 2008

This has been an interesting year for movies. Some long awaited films delivered the goods (Rambo) others fucked up royally (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), meanwhile lots of great comic book movies came out (three of which made this list). This list is all comprehensive, so it just horror films, it's all genres. If you are interested in me talking about horror movies, stop by the Gorezone.net messageboards, where I post under Headbanger69. You can always read my reviews for the DVD Crypt, there, too, where I write under my real name: Giovanni Deldio. Anyways, enjoy the list and see any of the movies, you have not yet, seen. By the way, if you are expecting a bunch of boring, whimpy, pussy whipped, pretentious claptrap on this list go read some other lame website or movie rag.

10. - This direct sequel to the amazing Casino Royale is not as good as that film, but is still exciting enough to rank among the best of the Bond film series. While, some of the editing is annoying and intrusive, the climax is really exciting and rousing and Craig is, hands down, one of the best Bonds ever. Olga Kurylenko smokes the screen with her presence, and she is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most beautiful Bond girls, ever.

9. - Neil Marshall is THE future of the genre. This movie is an awesome, fast paced, fun, ass kicking, ultra-violent love letter to movies like The Road Warrior, Mad Max, and Escape from New York, with doses of Excalibur and 28 Days Later thrown in for good measure. I would say that it is the greatest post-apocalyptic film that does not have Mel Gibson in it (yes, I like it more than the Italian movies form the sub-genre, that I have seen). Plus, lead actress Rhona Mitra is one of the sexiest heroines the screen has ever seen. Rip-roaring fun from start to finish.

8. - Lighter in tone than the original, Guillermo Del Toro manages to make an even better movie, this time around, with this fun, funny, and fast paced fantasy/ monster flick. Ron Pearlman is good as the horror comic hero and the creatures are just so cool in this one. The FX are excellent, but this movie also has a heart, something many a blockbuster forgets. Del Toro continually proves to be one of the best directors in the horror/ dark fantasy world.

7. - This is the crowning achievement of Pixar, their best film, yet, even better than the wonderful Finding Nemo. The fact that this stunning movie is so great, with such little dialogue is a testament to the creative team behind it. It is funny, sweet, touching, cute, and always breathtaking to look at. I actually cried at parts and laughed at others. Wall-E is one of the most endearing characters in the history of cinema.

6. - With the death of lead star Heath Ledger and all the praise his role as the Joker was getting and the hype revolving around this film, it had a lot to live up. And, boy did it deliver and in spades! Director/ co-writer Christopher Nolan gave us one of the greatest superhero films, ever, a dark, mature, powerful, deep, and realistic take on being a superhero. By not playing it safe or for the kiddies, this movie succeeds where so many have failed. The action set pieces are impressive, the sets breathtaking, and the acting excellent. Leger gives us a terrifying, sick, and evil Joker, one of the best villains the screen has seen in quite some time. That is not to said the rest of cast did not deliver, as they pulled in great work as well. This movie has greatly raised the banner for this franchise, can another film really deliver the goods?

5. - The best trailer of 2008 came form this super gory and fun mix of action, splatter, horror, and humor from Japan. It is the goriest movie to hit the screens since Germany's Permutos: Lord of the Living Dead (and while that film was fun, this is light years better). The movie is always light despite some fairly fucked up moments, including off-screen necrophilia! A must for gorehounds, it also has some of the hottest babes to be featured in one film this year. The hottest to me has to be the Japanese beauty who plays the yakuza wife, who wears a fucking drill bra! Amazing and my fav film from the far-East that I saw last year.

4. - As a life long wrestling fan, I was greatly looking forward to this movie. It definitely lived up to my expectations. Rourke gives the performance of a lifetime in a movie that is touching and humorous, at differnt times. It is also, as anyone with knowledge of the wrestling biz can testify, very realistic. I hope this film gives viewers new found respect for wrestlers, as well as see how hard the fall from fame can be. Lovely Evan Rachel Wood has a small role as the daughter and from here we can see a connection to the life of Jake "The Snake" Roberts (in fact while this film is not based on any single wrestler, it is clearly drawn from many real life experiences they have had). Marisa Tomei is great in her role as the beautiful, MILF stripper with a good heart. I have long been a fan of the lovely Ms. Tomei, but she looks drop-dead beautiful in this one, and at 44 looks better than ever! Plus, she gets topless and wears a g-string! Not only that but with music by Accept, Scorpions, Cinderella, and Guns N' Roses, this is THE soundtrack of the year, perhaps, ever! The scene where Tomei and Rourke sign Ratt's classic "Round and Round" is one of the year's coolest moments.

3. - Though, I been a life long fan of comics, I was never a fan of Iron Man, but this movie changed all of that. Today, he joins, Punisher, Spider-Man, and Batman as my absolute fav heroes. Mature, fun, smart, fast paced, exciting, and ass kicking are all words that can be used to describe this modern masterpiece. The FX are flawless and Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man, and while playing a rich, womanizing, alcoholic is not a stretch for the man, he more gives Tony Stark his due. Director and fanboy John Favreau has given the single greatest superhero film, ever. A perfect movie and I don't say that very often. The ending is fucking classic.

2. - Who would ever have thought that the return of John Rambo would turn out to be not only the best one in the series, but one of the best action films ever made? I have discussed this film before, here, so I will just gone to say that this movie, the bloodiest American action film ever, holds on really well on repeated viewings. It also has a great message to it, and how many shoot 'em ups can say that they have that and are still savagely entertaining?

1. - Inside is, along with The Descent, the best horror film to come out of Europe in years. Brutal, vicious, intense, bloody, I could go on and on with my praising of this film, but since I wrote about it here already, I will avoid repeating myself. But, here is my question, if you ain't seen last years best movie, in any genre, what the hell are you waiting for? Seriously, this movie is a future horror classic and needs to be seen by everyone who is tired of the same boring, predicable tripe that the studios dump on us each and every year and try to pass it on as a horror film.
